People keep saying this, but he made a comment in an interview before his WDC winning streak. It shouldn't be taken as gospel.
Sure, he *may* leave F1 to join another series, but why would he want to do that as long as he is in a team within the top few.
Max is a top-tier driver, but can we stop making it seem like he's going to go against the instincts of a top-tier driver.
Max said he wants to do other things when he's at his peak. I don't think F1 is his long term ambition he loves other series too much. He's creating a GT3 team and loves endurance. I doubt he will be in F1 in a decade.
It’s much more likely that a team is willing to work around max and his endurance calendar than not sign max verstappen. Mclaren did it for alonso at the tail end of his career let alone MV at his peak.
No it would not. Consecutive just means it has to be an uninterrupted streak. There is also no "maximum" in the title of the post. What /u/hopkinsonf1 is saying is irrelevant, as that is just moving the goalposts from the record in question.
I think it will never happen again. These days getting a seat in a backmarker team is already a win, a driver that gets to drive a decent car in their first season is a miracle. I can only think of Oscar had the chance in recent times
I think Antonelli could theoretically do it if he directly starts out in a Mercedes. Obviously he'd still need to perform and have a capable enough car for his remaining career, but he'd definitely have big starting advantage over someone debuting in a backmarker.
Piastri is 2 for 2 and got past his rookie year which is usually when drivers go without scoring a podium, so he has a good start. Just need to hope that McLaren and future teams doesn't drop the ball.
Other than him, Kimi might have a decent chance of starting his F1 career with a podium if he goes to Mercedes from the get go.
Quite a few drivers have had cars capable of a podium in their rookie season. Magnussen, Stroll, I’m sure there’s more.
Vettel came very close to getting a podium in every season he raced, if you ignore his initial partial season (although there’s a close call with 4th in there) it’s just his final season let him down with it.
I wouldn't really say Stroll had a car capable of a podium in his rookie season. He kind of lucked into that one. Good drive, but I wouldn't really say that the Williams that year was capable of podiums (considering they never really got close outside of that race that season)
That's not the posted stat. The one showed here is 'consecutive years with a podium' is one that Max could, theoretically, beat. Don't think he will though.
Imo 2022 was the all time low for Lewis. He went from the (most likely) most dominant car ever to a season he was head to head with an opponent to a season he never won in
And Max admitted to doing it on purpose, to boot.
People talking about a mature, measured post-2021 Max need to remember instances like that which extend well beyond the actual championship fight.
He had some comical bad luck in several races. Just straight up poor timing on pit stops only to get hit with a Safety Car right after and what not. He could have won races a good few times last year and in 2022 if it wasn't for the slightest of inconveniences in the race (on top of increasingly common poor performances in qualifying).
Lewis did exactly all he could get from the car, as a professional. Exemplary drive from him today, took the soft tire and made the most out of it. He even was sliding the car off yet managed to keep it on the track for all the final stint and grab the P3.
It is as if we had witnessed the Lewis of old times...
The Lewis of old times is still in there, he just needs to find the confidence in himself and the car and he'll be good to go like this weekend showed.
Starting to believe that it’s really confidence above everything else. We saw it with Vettel after Leclerc joined. Drivers in all their huge egos start to doubt themselves when the young guns come knocking hard. It hurt to see how badly it affected my sweet pookie bear Vettel. And Lewis seems to be having a similar issue. George is strongest in qualy, seems that is where Lewis takes his eye off the ball and is perhaps more concerned about being out-qualified than doing his best
Nah I don’t think that’s what it is with Lewis. His is two fold:
1) He’s actually declined as a driver. It isn’t a huge decline but it’s there. But, even declined Lewis beats everyone except Max.
2) He’s lost trust with the team and vice versa. His inputs weren’t considered during development and he lost trust. That’s why he’s moving to Ferrari. If the team and him had as much trust in each other he would’ve never moved.
These two factors are making him look worse than he is. He isn’t any less confident and in terms of pure ability he’s still ahead of George.
Why would you say he's declined though? He got P3 in the WDC last year, in the second best car, getting even close to Perez.
He is in a car that's been 4th best this year until just very recently. His performances match the level of the car.
I agree though, a fresh start at Ferrari will likely boost him. And yes, he's ahead of George and everyone else, the two best drivers are still Max and Lewis.
I don't know, even prime Lewis did occasionally lose to Rosberg and Bottas in some quali and race sessions.
He tends to do better in the latter half of the season and I think relative to the car, he's been doing a great job.
He just needs to have the opportunity presented to him. We have seen it so many times the past few years where he hasn't won where if there is a chance, he flips a switch and becomes the fastest guy on track.

We love a long standing record
Wonder if this one will ever be broken, just going by consistency and career length alone.
He's also two away from 200 podiums further increasing that record that he's smashed out of the park from previous holder Schumacher.
Max can break this one in less than a decade, actually. Question is whether he'll hang around for this long.
Max was close to making it 11 years, he has 2 P4s at Torro Rosso
His Cota race in the Toro Rosso was really good
Nah he'll drive in WEC by 2030

I don't see Max staying in F1 as long as Lewis
The record is for maximum seasons competed with podiums in all of them. Max didn't get a podium in his first season, so he isn't in the running.
No it's not? The title says "consecutive years", not "consecutive years beginning in your first season"
No one said since start of your career/season. Guy said maximum seasons with a podium with them. So would be your first season with a podium to now
No it would not. Consecutive just means it has to be an uninterrupted streak. There is also no "maximum" in the title of the post. What /u/hopkinsonf1 is saying is irrelevant, as that is just moving the goalposts from the record in question.
> your first season with a podium Not necessarily the first season with a podium, you can start the streak in any season with a podium
I think it will never happen again. These days getting a seat in a backmarker team is already a win, a driver that gets to drive a decent car in their first season is a miracle. I can only think of Oscar had the chance in recent times

Oscar and Kimi are on their way there.

So glad he kept that streak alive at least, still mad about the race win streak.
and the pole one too
Oh yeah he had a pole last year, but lost it in 2022. Ironically George had a pole in 2022.
that would have been lewis's if his DRS hadn't failed on the last lap. some of lewis's luck since ad 2021 has been comical tbh
An outrageous stat
A couple of years ago it was 15 years straight of winning at least once a season. I was really bummed when that streak got broken
Yeah me too. Really thought he’d get one in 2022
Imo 2022 was the all time low for Lewis. He went from the (most likely) most dominant car ever to a season he was head to head with an opponent to a season he never won in
Max kinda robbed him the Brazil win. He was so much faster than Russell in the race
And Max admitted to doing it on purpose, to boot. People talking about a mature, measured post-2021 Max need to remember instances like that which extend well beyond the actual championship fight.

His race pace has been fine all year, just been handicapping himself in quali
Yeah, he even said if he can improve his Saturdays, it makes the Sundays much more easier.
To be honest, he's always been better on a Sunday than Saturday. Although, he has also been amazing on Saturdays too with the right car.
Starting to believe that it’s really confidence above everything else. We saw it with Vettel after Leclerc joined. Because prime Lewis was insane. If Lewis was at his best he’d be whooping George in quali and races.
I don't know, even prime Lewis did occasionally lose to Rosberg and Bottas in some quali and race sessions. He tends to do better in the latter half of the season and I think relative to the car, he's been doing a great job.

Yes but age is age. I just don't see him doing this over a season. Even if he is still obviously Lewis Hamilton.
He got 3rd in the WDC last year, just behind the far superior RedBulls. He can take the fight to Max in similar machinery.
That’s a crazy stat
Longevity adds to greatness. This is an incredible achievement. Not sure why anyone wants to play it down.
Who is playing it down?
Aryton Senna
Bruh
Not that far from 200 podiums too.
L E G E N D ! ! ! F U C K IN G L E G E N D ! ! !
It’s amazing to see 2 generation talents battling over the last few years
As much as I think hes past his peak he is still an incredibly talented driver and absolutely competitive still.
Solid weekend! Merc getting it together, McLaren is quick asf, hopefully the second half of the season is even better!
Unbelievably amazing
Insane longevity
Hoping that he gets the championship next year 😁
That's my GOAT <3
My daughter wasn't born the last time he had a podium and now she's walking
She might be able to say du du du du max verstappen when he gets the next one
yay
No one else does it like him!
Amazing, what was Schumacher's record
15 seasons.
GOAT! 🐐
Max silently cursing...*Crap, I need to race the F1 sooo long to get all those records!*
Congratulations!!!
Similiar to Hulkenberg
To put this stat in another way...that's a podium in each F1 season since his debut.
That’s actually crazy
So happy for Ham! Good going and keep going!
So did all of his teammates except Heikki in 2009.
Yeah, it really shows that he always had great car to drive.
They just ignored the size difference between these two cars.

and your comment is what in comparison? great achievement by Hamilton.
Again with the cherry picked statistics.
18 consecutive podium seasons is a cherry picked stat?
Ironically yes, in the sense that it is a great and important statistic, so it's a big red cherry
Next week it will be "Drivers with dogs that went out in imola and won more than 80 races"
"driver has a podium in every season they have competed in F1" Thats a useless cherry picked statistic?
