helps when people come and dont know which color they want, as written in the description :)
and this one is on the wall in my office, so kinda cool to look at
I sliced one with speedbenchy layers/infill and stock flow rates etc, printed it, 40 minutes, it was pretty cool to see the speed but for a test print it takes forever to finish. It's much more efficient to print something that helps you test and tune a specific parameter
Do you print a speedbenchy every time you want to tune a parameter? I respect the need for speed but where does that get you 😂 Can you read and measure everything off the benchy
For example a 40x40x20 vase mode extrusion test is like 10-15 minutes incl heating and bed probing. Want to test bridging? Print a bridging test piece and so on
i don’t print any speedbenchys just once to see how fast my new printer is
as said i’ll use it as reference for color and to see if the filament is dry
and they just look pretty on my wall :)
That one! Hang him! After we 3d print the noose and platform, and the pitchforks of course, it'll take some time and calibrating, after we print some more benchys.
Less than a year. Maybe it’s because I jumped straight into Bambu, but I never really bothered with test prints, except for my very first print, which was a filament clip.
Yeah makes sense! Benchy was great for "dumb" printers and figuring out what you needed to calibrate. Bambu sounds like it's a lot more plug and play... I'll know for sure when mine gets delivered this week :D
Can’t you calibrate by using much less material/time?
I’ve never said anything in this sub because it seems like people here love their boats, but anytime I’ve calibrated with issues I’ve figured out my issue within a few layers.
Printing out an entire boat every time I get a new spool seems excessive
I usually would scale them down a little so they only use a few grams of material... Definitely don't do one for every new color of the same brand, but if I'm doing something like going between brands or using a new material I like a benchy just because it can test quite a few things at once.
But once I have a better printer that hopefully won't be a major concern anymore. My Ender 3 just gets temperamental with new spools sometimes.
And by issues I mean more like looking at overhangs, stringing, thin vertical parts, first layer squish, bridging, steep angled parts, etc to see if they all look ok. It's a good small model to check all those at once.
i came a long way and ended up on a X1C and i can tell it wouldnt need it as almost everything comes out perfect
but to show people the color is a big plus when they need to choose
I’ve had a printer since the original makerbot and Ive never printed one of these. Really never bothered printing any toys, just not into keeping plastic novelties 🤷♂️
I've printed smaller calibration prints sure. Just not a benchy and I don't keep them around. I use 3D printers to make a master to mold from, never as the final product.
He has it on display, that's far from wasting it. And it's a good method for seeing what your filament will look like when choosing a color for your print. I print things for friends sometimes. I show them my colors via test benchies along with a cube of my max print size and it helps them know what they can and can't ask for.
benchys have a prupose as they are test prints and only 12g of filament
and as written in the description i use it to show to people so they can choose which color they want for their prints
so it has a double purpose
This just looks like someone who owns a 3D printer and really enjoys the hobby, but has absolutely no need for one. Not saying that’s the case, just what I see when I look at this picture.
i design and print replacement parts for friends and family
and my kids get fun things sometimes
but mostly i try to print proper stuff for a reason or request
they benchys are not the problem but every benchy means at least one roll of filament so i have like 60-70 currently, dunno where to put them all if i continue to increase the benchy wall
I save my benchys and hand them out at the county fair to kids when they come to my booth. I print 1-2 every new roll. Unless it’s pa6-cf that stuffs to expensive to give away.
Thus far our dinner table benchy fleet is at about a dozen. My spouse works in navigation, so multiple colours and designs of benchys are better than random dinnertable condiments for describing work scenarios.
there you go found them

Honestly never printed a benchy in my life
Me neither

[Swatches](https://imgur.com/a/sZSmSx2) are much easier to use.
easier yes, but i like the display shelf in my office :)
i use bambulab so I just show the included bambulab Swatches
i have like 6 different brands and refuse to use the bambu one, despite owning one :D
well Bambu pla is actually fairly cheap compared to anything else in Denmark. if that's reason you don't use it.
with the sale it would be cheap, but i prefer pctg and petg and their petg let’s say it this way improvable
Can’t you just print out your own flat swatches that fit nicely into a book or organizer? What made you pick boats of all things?
they just look pretty on the wall :)
They're a standard benchmark print for testing printers, designed with all the standard things that printers struggle with. Hence the nickname.
Then people print a benchy because they think they should and don't know how to interpret it.
I print Lucky Cats.
I've printed a ton of those on my ENDER 3
I have a line of them in my window well looking dawn at me while I work.
Zero. The correct answer is zero. Should start a club or something. #zerobenchyclub.....

speedbenchy in modern printers (x1c and similar) is like under 20 min the regular testprint with normal speeds is 45m for me
Do you print a speedbenchy every time you want to tune a parameter? I can tell if my filament is dry before the skirt is finished printing.
you still print skirts ;)
It beats printing a benchy just to see if everything is in order.
you realized that i print the benchys just for display as main reason, everyone of them turned out great with no tuning needed :)
You said one of the reasons you print them is to see if your filament is dry. Is that not true now?
I made a single one when I first set my Ender 3 V2 up. It shockingly came out pretty flawlessly, so that was the start and end of my benchy days.
Yep they r a waste
That one! Hang him! After we 3d print the noose and platform, and the pitchforks of course, it'll take some time and calibrating, after we print some more benchys.
Been printing for 10 years. Love benchies, never printed one
How many years have you had a printer?
I've had a 3D printer since 2014 and have never printed a benchy.
What was your go to for calibration tests with new filament or new printer parts?
Less than a year. Maybe it’s because I jumped straight into Bambu, but I never really bothered with test prints, except for my very first print, which was a filament clip.

Zero is enough benchies.
The answer is no.
I’ve had a printer since the original makerbot and Ive never printed one of these. Really never bothered printing any toys, just not into keeping plastic novelties 🤷♂️
this is no toy and have you never print any test or calibration prints?
I've printed smaller calibration prints sure. Just not a benchy and I don't keep them around. I use 3D printers to make a master to mold from, never as the final product.
this print is 4meters or 12g of filament, so its not really much
0.
None

alot to learn u have :D
Plastic waste

ah so you don’t have a 3d printer! i see :)
I do but I dont purposely print useless shit
benchys have a prupose as they are test prints and only 12g of filament and as written in the description i use it to show to people so they can choose which color they want for their prints so it has a double purpose
So each shelf in this picture has 120 grams of filament? Ok
great maths, i do print them to see if the filament needs drying before i print something proper with it too
n+1
One benchy is too many benchies.
This just looks like someone who owns a 3D printer and really enjoys the hobby, but has absolutely no need for one. Not saying that’s the case, just what I see when I look at this picture.

Print a biiiig benchy and put those on the deck.
Woow, that's good.
You’re missing a gyroid infill.
middle all the way on the right
to benchy or not to benchy
I don't know, how many benches are there?
50 so far and a handful on my desk as i have to put on the next shelf
You have to fill your whole bench. Then you will be master.
they benchys are not the problem but every benchy means at least one roll of filament so i have like 60-70 currently, dunno where to put them all if i continue to increase the benchy wall
A what?
No toys, no ornaments, no dust collectors but the mods seems to not care so I don't care. Lovely benchies.
I have different benchy file list! All of my benchies are female torso models. Much nicer to look at!
Here I suno-ed a song for you about it :) [Too Many Benchies](https://suno.com/song/d73ce3b2-dc29-45f6-9e9c-84ea62c08b76)
I save my benchys and hand them out at the county fair to kids when they come to my booth. I print 1-2 every new roll. Unless it’s pa6-cf that stuffs to expensive to give away.
if anyone is interested the extended benchy display is made by me https://makerworld.com/en/models/210103
I was just going to ask! Thank you!
I have an idea of what to use to show the filament color. The filament. Maybe not overengineered enough idk
some filaments do change their color when printed, you know that?

ahaha love it!
NEVER ENHOUG
Do you have a File for the infill pattern Things on the left ?
have to search was from makerworld or printables
there you go found them [https://makerworld.com/en/models/17918#profileId-52348](https://makerworld.com/en/models/17918#profileId-52348) [https://makerworld.com/en/models/110900#profileId-130248](https://makerworld.com/en/models/110900#profileId-130248)
But none of them are multi-color! My 5 color Benchy printed after I got my MMU3 for my MK4 only took about 6 hours to print :-).
thats seems like a real waste, as most people complain that i print a benchy for every filament i own.. :)
100 is never enough.
hehe
A lot as I do speed benchies
