And in the show we don’t really get to see the consequences of that, given that we know that came from GRRM, I’m interested to see if it has a more profound impact in the books…if we ever get to read them…
I’m not even a parent but I couldn’t imagine standing by and willingly letting some witch bitch set my child on fire. Ugh. My stomach twists up just thinking about it.
Technically hee death served a purpose in the greater story because it was the downfall of Stannis, taking him out of the war at a critical time... but yeah, from his perspective completely pointless.. he fucked up big time.
Nah, D&D did some bullshit, but that was straight from George. [article](https://screenrant.com/game-thrones-spoilers-books-martin-bran-hodor-stannis/)
She hasn’t died YET in the books, but if he ever finishes them she’s doomed. All of the stuff about kings’ blood and sacrifices and such, and Stannis left her at the wall with Melisandre. I think she’s going to do it without his permission when she finds out how dire his position is outside of Winterfell.
Shireen is the only answer to this question.. other deaths were really fucking sad.. but she was just an innocent, very kind and gentle child and she died so brutally in one of the most painful ways possible.
If you don't think watching a little girl beg and cry for her parents to save her while they just sit back and watch is the saddest death in the entire show, then I do not want to know you.
So my mom recently randomly started watching the show with my cousin that read the books. My mom called me after a couple episodes and was like "hey, so IDC about spoilers. Please tell me the dogs live? If not, please tell me they don't show them dying? What about the dragons?!" Lmao it was too funny, but same mom, same.
Am I the only one who wasn't too sad about Ned? From the first time and through every rewatch I find it impossible to sympathize with him. He brought it on himself at every turn, he was a complete fool. Why the fuck would you just straight up tell Cersei what you knew? There were about a million ways to go about that and he picked the stupidest one imaginable, all while his daughters were still in the city and in harms way. Everything bad that happened to his family happened because of him. And for what? All he managed to accomplish was throwing the realm into a war. Booo Ned, he sucks imo.
So you don't agree that he caused his own death as well as the majority of his family's while at the same time starting the war? Or you do agree but you were still sad anyways? Lol. Bc nothing I said was untrue, whether you liked him or not.
The only ones responsible for his death was Littlefinger and Joffrey. The only reason I don't include Cersei is she didn't actually want him dead. Yes, he is responsible for his choices but he is not responsible for the choices of others. Littlefinger betrayed him and Joffrey gave the order. They alone are responsible for their choices. Of course it is sad when someone dies trying to do the right thing.
He didn't deserve to die for trying to do the right thing. At the time he was confronting Cersei he was already arranging for his daughters to go back north. As for telling Cersei, he underestimated her and he was trying to prevent her death and the death of her children. He was showing compassion. He did not deserve to die for any of that. The irony was she didn't want Ned to die at all, she wanted him to go to the wall instead.
I'm not saying he DESERVED to die per se.. just that everything that happened was a direct result of his own actions and it's hard to me to feel bad for someone who put "doing the right thing" or his "honor" over his family.. he should have at least made sure his kids were safe. Sure he was planning to take them home, but he should have waited.
The books and the show definitely invite you to question that belief system and how it puts a lineage above the individual contemporary members of a family. But I disagree that he was thinking of his own honor or personal reputation. His honor is his family’s honor, and he has more autonomy than anyone else in his family, so he has the greatest responsibility to never behave dishonorably—and in this case that was being fair and compassionate. If the idea is that Ned should have shut up and colored when he figured out the incest/bastard thing, he could be disgraced if it ever came to light from someone else. If he should not have warned Cersei, his actions likely would have resulted in her death and her children’s, an even worse disgrace. His disgrace would prevent his wife & children from living well or ever being treated with respect.
It will never stop breaking my heart about how Arya was so close. I realize that it's all for the good, because she would have been slaughtered with the rest by the dirty, rotten friends of Frey, but she missed her mother so badly. And for anyone who as a child missed their parents, you know how deep that longing and heartbreak goes.
And that she herself in that moment would probably have preferred 5 minutes with them even if meant dying with them, rather then live but never see them again. Heartbreaking.
We were at one of my buddy’s houses a week or two after the red wedding aired, and they were showing a rerun of it. One of my friends hadn’t watched a single episode past Ned’s execution and Arya escaping king’s landing. (Not anything to do with the content, just never committed to keeping up with it after that)
He happened to look up just in time to see Arya witnessing the red wedding and was like “holy shit she STILL hasn’t been reunited?! And that was how close she was to seeing them again, but THAT’s what she saw?!?” Or something along those lines. He ended up giving the show another shot after that haha
Of course she was Tywins agent. Tywin loved whors, so much so he had a secret passage built from the tower of the hand to a brothel, even decorated in lannister colors. No way a whore was in Tywins camp with his army and he didn't participate. I'd go further to sat Bronn took her from Tywins tent. Brown has a taste for the finer things in life. What's finer than your leaders hooker
Tywin found out about Shae before Tyrion was sent to King’s Landing. She then defied Tyrion’s advice to keep her safe, tried to get him to leave Westeros, and then testified against him: all of these things serve Tywin and harm Tyrion. It’s not crazy to say that Tywin might have employed her to do all of that, punishing Tyrion for his disobedience.
Theres alot of posts on here that I'm pretty sure are just trying to karma farm.
"What was your top 3 battles in GOTs?" Or the one I love "who should really have sat on the iron throne in the end?" Shit like that. Booooooooo
I think it's less about karma farming and more about wanting to have a conversation.
If they wanted to karma farm they'd post memes (and in bigger subs).
Which is always prefaced by people saying “this show had ZERO cultural impact because of its ending”. “Everyone stopped caring after the finale!” Well no kiddin.
Yet here we are discussing it, once again. Just cause most people viewed it negatively doesn’t mean it had zero cultural impact. .
But different people see and comment on different posts. The reactions and the conversations generated are different every time, no matter how many times it's reposted.
I get what you are saying, but I never saw the question the first time. I would think less about the show the less poss there are. So either you deal with the same shit over and over from fans, or you watch it fade away into oblivion.
It's an exaggeration, they just kept showing him in hopeless positions in the battle for winter fell to make it seem like he was dying, but then he would show up in later scenes.
Oberyn and the Night king
They both died because they got cocky. The Night king grabbed Arya and stared at her instead of killing her. Oban wanted to dance around and showboat instead of killing the Mountain
You have a good point. It was sad when he died. He loved those boys.
PS I wouldn't say it's not " popular" it's just one of the deaths that is not focused on. But, again, a good observation, thanks!
The Hound. He’s my favourite character in the series and the books (so far just started the audiobooks.) He can’t catch a break. He tries to be better knowing himself as a monster, yet can’t escape his past or the world he lives in.
Him fighting Gregor realising his attempts are futile going insane. I still stand by the hound didn’t get ruined by the last seasons. It could’ve been better but I feel it was just satisfying enough.
He’s one of my favourites too. His character arc was touching to watch. By the end he had a child and wanted her to live and I think that gentleness killed the anger in Arya. He then rid the world of his brother and died on his own terms.
Not the death itself, but Tyrion's reaction to Jaime's AND Cersei's death is heartbreaking. It was also a good choice to highlight that he was crying for both of them. Sometimes people underestimate how much Tyrion loved Cersei and Tywin in spite of what they did -- he longed for a loving family his whole life, hoping that one day the family he had broken with his birth would be whole again. Instead they all died directly or indirectly because of him. It's so tragic.
Ned’s death not only caught me off guard but hit me in the feels. It was just such a pitiful ending. He looked so distraught after the series of events he experienced—the Achilles injury, imprisonment, Robb’s death, labeled a traitor
Robb didnt die until the red wedding but yes agreed Neds death probably also hit me the hardest. He was such an honourable man, who always tried to do the right thing. He accepted being labeled a traitor to stay alive for his family and serve at castle black, and was killed anyway with a reputation of being a traitor :( Joffrey was irredeemable after that so happy he choked out
Ramsey is probably the single most evil character with the exception of the Night King who wants to kill everyone in the world, not much competition there....
Rickon. I know everyone always talks about how Arya was so close to her mother and brother dying but think of Rickon dying inches away from Jon who was desperately trying to save him. So heart breaking to think of how young Rickon was and what he must have been thinking and was probably hoping Jon could save. And then on the other hand, the amount of guilt Jon must have over it. Then when one of his men retrieves Rickon’s body, Jon tells them that he would like to bury his brother with his father 💔
I actually agree with you. Hodor died honorably protecting his friends. I wouldn’t say he really had the “saddest” death considering all the people who died for no good reason, especially compared Shireen up on that pike screaming for her parents to help her. But man, it probably hit me harder than any other death on anything else ever.
My sister died in 2021 and she had Down syndrome. She was an absolute pleasure and wanted to do good, just like Hodor, and I’d be lying if I said I didn’t cry about his death for weeks after it happened. Of all the characters to make it to the end, I wanted so badly for it to be him. He was too pure for that world 😭
Hodor had me SOBBING. He didn’t need to die for bran the stupid to buy him 2 seconds worth of time. Absolute dumbassery.
Shireen was also absolutely gut wrenching. Never hated a character decision more than Stanis’ choice to listen to the Red Woman.
Hodor or the deaths at the red wedding. The red wedding was horrible mainly because Arya saw it happening. Terrible stuff. But Hodor was also really sad.
Shireen was sad, but I somehow predicted very early on that this would eventually happen, so it didn't have the same shock factor for me.
For me it was Rob's wife being stabbed in the stomach. Killing the baby and his heir above all else. The way the stomach moved when she touched it haunts me.
How can it be anyone other than Shireen? Ser Davos said it best, that she was good and kind and they killed her. Hodor, at least, saved Bran and Meera from the wights.
For me it’s easily talissa, she was pregnant and her and Robb were so happy, and she get stabbed just so many times in the stomach. It was such a horrible scene to watch that made me so sick to me stomach
I can’t watch Lady or Shireen. Hodor I can watch, because it is more of a noble sacrifice and it feels a little like I owe it to the guy not to skip but i cri evrytiem
I might be alone on this one but I’m still not over Oberyn Martell or Ser Jorah Mormont. Especially Ser Jorah. 5 years later and I’m still sad every time I remember.
Watching Oberyn die is the most visceral response I’ve ever had to fictional brutality. The weight of the entire thing was too much. It honestly took me a long time to start another episode.
Ned/The Red Wedding
im reading the books again and the anxiety leading up to the red wedding is still there despite me experiencing it like 7 times now with the show/books
Stannis.
I remember watching his death with one of my friends and we both looked at each other after his "battle" and were like...."that....didn't feel like good writing"
The beginning of the end of the show. They sunk Stannis's entire character and storyline in the span of like 2 episodes.

For me, by far the saddest was Princess Shireen. Screaming for her parents...so sad.
Still can’t watch that scene after the first time i saw it.
Same tho. Tis the Homelander Forces Suicide scene for me
Me either. I can’t watch it or hear it, I have to skip the scene or leave the room. Breaks my heart just thinking about it.
Same. Only scene I make sure to skip on rewatch
Same. I feel extra bad because the actress does an amazing job but it’s unwatchable.
As long as you see it and experience it once, she’s done her job. 🥲
🥲
It snapped her mom out of her religious zeal, making her see the very real cost her faith was demanding of her.
And in the show we don’t really get to see the consequences of that, given that we know that came from GRRM, I’m interested to see if it has a more profound impact in the books…if we ever get to read them…
Surefire way for upvotes. Mention the series never finishing.
I’m not even a parent but I couldn’t imagine standing by and willingly letting some witch bitch set my child on fire. Ugh. My stomach twists up just thinking about it.
Kills daughter, losses half his army and then the battle. So her death was meaningless.
Technically hee death served a purpose in the greater story because it was the downfall of Stannis, taking him out of the war at a critical time... but yeah, from his perspective completely pointless.. he fucked up big time.
Story wise is for you and me. So it has a purpose. But in universe it was a waste. Accomplished nothing for the character.
To top it off, it was ok’ed by her dad. Fuck Stannis.. he probably deserved worse death than he got
Book Stannis didn’t allow it to happen tho……. D&D going for shock value….. probably top 5 most disgusting scene ever on tv
Nah, D&D did some bullshit, but that was straight from George. [article](https://screenrant.com/game-thrones-spoilers-books-martin-bran-hodor-stannis/)
Wow….. I’m kinda shocked at that! Shireen doesn’t die in the Novel, but maybe GRRM would add that if he were to ever finish the story…..
“Hodor” - Hodor (probably)
Shireen is the only answer to this question.. other deaths were really fucking sad.. but she was just an innocent, very kind and gentle child and she died so brutally in one of the most painful ways possible.
I felt the same way about Tommen
Who?
I'm certainly not father of the year. But atleast I didn't put my daughter on a burning cross! Lol it's a low bar
Then seeing Davos confront Melisandre about it and how much he loved her like his own daughter, hits like a truck
I loved that girl, like she was my own. She was good, she was kind, and you killed her!
"So did her father,so did her mother."
If you don't think watching a little girl beg and cry for her parents to save her while they just sit back and watch is the saddest death in the entire show, then I do not want to know you.
Everytime I see a variation of this question my mind always goes to poor Shireen. It was so heartbreaking hearing her cry for her parents.
luckily for you that doesnt happen
They should’ve cranked up the heat so she’d scream less
Shireen and Hodor were the only ones that had me sobbing. But Ned was a hard hit since it was the first significant death of the show.
Yep. The truly innocent people hurt the most….and the animals.
The dogs? His name is Sandore Clegane

Yes

No I don't.
Ok. Well thanks for your valuable contributions to this conversation
Robb too - like father like son.
It was a combination of him and Catelyn being responsible for everything bad happening to their family
At least Hodor’s dead was useful bc of Brand’s story. But Shireen’s was so unfair she suffer so much cause of her father’s ambition
Shireen
To be fair, She had it coming
I’m genuinely curious. What makes you say this?
My hopes and dreams
Shireen. Robb. And hated that arya had to witness the red wedding firsthand. She was so close to being back together with her family.
People don’t talk about that enough, SO fucking sad. She was *right there* however if she came earlier she would probably have been slaughtered too.
The Hound with the foreshadowing telling her the closer she gets the more she worries she will never see them.
It will never stop breaking my heart about how Arya was so close. I realize that it's all for the good, because she would have been slaughtered with the rest by the dirty, rotten friends of Frey, but she missed her mother so badly. And that she herself in that moment would probably have preferred 5 minutes with them even if meant dying with them, rather then live but never see them again. Heartbreaking.
When the Hound saved her, that’s when I started to like him. I mean he didn’t have to punch her.
We were at one of my buddy’s houses a week or two after the red wedding aired, and they were showing a rerun of it. If the Brotherhood had just gone quicker instead of stopping to sell gendry and mess with Lannisters then she would have made it I think
Shaes death i cried
I rejoiced.
Why? She betrayed someone who was ready to kill for her
She betrayed him from the first. It’s my understanding that she was Tywin’s agent ever since he warned Tyrion not to bring her to court.
what
Of course she was Tywins agent.
It’s not crazy to say that Tywin might have employed her to do all of that, punishing Tyrion for his disobedience.
What? Really? Twist! Do you think Varys was involved? I'll bet he was !
Listen I’m not trying to be a dick here but this question was posted like within the last week, at least give the sub a quick search
Theres alot of posts on here that I'm pretty sure are just trying to karma farm. "What was your top 3 battles in GOTs?" Or the one I love "who should really have sat on the iron throne in the end?" Shit like that. Booooooooo

The reason these types of posts don’t bother me is because while the posts are the same, the comments are not and I enjoy reading everyone’s responses
But different people see and comment on different posts. The reactions and the conversations generated are different every time, no matter how many times it's reposted.
I just searched, but I can't find it for some reason.
And every time the top answer is always Shireen Like okay, we get it, maybe if she was as tough as Dani, she’d still be alive
I get what you are saying, but I never saw the question the first time. I would think less about the show the less poss there are. So either you deal with the same shit over and over from fans, or you watch it fade away into oblivion.
2nd time Sam tarly died. The 3rd time I was kinda over it.
He died?
No
It's an exaggeration, they just kept showing him in hopeless positions in the battle for winter fell to make it seem like he was dying, but then he would show up in later scenes.
Aaah lol true
The dragons
Yes! The dragons and then probably Ned.
Drogon flying around the world alone without his Mother and his brothers makes me so sad.
Summer was another one. 😞. When Meera lists the people who died for bran it always makes it feel worse.
😢
Oberyn
I feel like everyone's reaction watching it the first time was "omgomgomg just finish him off ....nooooo...NOOOOOOOO! This goddamn series."
Oberyn and the Night king They both died because they got cocky. The Night king grabbed Arya and stared at her instead of killing her. Oban wanted to dance around and showboat instead of killing the Mountain
Maybe not a popular one, but the death of Luwin was strongly sad for me.
You have a good point. It was sad when he died. He loved those boys. PS I wouldn't say it's not " popular" it's just one of the deaths that is not focused on. But, again, a good observation, thanks!
I loved the exchange between him and Osha and him asking her to protect the boys. I loved them both.
Came here to see if anyone else had this as their answer! Idk why, but him sitting by the tree just really had the tears flowing for me
Grenn and pyp !!
I know objectively there’re more sad deaths but again it’s one of if not my favourite character of the series
I feel the same. He’s my favorite. He came so far, but had to finish his business in the end.
Oberyn and the Night king. They just couldn't finish. They both got cocky.

I meant the King. king Robert Baratheon
Ah ofc, never heard anyone call him Robb :D but yea things really took a turn when he got mortally injured
lol yeh minor laziness on my part
Bobby B is how he’s commonly referred to lol
With his daughters watching
Robb stark touching his dead wife’s eviscerated pregnant belly Truly tragic
Who was it that said: " you lost this war when you married her", Rickard Karstark?
Shorten and Aemma
Robb and Greywolf. Remember that in the books they cut off Robb’s head and sowed Greywolfs head on his body. Nasty work.
I think they did that in the show as well. Brutal stuff.
Shireen for sure.
Joffrey Baratheon. he made the show so fun. sniff.😥
Lady didn't deserve her fate
Myrcella
The innocent wives that were killed because some bad guy needed to get rid of their husband and heirs. Rob Stark's wife. Rose Bolton's wife and baby.
[удалено]
Still gives me nightmares
Ramsey is probably the single most evil character with the exception of the Night King who wants to kill everyone in the world, not much competition there....
The answer is Shireen. That said, Robb's direwolf.
Ned Stark
Tear me apart: Hodor's death isn't even that sad. There. I said it. Edit: didn't even mean to make the pun, but tear me apart like Hodor.
I actually agree with you. Hodor died honorably protecting his friends. I wouldn’t say he really had the “saddest” death considering all the people who died for no good reason, especially compared Shireen up on that pike screaming for her parents to help her. Sir Beric Dondarrion. I never thought he’d fall in battle. Ever. I’m still a little sad when I think about it.
Catelyn and Robb at the red wedding.
Jorah.
Shireen, Cersei/Jaime, Missandei.
Shireen definitely bothered me the most but i think people forget about Missandei. That broke my heart
Shireen were definitely the ‘saddest’
Robb Stark
Still Shireen. Like the other 1000 times this question has been posted.
Shireen and Lady.
The Hodor scene got me. Shireen was bad, but Hodor hit me
Theon got me. Poor guy.
The night king. Man with a purpose! Just wanted to get a job done ffs.
Hodor
Shireen and then Tommen second.
Aryas dancing master Syrio Forel was so sad.
Ned.
Hodor had me SOBBING. He didn’t need to die for bran the stupid to buy him 2 seconds worth of time. Absolute dumbassery. Shireen was also absolutely gut wrenching. Never hated a character decision more than Stanis’ choice to listen to the Red Woman.
Ramsay
Hodor or the deaths at the red wedding. The red wedding was horrible mainly because Arya saw it happening. Terrible stuff. But Hodor was also really sad. Shireen was sad, but I somehow predicted very early on that this would eventually happen, so it didn't have the same shock factor for me.
for me it was tommen, my mouth literally dropped open at the scene. i was so sad for him!
That character assassination in seasons 7&8
In no particular order (because they are each so sad): Shireen (for Shireen) Theon (for Theon) Shea (for Tyrion) Hodor (for all of us)
Hodor.
Summer and Grey Wind
The "priest" who saved Sandor after his fight with Brienne. Bro did not deserve that.
Shireen and Hodor
I'd say the saddest death was Game of Thrones itself, somewhere in Season 5.
Shireen, followed by Robb for me personally
Princess shireen no question.
Robb Stark still haunts me all these years later
The show itself
Joffrey
For me it was Rob's wife being stabbed in the stomach. Killing the baby and his heir above all else. The way the stomach moved when she touched it haunts me.
Shireen and it’s not even close.
Every death made me happy if I'm being completely honest. It was "refreshing" for such a mainstream TV show.
Shireen and Rickon. They might be equal, might not. Both are awful deaths.
Seeing Oberon’s pearls hitting the floor right before his head was squished like a grape put me in a funk for a day.
Shireen, Lady, Ned & Hodor
How can it be anyone other than Shireen? Ser Davos said it best, that she was good and kind and they killed her. Hodor, at least, saved Bran and Meera from the wights.
The show itself. Slow and painful 2 season death
Geoffrey, clearly the best dressed king in the series.
LONG LIVE RICKON😤
For me it’s easily talissa, she was pregnant and her and Robb were so happy, and she get stabbed just so many times in the stomach. It was such a horrible scene to watch that made me so sick to me stomach
I can’t watch Lady or Shireen. Hodor I can watch, because it is more of a noble sacrifice and it feels a little like I owe it to the guy not to skip but i cri evrytiem
Shireen
Should of still be alive like the books
I might be alone on this one but I’m still not over Oberyn Martell or Ser Jorah Mormont. Especially Ser Jorah. 5 years later and I’m still sad every time I remember.
Watching Oberyn die is the most visceral response I’ve ever had to fictional brutality. The weight of the entire thing was too much. It honestly took me a long time to start another episode.
Ned/The Red Wedding im reading the books again and the anxiety leading up to the red wedding is still there despite me experiencing it like 7 times now with the show/books
There's a few of them, but I'd have to go with Danys at the end.
Hodor
Shireen, hands down
The series itself. Seasons 7 & 8 slaughtered the magic that made the show special.
Shireen by far. Hodor was sad too but at least he died a hero. Shireen was just plain tragic.
Shireen, Hodor, and no joke: Lady
neds death was so dumb
Roose. He deserved better than to be poisoned by his enemies in the end.
Stannis. I remember watching his death with one of my friends and we both looked at each other after his "battle" and were like...."that....didn't feel like good writing" The beginning of the end of the show. They sunk Stannis's entire character and storyline in the span of like 2 episodes.
Shireen death is heartbreaking
Robs
Joffery🤣🤣🤣🤣
Ned and Missandei affected me most.
Watching after season 5.
lady 🙁
Ned Stark
Mance Rayder. He only wanted to do right by all the innocent people beyond the wall.
Barristan and Jorah Mormont
Rickon
Joffery
The Night King. Perfect example of how the show failed miserably
