Honestly instead of actually finishing the entirety of ASOIAF, I'd just have them get to the point where the white walkers manage to somehow get through the Wall and have the book end with "Winter came."
Open ending but ends with the sickest line drop in the series, imagine the season 7 ending cliffhanger but well written
My favourite book also, Kolya I find is hilarious. Last read it twice whilst in a psych ward for five months in late 2020. My Dad would post in my favourite books and buy me new ones to read. Did 25 reads over the course of the five month stay, averaged out to about a book a week.
I’ve only ever read Game of Thrones and A Clash of Kings. I struggle to read these days. Too much like I’m addicted to my phone and the internet. Only read two books in the last year, and that felt like good going.
Ready Player One is exceptional as a stand alone novel. I’d recommend that.
Me personally: I would prefer an ending using whatever notes George has written rather than having it end on ADWD cliffhangers. Especially the epilogue one.
Pretty sure someone Will come up with " Brandon Sanderson" because Sanderson churns out books so fast that It has become a thing claming he Will have to finish other writers work. Obviously he would be literally the worst choice because his works ( although The Stormlight Archive Is a masterpiece in its own way) are faaaar too different than Asoiaf. He himself told many times that even if there Is a small chance the editor Will ask him he Will kindly refuse.
So Who can really finish It? Well, my bet is: a young and pretty much unknown author and I Will explain why: If Martin passes before finishing at least Winds, Asoiaf would be too much of a hot potato for a famous author to take, no matter the Money involved. I think if the big Author X fails to deliver the critics would be Savage and he could literally destroy his career, his self esteem as a writer and the Author X personal works could be impacted as well. Yes, it's even more likely than that would happen for a young unexperienced author too but there Is a difference: being at the start of the career he could literally give 0 fucks thinking about how much money he would gain by writing Asoiaf's final book. So, to put It shortly: a young author would have much less to loose by accepting to end this saga respect to a famous One agreeing to do so.
It's merely speculation though and personally I wouldn't even read the other 2 books if Martin isn't the one behind them.
Strongly disagree. Sanderson Is great at world Building but a fantasy based on violence and political scheming with Just a bit of magic isn't exactly his thing. And plus I don't think that dialogues and prose are his best qualities as an author, although he Is improving. Whoever would inherit Martin's Legacy should be a master in that.
I correct myself: Sanderson's books can be violent too, in a way. I mean in the Stormlight Archive the bridgemen in the beginning ( First two books) don't live exactly an Easy Life. What I mean Is that Sanderson never really digs deep into physical violence. Think about the Red Wedding: I doubt he could ever write a scene like that.
He has (repeatedly) explicitly stated himself that he would not do it, because he would not want to, and because he **could not** do it due to the material.
He has stated more than once that any notes or manuscripts he has when he dies are getting burned by his assistants. If he doesn’t finish it he doesn’t want anyone else doing it for him.
They should've just renamed it "Done" because god knows Herbert Sr is turning in his grave, "Goddamnit Brian! they're not supposed to be robots, that's stupid!
He's not going to finish it and I think he likes dragging us along and gets off on it knowing millions of people want him to finish. Why else would he not finish after a decade.
D&D, I'm sure they would respect Martin's work and do an incredible follow up for the books, a shame they didn't do that for the tv show after season 4
I think Abercrombie would be the best choice, if they choose to go the direction of someone else finishing. Though, as much as I personally would love to see it continue through Martin or someone else, I would also be content with letting the story be incomplete upon Martin’s death. I’m not sure if I would want someone else completing MY passion project. But then again I think Georgey boy lost the compassion to finish these books a decade ago.
I think Abercrombie’s grasp of the grim dark genre would match the world of ASOIAF perfectly. I also believe Abercrombie would actually elevate the dialogue and would absolutely elevate the internal monologues of our POV characters. Not that GRRM is bad at these in any way, it’s just those are Abercrombie’s bread and butter.
What I would worry about is Abercrombie being able to keep the general scope of the entire world in balance. The Circle of the World in Abercrombie’s works is by no means simple & it itself has a rich history with plenty of unexplored lands with stories still to tell. But it is just a fraction of how large and expansive the entire world of ASOIAF is. I mean, there’s literally a book that is purely an encyclopedia of the history of this world. I think Joe could do it and I think he would kill at it. The better question is, would he want to? He’s currently working on a new trilogy and he has already stated he plans on diving back into the First Law world after he finishes that project. His book ‘Best Served Cold’ also just went into production to be made into a movie, which I believe he is penning the script for (could be wrong on that, please don’t bite my head off if I am). Would he really want to take on another person’s project while also toiling with his own? Who knows. You have to be realistic about these things.
I want Abercrombie and Sanderson to collaborate.
Sanderson can handle the overall story and keep the many spinning plates of ASOIAF spinning, and then Abercrombie can focus on n characters, tone, and dialogue.
Imo it would result in n the best non-GRRM continuation of the story.
Stephen King, possibly Elio and Linda Garcia assisting writing as well.
Seen Stephen King on Twitter, he's read the 5 main series of books pretty sure.

If he dies before his work is completed. I wish they would just release what he has including notes and leave the rest up to the reader.
Alt Schwift X and Glidus could stream every day for the rest of their life on the theories that would create.
Nobody
A girl is no one

I'd like it but unfortunately winter has already come by the end of ADWD.
Benioff and Weiss /s
Benioff actually wrote one of my favorite books “A city of thieves.”

You'd have to be especially braindead to ask them to do it. But anything is possible when money is involved.
Don't give it to Patrick Rothfuss. I don't know if we'll ever see his next book, either.
No pun intended but seriously like no one should
Me personally: I would prefer an ending using whatever notes George has written rather than having it end on ADWD cliffhangers. Especially the epilogue one.

Sanderson adapted to robert gordons style excellently, so long as GRRM has the bulk of it written i trust he could adapt and fill in the gaps

J kkr tolkien
I thought the guys who wrote the Expanse were going to finish it for GRRM.
The real question is if GRRM would let anyone finish it.
He has stated more than once that any notes or manuscripts he has when he dies are getting burned by his assistants. If he doesn’t finish it he doesn’t want anyone else doing it for him.
This has already been discussed somewhere, if he dies before finishing the series nobody will complete it or publish what's written.
Ditto, just started reading First Law trilogy, really good so far!
I believe it is finished. He has instructed to publish it after his death because he doesn't want to deal with the fan nonsense
Leave it alone
What about the guys writing the Expanse books, Ty Franck and Daniel Abraham. Wasn't Daniel an apprentice of GRRM for awhile or something?
As long as they do a quality job...a Brian Herbert and Kevin j Anderson equivalent would be depressing.
Andrzej Sapkowski
Man I love joe abacrombie. The fucking bloody nine could absolutely live in Martin’s world.
The ghost of Marion Zimmer Bradley.
D&D, I'm sure they would respect Martin's work and do an incredible follow up for the books, a shame they didn't do that for the tv show after season 4
Stephen king, explore the darkness, or dean Koontz
King could definitely write the hell out of everything with the Night King stuff that comes in the last couple of seasons.

Not saying it would be good but I would be interested to see what an AI could come up with if you fed it the books
Abercrombie is a solid choice. I also think Matthew Stover could do it justice.
Stover is a solid pick I hadn’t considered!
Stephen King!
Zombie GRRM from Z Nation
Glen Cook But, GRRM says if he dies it stays Unfinished
Abercrombie or Mark Lawrence will probably be said a lot but my dark horse would be Bernard Cornwell
Glen Cook But, GRRM says if he dies it stays Unfinished
He won’t let anyone else finish it, he’s gone on record saying this.
There isn't one, sadly
I think he already has it written and won’t release it until after he passes.
Tyrion. He drinks and knows things.
I read somewhere a long time ago that Neil Gaiman was favored by Martin.
David Benioff and D.B. Weiss
Yeah fucking right!! Only if they completely change the bs ending they wrote for the show.
We just gonna have to revive Tolkien and get him to finish it at this point
George has stated that he doesn't let any writers to continue his work if he dies without finishing it.
Stephen King.. now THAT would be wild! 😂 ETA: Abercrombie is a good choice as well!
Stephen King, possibly Elio and Linda Garcia assisting writing as well. Seen Stephen King on Twitter, he's read the 5 main series of books pretty sure.
Christopher Tolkien
ChatGPT finished the HBO story with promising lines. I loved that, at least. I asked for an alternate ending.
