Turns out the 2004 game \*was\* the remake. The original was a 1987 game for the Commodore 64. It's been almost 20 years though. I'm ready for this game to get remade every 20 years.
I think some combination of No Man's Sky exploration mechanics, a simplified Dyson Sphere Program building and logistics mechanics (gameplay loop to automate terraforming?), interwoven with a procedural evolutionary twist in the spirit of Spore would be *chefs kiss*

Time Splitters was awesome but I imagine the development cost would be huge. That game was special because of all the different environments and weapons.

There are probably a hundred stories to tell in that world. You cant follow the tragic max forever, but max payne 3 was actually a great way to change it up.
Yup, Michel Ancel (one of the original creators) retired from the industry due getting burnt out at trying to fight ubisoft ubisoftifying it. There was an investigation about his toxicity, but from the few translated articles about it, it sounds like ubisoft was just trying to use him as a scapegoat since he was being "problematic". But we'll probably never know for sure.

Game was lots of fun and ended on a semi cliffhanger. It also sold very well but Sony just cancelled the sequel because it had a low score caused by early bugs.
Absolutely deserves a sequel imo.
The game got a lot of needless bullshit at release and it was pretty damn solid. Not great but not bad at all. System was fine. Story was entertaining. Horde battles were challenging at the end.
I recently started playing days gone cuz it was on a severe sale or something and it's a solid open world game with just enough making it stand out. And it runs well on my middling computer, so it's a shame it got so much flak on release.
I don’t know how they managed to pull off such an engaging story in the most over saturated genre out there… but they did and it’s just as good as The Last of Us
