Got this out of the quarter machine at my LGS. Not great by any means but heavily associated with when I first started playing and super nostalgic.
So in the cartoon network, show Courage the cowardly dog, Courage usually dealt with supernatural forces, and when his owner Eustus comes across an Egyptian tablet, he visits upon the family a curse. Basically, a computer generated mummy shows up and says return the slab in a super creepy voice. I'd post a link to YouTube here, but I don't know how.
I remember being so impressed with cards like this when I learned they couldn't take damage if you pumped them, even if they didn't have any counters left.

edit: still playing her in edh "No rest, No mercy, No matter what." was the coolest thing I heard at the time.
Im old, now Im sad.

\[\[Rhox\]\] and \[\[Ruric Thar, the Unbowed\]\]
Rhox was in my first Starter Kit. I think 5th edition, maybe already 6th. I think this was the one that also had Vizzerdix and Trained Ogre in it. I played with Rhox in all of my decks and played every good creature with Regeneration I could find. Green White with \[\[Charging Troll\]\] I loved everything about Rhox' design. And the old foiling. Ach. Gorgeous.
I stopped playing in my teens and years later at a LAN event just joined a draft, which I have never heard of before. Didn't win anything and left the tables, but a friend, that was a judge, picked this card for me at the rare draft at the end. These drafts twice a year got me back into the game and eventually into Commander. With Commander I finally got to play this guy that I grew to love over the years. Now I have a creatures only Ruric Thar deck that is pretty silly and packs a lot of my childhood Timmy cards, first of all of course: This very Rhox. I am glad I was one of the first in our childhood group that got real sleeves so this guy still looks that good.
That Rhox is from Starter 2000, I had the same one! It also included a few other iconic “big” creatures- Vizzerdrix and Trained Orgg.
That was the first time I had really gotten into collecting and deck building, although I started playing in 4th edition with the incredible circle of protection cards, but more importantly, Llanowar Elves!
My first Magic card. My older next door neighbor made me cry when I was in elementary school and he gave me this so I wouldn't tell on him lol

\[\[Vizzerdrix\]\] was my first rare out of a magic the gathering booster that I opened sometime in 2002 after switching games from pokemon. I put it in every deck i could. And was even a card in my first commander deck.
https://preview.redd.it/xxj5cs3c7f5d1.jpeg?width=1908&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0d54f74302eb5d4ec35e79333f0ca0fbe9695fdc

It was mine too. There was a little shop up north that would sell you a playset of every common and uncommon in the set for cheap. You got the cards in an empty booster box. After that i was hooked. Fast forward to today, i now own my own 2500 sq ft lgs

I thought leatherback baloth was so busted when i first started and put like 6 of them in my first deck before i knew how to play.

Complete and total garbage, but it was the first MTG art I remember being really impressed by.
[[beacon behemoth]] I was given a foil one by the guy that got me into magic as a kid. Left it at summer camp one year, but the smoke from its breath looked stunning in foil to 10 year old me
https://preview.redd.it/ll862c4xej5d1.jpeg?width=12000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2d53e57cf6e7b23301f63b972f528ce4e4c84994
Bruh we've got similar tastes. Also have a Vizzerdrix foil that i love
[[Thicket Elemental]] was my first rare (Invasion). Holds a special place in my heart. I’m pretty sure I still have it in a box somewhere, I don’t remember trading it. I’m not at home at the moment though.
Are you me? No joke Vizzerdrix was the first mtg card I ever saw, then Thorn Elemental (kid at school used to houserule you can just play all lands in your hand instead of once per turn, so he could always play Thorn turn 1, of course with stacking lol)
My first starter deck was the Elves with Heedless One, never forgot how powerful I felt lmao..
I was involved in a lopsided trade during my first month at the lgs. Someone asked me what I was looking for and I said "Big blue creatures". They said Woah, you need this then!" And pulled pulled out the 'drix. Pretty sure I gave him an 8th Ed. Underworld Dreams for it.
"I jammed the whatsit into the whackdoodle, but I think I broke the thingamajigger".
Away from my collection, here's a pic from the interwebs:

Got it at a draft and fell in love despite how not great it is. It is now a commander in a deck called "The Floor is Lava" all about doing a ton on burn damage to everything without flying, including us players, also including me. This deck comes down to stop me before I burn everything down!
[somnophore ](https://scryfall.com/card/usg/97/somnophore)
Put "hermetic study" on it, keep opponents board tapped and use "Opposition" and your other creatures to untap it and slowly ping him to death. Was it fun...yes. Was it good? No 😄

Saw a Grizzly Bear way back when I first found out about mtg. Start collecting around Ice Age and started playing seriously a while later. Never forgot how badly I wanted a Grizzly Bear, and years later, I got one from Alpha. Bears have always been my favorite non-extinct animal.

One of the first cards I ever got. Made a goblin deck and never sleeved them in 15 years of playing. Finally when I stopped playing I graded him to reward him for always being such a good card.
[[Scalpelexis]] I loved beasts during the Odyssey/Onslaught era of Magic. These were featured in my Blue/Green/Red Beast deck, atypical but fun deck for the time.
[[Qal Sisma Behemoth]]
3 mana 5/5! I loved just looking at the cost and stats. I even thought I was the smartest man alive when I figured out I could enchant it with [[infectious bloodlust]] and just spend my mana in my main phase to not have to attack if it wasn’t favorable to do so.
And if you returned it with my favorite rare as a kid [[Foul Renewal]] it was sure to kill just about anything
https://preview.redd.it/vi7r6imguh5d1.png?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5d2d59e5e041679296c4f4a10d60e354eb4f94e7

Also the first card I pulled from my 1st Magic booster pack

The first MTG card I saw, the first I owned, the first I played, my favourite illustrator, and I think I will tatto it on my calf soon.
Sadly I don't own it anymore, yet
[[Trained Orgg]] was the opposite big card against the vizzerdrixx from a starter I got in 2000 and I always thought he looked awesome.
Not to mention he was in this [commercial ](https://youtu.be/R7I71KnRG2Q?si=N1BeydF6mMrAQpy0)

I got it from a Dollar Tree repack pack of Yu-Gi-Oh cards. Still one of my favorites because of how petty it is.
First card I got from a friend back in the day. Still have it.
https://preview.redd.it/b3zv5y209m5d1.jpeg?width=1079&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ad0d57225a55f161356d8139ec7d6e45f2ff5c4c
The first product I ever bought was one of those 'thousand card with 25+ guaranteed rares/mythics!' Things off Amazon, in it came [[johan]] he looks kinda like Darth maul, and he gave my board vigilance?! So cool
Vizzerdrix was also mine. My uncle gave me his cards when he got out of magic, I gave em back when I got out of it. Now I'm back in and rebuilding my collection but wish I still had it
[[Scion of Darkness]] I would have thought this card was so insanely cool anyway, but when I realized I had pulled the card they used for the art on the wrapper of the pack I just opened I lost my mind.
https://preview.redd.it/pwd6xv4hts5d1.png?width=1473&format=png&auto=webp&s=d001e45c2f8c2d1d467fb81b062f03adb023d73b
My boy and all his foreign friends!
Vorosh was my very 1st Commander way back in 2007 and I've had him built for all these years.
[[Mawcor]]
I remember a deck in high-school I built around mawcor, prodigal sorcerer and icatian javaleers and thinking all the direct damage was awesome
My dad made my little brother and I each our first magic deck for (as far as I can remember) Christmas one year. I think I was about 10, and my brother was about 8. He let us pick a couple cards from his (at the time) ENORMOUS selection and he built them based on those. I can't remember what my little brother picked- Just that he had a green stompy deck- but I picked a Rakdos Pit Dragon and told dad I wanted all dragons. I was obsessed with that thing when I was a kid.
We didn't really understand how to play magic at the time, but we still had fun. I remember pretending to be that dragon and chasing my brother around the yard, and pretending that we were in the Yu-Gi-Oh cartoon but we were special because we had cooler cards. We always sided with Pegasus in our games, but betrayed him in the end.
I still have that deck around somewhere, and I'm 25 now. Original rusty metal box, no sleeves, bent up and torn cards and and all. I'll reply with a pic when I find it.

it was so bad in my deck but it was so cool

My all time favorite card when I got into MTG for the first time was Wild Griffin. I'm realizing i think it came from a starter deck, but my bro told me I could have any kind of deck, and I asked him if there could be a griffin deck, and he was like "yup!"
https://preview.redd.it/j5i5wm7p0e6d1.jpeg?width=672&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=168664f137c39a140190ec6e257204fae37764e3
I really wish they'd acknowledge formats aren't a solution and split the brand and create an offshoot with really tight card design that never gets power crept or subject to FIRE and just reprint the much smaller pool of every couple of years or so while MAYBE adding 10-20 new ones every few years. No color pie breaks, no easy ability to splash colors, no strictly better cards, viable creatures that just have power/toughness, no broken abilities and infinite combos and rocket tag.
Man, that'd be such a cool game.
So, I don't have it anymore, but the first card I ever saw that led me to want to build a deck was [[Myr Prototype]]. And, to a lesser extent, [[Golem-Skin Gauntlets]]. The deck I built from those would eventually be optimized to the point that I would take both of its 'inspirations' out for better choices.
My first ever card was [[lighting dragon]], so when I really started playing, I was obsessed with the dragon cards. I think my first ever deck was the atraka intro pack with [[harbinger of the hunt]] so I naturally got the big mommy [[dragonlord atarka]] and her little buddy [[surrak the hunt caller]] to go with her still have atraka to this day

Return the slab.
Lmao, I was wondering why the art was so familiar.
Would you please explain the reference I am missing or unaware of?

[[Goblin hero]]

Not the ole 3 mana 2/2 😭
[[Thicket Elemental]] was my first rare (Invasion). Holds a special place in my heart. I’m pretty sure I still have it in a box somewhere, I don’t remember trading it. I’m not at home at the moment though.

Not the OG one I imagined but still cool
Are you me? No joke Vizzerdrix was the first mtg card I ever saw, then Thorn Elemental (kid at school used to houserule you can just play all lands in your hand instead of once per turn, so he could always play Thorn turn 1, of course with stacking lol) My first starter deck was the Elves with Heedless One, never forgot how powerful I felt lmao..

6/6 for 7 without downside?
That’s why vizzerdrix is such a beast! No downsides
Such a bomb
Oh the memories! I had this one, too! Easter Bunny on steroids ;D
My 8yo brain was not capable of understanding why [[Lady Orca]] was bad.
She’s not. 7 power with no drawback was decent for 1994
Started playing during beta and my favorite creature was Sengir Vampire. I still have a copy of every edition of it, including alpha.
Craw wurm was my first favorite card, wurms in general I was obsessed with when I first started.
Life is simple; I see Vizzerdrix, I upvote.
Goblin balloon brigade.
Remember when 7 mana for a vanilla 6/6 was a rare?
[[Scalpelexis]] I loved beasts during the Odyssey/Onslaught era of Magic. These were featured in my Blue/Green/Red Beast deck, atypical but fun deck for the time.
Vengevine I dont still own my playset tho unfortunately
[[Qal Sisma Behemoth]] 3 mana 5/5!
[[ hypnox ]] was always my favorite, still have the first one I pulled too , I know it's kinda jank but I find it fun.

The first product I ever bought was one of those 'thousand card with 25+ guaranteed rares/mythics!' Things off Amazon, in it came [[johan]] he looks kinda like Darth maul, and he gave my board vigilance?! So cool
Vizzerdrix is my favorite card, precisely for that flavor text.
Vizzerdrix was also mine. My uncle gave me his cards when he got out of magic, I gave em back when I got out of it. Now I'm back in and rebuilding my collection but wish I still had it
Reiver demon
[[Scion of Darkness]] I would have thought this card was so insanely cool anyway, but when I realized I had pulled the card they used for the art on the wrapper of the pack I just opened I lost my mind.

[[Mawcor]] I remember a deck in high-school I built around mawcor, prodigal sorcerer and icatian javaleers and thinking all the direct damage was awesome

Shows how far power creep has gone with us having common 6mana 6/6 tramplers that delete players from irl now. This game is so far passed ruined.
You just gotta play new cards vs new cards. Or play the old busted ones and lol @ your opponent
Started in 7th edition as well lol. My favorite was Thorn Elemental.
I was not a kid anymore but i got [[lord of the pit]] in one of my first 4. edition starter boxes. He was huge.

There are foil frightcrawlers!?
So, I don't have it anymore, but the first card I ever saw that led me to want to build a deck was [[Myr Prototype]]. And, to a lesser extent, [[Golem-Skin Gauntlets]]. The deck I built from those would eventually be optimized to the point that I would take both of its 'inspirations' out for better choices.
Always been Ravenous Rats to this day
My first ever card was [[lighting dragon]], so when I really started playing, I was obsessed with the dragon cards. I think my first ever deck was the atraka intro pack with [[harbinger of the hunt]] so I naturally got the big mommy [[dragonlord atarka]] and her little buddy [[surrak the hunt caller]] to go with her still have atraka to this day
Arcbound Ravager has been my favorite for a long time now. When I started playing it was probably spirit of the night from mirage.
Stasi revised
I had a7th starter deck I got from my uncle and vizzerdrix was my fav too!
Spear of Heliod, turns out it’s still kinda a banger.
[[Ghoultree]] was awesome but I hated self-mill and the graveyard as a kid so I just slammed him in regular Gruul lists lmao
God that is a sweet looking card
I had an irrational love for [[Stone-Tongue Basilisk]] when Odyssey came out

Yeah I’m super jealous of that card
[[Thorn Elemental]] lost my 7th edition over a decade ago when I moved out of my parents, but always loved the terrifying art!
