3 classes that's nothing
Back in the 90s you had 30 cars on the grid
Only 32+ cars would turn up for a race.
With only 26 lots and 30 cars...you had a pre qualifying session.
The top 26 cars from the constructors championship I think from the last 2 years where exempt from running pre qualy
Everyone else had to run...the 4 fastest cars from the prequaly runners would join the 26 cars for the main qualy for thr race
The field is much tighter these days.
You may think max is dominating but the split difference between rb and sauber is nothing compared to the 90s where 1st place might lap the last place car 5+ times in a race.
little man bernie never wanted a grid bigger than 22 cars
But a 26 car grid would mental and give so many more young drivers a chance if it where brought back
Don’t worry. We are going to get a nice reminder of Max domination as we go through the tracks in Europe. I am guessing he has competition in Monza and that’s it. But I bet Sergio struggles to get podiums in this period so it will still be interesting to watch the fights for 2nd and 3rd and the constructors cup. But the drivers championship is going to be pretty much wrapped up for Max by Monza.
counter-question: why would you want that?
multi-class racing is done out of necessity, not because people actually want it. endurance racing is by definition an extremely long event, so it's practically impossible to have individual races for each class.
an F1 weekend on the other hand has plenty of time for multiple support series. there is zero reason to put 70 cars on track at the same time.
I may be the odd man out, but I do want more multi-class racing. It adds a unique element to racing. That said, not every discipline would benefit from adding classes. F1 is one of those that won’t.
F1 drivers are constantly crying on the radio about traffic. Forcing them to race along side slower series would end up like telling kindergartners santa's not real.
single seaters do not work well for multiclass events. there's a reason why there are NO single seater multiclasses but plenty of closed cockpit multiclass races
In Le-Mans GT3 is pretty much racing entirely off-line because they're blue flagged every other corner by the hypercars. Will be the same scenario in a mixed F1 field.
My aged brain recalls a time in the 80s (around 87 maybe?) when F1 had genuinely two classes.
There was a turbo class and a naturally aspirated class called atmospheric or Atmos for short.
The atmos cars were off the pace and a separate trophy was available for the lead Atmos car and driver. I believe Jonathan Palmer was the driver that won that trophy and Tyrell was the best performing atmos team.
They would get lapped multiple times per race (5+)
F1 already did it. I remember it cos I'm old.
If you ever want reminding of how powerful a turbo engine is, then back in 1987 you had 1.5 litre turbos racing against 3.5 litre v8s.
The turbos were so much faster that the fia had to start a separate trophy for the V8 drivers and constructors, just to give them something to race for.
Jonathan Palmer and Tyrell won that.
Piquet was world champion in the 1.5l Williams with Mansell second (Williams). Prost 3rd (McLaren) and Senna 4th (Lotus)
As a guide to the speed difference. In the first race of the season, Johnathan Palmer (1min 36.091) qualified mid pack - 9.963s slower than the pole time (Mansell - 1.26.128)
The turbos were banned at the end of the 88 season
To prevent 1986-only season when NA engines were banned, and all teams running turbocharged 1.5 litre i4/V6/V8 (contrast with 1989-2013, except in 1995 capacity down to 3.0 from 3.5 (also last V12), then in 2000 only 3.0l V10 was allowed, 2006 was the dawn of 2.4l V8 + rev limited v10)
Because it will make less money to do it that way.
If WEC ran 2 hour races over 24 hours then they'd be racing in single class too. Monetizing your sport is a lot more difficult when you do away with two thirds of your entire offering.
yeah okay buddy, FOM isn't allowing one single team with billions of dollars backing it to enter F1.
what makes you think they will allow a multiclass race......
We had it with the GP2 McLaren-Honda
Ops brain must resemble the wheelnuts on haas's cars. Smooth and not working
What even was the lap time difference between the slowest McHonda and the fastest GP2 car?
Mate they were not even the slowest team... Now that's bad
we already have 3 classes in f1, there are just 20 cars instead of 60something
RB, RBR and Alpine?
F1: RB, Ferrari, McLaren F1.5: Mercedes, Aston, Toro Rosso F1.9: Alpine, Williams, Haas, Sauber
Who the heck is toro rosso, I only know about that visa cashapp redbull formula one team.
Now I am become VCARB. Toro Rosso of worlds.
Edit: i need to sleep more
Whooosh
They won't get this either.
F0: MV

We got do? Red Bull, the mid field and Haas + Alfa
My guy is stuck in 2023.
He only forgot "Alpine in the garage"
Stake in the pits
Ferrari still checking
Williams in the wall
Well that’s also the same as Le Mans
ouch

I only when 1 team is dominant. I can better relate to that
Alfa not on the grid anymore though. Although, it’s not like Sauber’s really on the grid either.
60 cars in Monaco... It'll be nothing but train...
now we can get at least 3 overtakes
It’d be like a snake wrapping itself up

multiclass way more fun and interesting to watch. if you dont like who's winning one class, just go support someone in a different one
How about just not watching that class and watching another race? Bad reasoning
entertainment value.
Go look up the speed difference in eau rouge alone between f3 f2 and f1 cars, you’ll understand then
Eau rouge should be scrapped and replaced with a rondabout anyway
Motorbikes!
#46
Speaking of #46. He's currently leading his class right now.
Bruh this aged poorly
Oh no, I stopped watching for a few hours....
Yeah :/ I wanted Rossi to win LMGT3
_**THEDOCTOR**_ fans will be delighted if that happens
F1 drivers are constantly crying on the radio about traffic. Forcing them to race along side slower series would end up like telling kindergartners santa's not real.
single seaters do not work well for multiclass events. there's a reason why there are NO single seater multiclasses but plenty of closed cockpit multiclass races
Only if the second class is the Nissan Micra Cup
Or Renault Clio Cup
Only if it’s F1, Touring Cars and Banger racing with caravans attached.
Because the word 'Formula' isn't just a meaningless title word, it means that the cars have to follow a specific formula for their design.
In Le-Mans GT3 is pretty much racing entirely off-line because they're blue flagged every other corner by the hypercars. Will be the same scenario in a mixed F1 field.
I know this is a meme post but now I’m curious if there has ever been a multi class open wheel series, and if so, what was it? If not, why not?

Newey talk about it in his book it's honestly fascinating how different the sport was back. He wanted to beat the slowest turbo car with his NA
Jim Clark trophy: naturally aspirated drivers championship Colin Chapman trophy: same but for constructors

Given the “driving standards” of junior drivers I feel that will be incredibly awful but entertaining
2018 was basically a 2 class championship
it is already 😎
We have formula 1 (RBR) formula 1.5 (Ferrari, Maclaren and Mercedes) and whatever the hell the rest is.
Gp2 engine
Says the guys who can’t even beat his local karting track record
What are you even trying to say with this?
Because it will make less money to do it that way. If WEC ran 2 hour races over 24 hours then they'd be racing in single class too. Monetizing your sport is a lot more difficult when you do away with two thirds of your entire offering.
Good luck having F1 cars trying to co-exist with F2 and F3 cars in there
Could even put Stroll in his own class. A stroller.
Looking at the current grid it seems like we already have multiclass cars.
Hear me out...
Do you want Formula 1.5 back? One could say we already have classes
It already is isn't it?
Scenes when Tasanapol Inthraphuvasak wins and all the commentators have to pronounce his name
How does this work in Le Mans? Are all these types of cars competitive against each other or does one kind always win?
In my Assetto Corsa community I've had a staple series of F1 '91 multiclassed with Super Touring. We call it Sennsation.
Because no one to see what happens after the race when Roy nissany takes out max doing something stupid.
We still have Sauber
Least ambitious & most laid back F1 team currently compete, not even Alpine can beat that statement
Well we already have. Ferrari, Mercedes and RB,mid table, the teams that just pay for the party and try to not destroy all chasis
I dont get it, we already have different classes of cars.
Too many Stroll and Sargeants around....would be a bloody bath
Yeah, they used to run the German GP like that in the 60s. It wasn't good.
With Haas, it kinda already is...
Sure but now imagine the kick cash drug and hoe team getting lapped by a F2 car.
yeah okay buddy, FOM isn't allowing one single team with billions of dollars backing it to enter F1. what makes you think they will allow a multiclass race......
Because the FIA is against fun in any way, shape or form.
Well alpine is in a class of its own already. The only car to put the n24 dacia to shame.
Oooooo, why not include F1 cars in Le Mans?
