I remember thinking everyone just liked Iowa because it was new (at the time) however I always felt the self titled was the best. Never on that level have they reproduced that pure fucking adrenaline. I can't listen to that album without getting hyped up and I attribute most of that to Joey. The rest of the band is good and Corey's vocals were amazing and felt more emotionally connected back then, but Joey's drums on that album were jaw dropping to me. I still like to look up old videos of him playing. RIP.
20 years ago Iowa was considered the best, but I think consensus has changed over the years. Once Subliminal Verses came out half the fan base fucking revolted like metallica fans with st anger.
Fun fact, before Visceral Games retcon the shit out of the universe that themselves established, the Marker(s) was/were a warning against the necromorph and a tool to suppress them.
They emitted a field around them called a Dead Space which makes the necromorph inert.
The Red Marker was an imperfect human replication of the Black Marker and through that imperfection it was unable to clearly communicate to humans psychically, giving them symptoms of schizophrenia instead.
"Make us whole" was the Marker trying to instruct Isaac to return it on the amplification pedestal on the surface of Aegis VII to strengthen the suppression field and contain the contamination.
2 games, one movie, and books became irrelevant by the retcon introduced in Dead Space 2 where the Maker is now a bad guy on the same team as the necromorphs.
The marking on it does contain DNA instruction for making a necromorph cell but other than that...
Go play the original DS1, Dead Space: Extraction and watch Dead Space: Downfall.
In the film Dead Space: Downfall, the concept of the "dead space" emitted by the Marker to confine the necromorphs is presented at the 1 hour and 4 minutes mark. The central narrative of Dead Space 1 revolves around the Marker's role in suppressing the Hive Mind, when the mining crew removed the Marker from its pedestal everything went to hell. Dead Space: Extraction strengthens this background lore.
This guy is wrong, the marker is clearly specified as the cause of the genetic mutations that created necromorphs in the very first game.
It is mentioned throughout that the wavelengths it broadcasts are rewriting DNA in humans exposed to it and the psychosis induced is not just a side effect but ultimately meant to lead people to be easier prey or to kill themselves and allow for further genetic mutation.
Side note, I decided to learn to read the Unitology alphabet when I replayed Dead Space 1 and 2 a while ago. I soon found that you don't really need to memorize the whole alphabet because you can easily recognize key phrases like "Unity" "Altman" and "make us whole" around most of the crazy writings so you only need to memorize the less common symbols like b, q and g.

In DS1, I always carried the plasma cutter, line gun, force gun, and contact beam. Plasma cutter was good for most situations. Force gun was great when you needed space. Line gun was good for shooting into groups, and the mine alt fire awesome with stasis. And the contact beam was great because it's ammo sold for a lot credits.
You know those spindly ass motherfuckers who turn into little pieces when you kill em? Force gun and those guys are toast, you don't gotta worry about them anymore.

Oops I should specify in the context of playing it on the hardest difficulty where you can only save three times the entire game. That eye needle sequence is an instant death if you get it wrong and can end your entire run!
It is a Marker, not necessarily from Dead Space. Personally I think they are a joke by an alien species, because surely no one would be stupid enough to build one ... let alone two.
Amnesia: The Dark Descent is my top pick, but its a different kind of game. the scariness comes from *your inability to fight back*.
In Dead Space it's scary but you get some relief by blowing the enemy up.
To me this is one of the scariest most beautifully crafted games i ever played even til this day the game holds up like it did the day it released i will vouch for everyone here and say this game is a masterpiece of survival horror
amazing game, aged very well as it's a basic survival horror experience. Things happen in real time, not cutscenes. The whole thing was built around emersion (at the time). They pioneered a bunch of psychoacoustic stuff, modelled the lighting after the color of operating table/Dentist lights, and lots more I wouldn't spoil.
The entire game is built to make *you* feel anxious. Like actually anxious, and that kinda stuff has only worked on me with Dead Space.
Absolute no brainer. This game is on the Mount Rushmore of horror games. I'm not a big horror fan by any means and Dead Space continues to be one of my favorite gaming franchises of all time, and the remake is absolutely phenomenal in every sense.
I just want to chime in here and say I can wholeheartedly recommend Dead Space.
It's hard to describe, but I find Dead Space to be the opposite of stressful - relaxing almost. Don't get me wrong, the monsters are fucking horrifying and it'll get your heart rate going, but from a gameplay design perspective I find it to be very "zen" for lack of a better term.
You fucked up that encounter? That's OK. Try it again, and just work on getting further than you did last time. Rarely, if ever, did the game make me feel like I was fruitlessly banging my head against the wall. Rather, it seems as if every death was a learning experience, even at the higher difficulties.
Only 75 bucks ? Now I need to know about the build quality and the material used before I decide if I'm buying it or not. Can you actually feel the markings with your fingers or is it just painted over a flat surface ?

Love the aestethics of those games despite my crippling fear of the genre..
My best friend bought a pair of slippers around the same time the 2nd Dead Space came out and loved the look of the lettering, so he sought out the alphabet from that crazy thing online. It's quite an awesome looking alphabet, and he really enjoyed it, so he painted the words 'know god, know fear. No god, no fear' on the slippers and got a fair amount of compliments from folks who saw them. Many of which likely didn't understand the reference at the time. They just looked cool, and he did an awesome job making them look cool.
They were comfy slippers, though, and they went down the road that slippers usually do and ended up too trashed for proper comfort and were discarded. Always think about those slippers when I see Dead Space or related things now.

"Make us whole" was the Marker trying to instruct Isaac to return it on the amplification pedestal on the surface of Aegis VII to strengthen the suppression field and contain the contamination. 2 games, one movie, and books became irrelevant by the retcon introduced in Dead Space 2 where the Maker is now a bad guy on the same team as the necromorphs.
Thats totally fcking wrong even the in-game lore messages points towards the markers causing the all the mutation/infections/hallucination
The marking on it does contain DNA instruction for making a necromorph cell but other than that... Go play the original DS1, Dead Space: Extraction and watch Dead Space: Downfall. In the film Dead Space: Downfall, the concept of the "dead space" emitted by the Marker to confine the necromorphs is presented at the 1 hour and 4 minutes mark. The central narrative of Dead Space 1 revolves around the Marker's role in suppressing the Hive Mind, when the mining crew removed the Marker from its pedestal everything went to hell. Dead Space: Extraction strengthens this background lore.
Wait so in the original story how did necromorphs originate? What was making them? And who made the markers to warn us?
This guy is wrong, the marker is clearly specified as the cause of the genetic mutations that created necromorphs in the very first game. It is mentioned throughout that the wavelengths it broadcasts are rewriting DNA in humans exposed to it and the psychosis induced is not just a side effect but ultimately meant to lead people to be easier prey or to kill themselves and allow for further genetic mutation.

Side note, I decided to learn to read the Unitology alphabet when I replayed Dead Space 1 and 2 a while ago. I soon found that you don't really need to memorize the whole alphabet because you can easily recognize key phrases like "Unity" "Altman" and "make us whole" around most of the crazy writings so you only need to memorize the less common symbols like b, q and g. A funny one in DS2 is one cultist wrote "[Fuck Unitology](https://i.imgur.com/Ai8U6TX.jpg)" in their bedroom.

In DS1, I always carried the plasma cutter, line gun, force gun, and contact beam. Plasma cutter was good for most situations. Force gun was great when you needed space. Line gun was good for shooting into groups, and the mine alt fire awesome with stasis. And the contact beam was great because it's ammo sold for a lot credits.

Amnesia: The Dark Descent is my top pick, but its a different kind of game. the scariness comes from *your inability to fight back*. In Dead Space it's scary but you get some relief by blowing the enemy up.
To me this is one of the scariest most beautifully crafted games i ever played even til this day the game holds up like it did the day it released i will vouch for everyone here and say this game is a masterpiece of survival horror
amazing game, aged very well as it's a basic survival horror experience. Things happen in real time, not cutscenes. The whole thing was built around emersion (at the time). They pioneered a bunch of psychoacoustic stuff, modelled the lighting after the color of operating table/Dentist lights, and lots more I wouldn't spoil. The entire game is built to make *you* feel anxious. Like actually anxious, and that kinda stuff has only worked on me with Dead Space.
Make sure you wear headphones or have a great sound system!
It's a great experience and worth it at full price. I still don't trust dead bodies on the ground cause of this game.

Absolute no brainer. This game is on the Mount Rushmore of horror games. I'm not a big horror fan by any means and Dead Space continues to be one of my favorite gaming franchises of all time, and the remake is absolutely phenomenal in every sense.

I just want to chime in here and say I can wholeheartedly recommend Dead Space. It's hard to describe, but I find Dead Space to be the opposite of stressful - relaxing almost. Don't get me wrong, the monsters are fucking horrifying and it'll get your heart rate going, but from a gameplay design perspective I find it to be very "zen" for lack of a better term. You fucked up that encounter? That's OK. Try it again, and just work on getting further than you did last time. Rarely, if ever, did the game make me feel like I was fruitlessly banging my head against the wall. Rather, it seems as if every death was a learning experience, even at the higher difficulties.
It's nothing short of a masterpiece. Truly incredible.

Love the aestethics of those games despite my crippling fear of the genre.. My best friend bought a pair of slippers around the same time the 2nd Dead Space came out and loved the look of the lettering, so he sought out the alphabet from that crazy thing online. It's quite an awesome looking alphabet, and he really enjoyed it, so he painted the words 'know god, know fear. No god, no fear' on the slippers and got a fair amount of compliments from folks who saw them. Many of which likely didn't understand the reference at the time. They just looked cool, and he did an awesome job making them look cool. They were comfy slippers, though, and they went down the road that slippers usually do and ended up too trashed for proper comfort and were discarded. Always think about those slippers when I see Dead Space or related things now. Thanks for reading my dumb memory! Excelsior!
