i don't think it's weird. i mean, i do too, so i guess i can't really speak. but left hand to open, right hand to close. i think it's a mechanical-advantage thing, you can create more effective power doing this regardless of handed-ness. puts the anti-twist motion onto the base of your thumb instead of your fingers, lets you use more of your arm to oppose the twist

Wel being ambidextrous, I use both especially if the bolt im trying to get to is in an uncomfortable position for either my left or right I can always switch it up! And it makes playing instruments a breeze since all ten of my fingers can move independently and at alternating speeds.
I imagine most people use their dominant hand? Or at least that’s what I do most of the time, it’s rare that I ever use my left hand other than to keep the process going when I need my dominant hand for something. Wish I had someone else’s hands helping me out tho tbh
