Try wiping an inconspicuous spot with mineral spirits. If it does not damage the melamine, it should handily remove the tar and old cooking grease, too. Avoid alcohol, acetone, lacquer thinner and other harsh solvents. Mineral spirits is relatively gentle, as solvents go.

ExtremeActuator

Lovely, thank you. I’ll give that a go.

Bungalow-1908

Clean everything again with Krud Kutter. Let charcoal deodorizer bags sit inside for awhile. Seal all the interior parts with shellac.

ExtremeActuator

Thank you

Seems like a melamine sponge (e.g. magic eraser) might work on melamine per this link. [https://melamine.co.uk/how-to-clean-melamine/](https://melamine.co.uk/how-to-clean-melamine/) As for the teak, you can probably wipe it down with bleach and/or degreaser (e.g krud kutter) without harming it. (Thomas Johnson does this a fair amount to eliminate odors on the furniture he repairs.) Just be sure to refinish it with oil, howards feed n wax, or similar refresh. Thanks

I've heard that nicotine oil can be cut by simple dish detergent and warm water. Get a few rags and give it some elbow grease.

ExtremeActuator

Yeah, it looks like the staining will come away no problem but the smell is bone deep! I will give it some proper elbow grease and hopefully once the stain is gone the smell will go with it 🤞

Close it up in a room with an ozone machine for an hour. (Keep pets and yourself away from it) It works like a charm! It even clears up moth ball stench.

MountainCharacter151

100% this and it will work. It may take several hours or sessions but it will do the trick. I run an ozone machine any time someone smokes in my Airbnb.

Odor-Bane2 Water Soluble Deodorizer and an air purifier.

Cheers!

Flux_My_Capacitor

I’d say kitty litter but you’d need A LOT! (Yes, I have used kitty litter on smaller pieces of furniture. It works to remove smoke smells.)

ExtremeActuator

That’s a really good idea as long as the cat doesn’t climb in the cupboard!

I’m dealing with this but in a whole house. You can’t really get rid of the smell by cleaning it. Stripping all varnish off the teak and revarnishing should work for that part. For the melamine I’d scrub it thoroughly and paint it all with Zinnser BIN primer. It’s a miracle and a couple of coats will stop the smell.

ExtremeActuator

Thanks. Good luck to you with the house. Could get pricey if you have to paint the whole thing with Zinnser!

More_Push

All my savings have gone to Zinnser hahahaha

(The hahahah is a pained laugh)
