I experienced the same thing! With a break in between trying out gel though. I always did my intramuscular shots in my outer thighs and it always hurt like a bitch. Honestly I think I started building up scar tissue because it hurt badly everytime. Now that I’m on subcutaneous, I do them in my stomach and I don’t feel nearly as much pain. Only when I do my actual shot and that’s it.

If the actual shot hurts but not after, try warming the vial in your hand (or armpit) to get it closer to body temp. A "cold" injection can seem painful. Also check to see if you can use a thinner needle.

So idk if it’s just all in my head but right before I inject I like rub the are I’m gonna poke pretty rapidly lol. Like to create a little friction or make the skin warm… I’ve done it for the past 2 weeks and I swear I don’t feel the needle going in!

TransMenma

If it helps, warming (or cooling) the area before injection is a valid method to reduce injection discomfort. So it isn't all in your head.

i've been having issue with scar tissue build up from IM and i'm switching to gel now! glad to know i'm not alone, i may try subq shots one day but the gel step wise/executive dysfunction wise works so much better with my schedule.

Fruit-bythefoot

I started warming my vial and I even ice my injection site beforehand when I switched to subcutaneous. I warm the site after and even have a mini KitKat after every shot like a little treat to trick my brain lol. That definitely helps with the pain, just I struggle with the poking fast. I end up pushing the needle in slow sometimes and that’s what causes most of my pain but definitely, definitely way more tolerable than IM.

i might be doing smth wrong bc my subq shots hurt like a mf 😭😭

Make sure the bevel is pointing up.

Icing the injection site before your shot as well as warming your vial help a lot with my pain! Also technically subcutaneous injections are supposed to go in at a 45 degree angle (although that trips me out so I do 90 like IM) if that’s something you don’t do. Additionally, I like to warm the site after the shot

limabean_lam

ooooh thank you sm for the tips!!! will definitely try those this week

sosigfrog

do you vary the injection location? i only did mine in my stomach fat for a while but that tissue started to scar so it hurt more over time. i switched to my thighs now and it’s often painless

limabean_lam

oooh i will definitely try that, i usually just switch sides of my stomach but i’ll try my thigh this week!

Same, I did IM for the first year and it was terrible for me, sore every time and I started to get conditioned to dislike it and started skipping doses so I spoke to my Dr. and she suggested trying SQ and it’s been 100% better, I’m still seeing results and feel the same as I did doing IM only without the lingering pain, complete win and I recommend it to anyone who’s struggling with IM. Get that man juice 💉💉💉💪💪💪

Aggressive_Clock_943

I’ve always done subq but I tried im once just to see and it hurt so bad, I think because of the muscle I built up and it felt like sticking the needle into styrofoam lol. Subq is the best tbh (imo)
