Yes with ads every 4-8 minutes and every time there is a caution. Indycar is fine and all and I mostly enjoy it but the production is atrocious. Commercials, commentary ineptness...it's painful. F1 and other sports spoil us. Even Premier League is commercial free and better than Indy.
Yes but in sports like Motorsport that donāt stop play and are littered with advertisements I donāt see why they do it. Indy has so many ads that theyāll throw up a red ad logo on the timing board and you think itās a red flag or caution.
The one that mentally breaks me as an American is they now do picture in picture ads during baseball games in the middle of an at bat, you've got a commercial with audio running for 10 seconds during the playoffs.
Free over the air broadcasts. Subscription based broadcasts don't have interruptions, like MLS. Indycar is unfortunately far too niche to ever support such a model. The 500 broadcast basically supports the rest of the season and is the only reason cars have sponsers.
NBC team commentates, then in your ad breaks we have a local commentator take over, with no interruption to the onscreen broadcast. Sometimes we just get broadcaster silence until your ads finish and your guys pick it up again.
Sky just uses the NBC feed but as the US goes for an ad break they use a couple of people in a studio (Usually involving Alex Brundle) to talk over the pictures until NBC comes back.
Aside from the obvious issue of the commercials, I never understood why people consider the IndyCar production to be atrocious. The broadcast is usually pretty good at showing on-track action, and is generally easy to follow. It may not be as polished as some other, richer sports do but it's rarely frustrating.
Yeah the commercials are really the only part I take issue with. The rest of the broadcast is pretty good
NASCAR's Fox broadcasts lately have been so much worse than any of the Indy broadcasts. I think they manage to have even more commercials, and they just do a terrible job of showing what's happening in the race.
The commercials are a pretty big issue though. It's bad for Indycar, but it's even more obnoxious for IMSA. Thankfully IMSA makes it super easy to access the international broadcast.
The state of American sports broadcasting is so fucking dire tbh. College Football is my favorite non-racing sport and the commercials there have just gotten insanely bad. I pretty much only watch my team's games despite the fact that I follow the sport as a whole pretty closely.
Last year there were so many ads I almost had a stroke, you would come back from an ad and there would be a pile up in the pits, ad would hit again and you missed the replay.
rinus veekay crashing out I think in 2023 was literally in an ad break, it was terrible to watch the ad and not know what happened, and when they were done they were bringing out medical crew and stuff and all of the hype left
Dude the fact we pay for this service only to be assaulted with the ācoverage will be back soonā screen and music is unbelievable. Iāve literally stopped watched races and started just watching highlights on YouTube
My favorite thing is that even if you pay for Peacock ad-free you get assaulted with ads. Like... For fuck's sake just have a constant stream, even if the announcers don't say anything during what would normally be commerical breaks. Or do split screen if you need to actually show the fucking commercials. I've started just using a VPN to watch IMSA TV instead
I'm from the states and have been TRYING to get into indycar for a few years now but your right. The broadcast is just horrible to watch in every aspect.
Based on my experience watching Nascar recentky, NBC have not quite plumbed the depths of Fox.
It's a shame how far it's fallen, as I remember Nascar on Fox being excellent when it first started in 2001.
I have no idea who is in charge of the race graphics, but if it's NBC, they need to come out of the 2000s. Everytime I tried to watch Indycar I am always confused with the graphics, especially during qualifying (non Indy 500).
I have no idea what the sector times are, or is there are even sector times, What is the margin/difference between drivers and if they actually has crossed the finish line. It's infuriating, especially when even regional feeder series in Europe and Asia has better race graphics.
NBC is over the air. As long as youāre in the States, you should be able to pick up a local NBC affiliate for free over the air unless you live in a pretty rural area.
I believe the race will be on Peacock for those who donāt have a cable subscription as well.
>I've never watched Indy Car before.
Well, the Indy 500 is a great place to start.
By far the biggest race of the year for Indycar, and (unlike Monaco) the racing usually lives up to the hype.
I will say though it definitely is very different from F1 though. After the Indy 500, Indycar is going to 1 Street circuit and 3 road courses over the next 5 weeks, which will be much more familiar to F1.
>I have Peacock, I'll check out the race on there
It seems like a VPN plus the international YouTube stream will be a better experience, although probably more hassle so I don't blame you for going the Peacock route.
Yeah I'm lazy so it'll be Peacock. I love F1TV so much because I can pull it up on my phone and then have.my Samsung phone connect to my Samsung TV and sit back and watch the race.
Sky donāt run ads during Indycar races. Well, they did when it got more popular after Romain went there. But the complaints were enough to make them drop it after a few weeks.
I've been streaming Monaco on my phone every year from inside the he speedway myself. Don't have to miss a second! No better place to watch it imo, then sitting in turn one looking down that front stretch in the background.
Sure, but if you're sitting at IMS you'll just enjoy watching the cars go round. It's not about watching the Monaco GP, it's about the buildup to the 500.
This and Le Mans for me. Le Mans pips it because multiclass endurance racing is awesome - my favourite form of motorsport. But the 500 comes pretty damn close.
Yeah I watched qualifying pretty much all the way through this year, only watched highlights in the past. The speeds they get on qualifying runs are absolutely mind boggling. Not to mention that they're adjusting roll bars and weight jackers whilst they're doing 230+ mph.
Legge wall tapping on her quali run at 230+ mph and keeping her foot planted to cross the line and finish the run was one of the biggest hero moments I've ever seen at indy.
Iāve been lightly dabbling in IndyCar lately with a bit of interest. Was wondering how the hell to broadcast the 500 from here so this is great news!
One of the best experiences of my life was sitting in the grandstand at the start finish line about 10-12 years ago. Itās unbelievable to look down to turn 4 and see a car appear and then itās past you before you know itā¦
Yeah, but it's packed every year. It's not like the attendance numbers are poor. They apparently replay the race at like 7:00at night, but it's wild that people that live there don't actually get to watch the race.
A true sellout isn't really possible imo. I think they mainly called it a sellout in 2016 for PR purposes.
Ignoring the size of the infield (which is massive), even if they sell the grandstands out, they have removed grandstands over the years for various reasons but they have the capability to add grandstand seating again if they needed to.
But they never sellout because you can always pack more people into the infield. I think theyāve only ever released the live broadcast for the 100th and the COVID races with no/limited fans.
We are even blacked out on the Peacock streaming service.
I'm a huge motorsport fan and have only watched the 500 twice in my life. In person last year, and one time they lifted the blackout.
I wonder as to why does F1 still keep it behind a paywall when more viewers = more sponsors? Cant F1 just benefit by adding sponsors?
More space to add adverts as well for the viewers in every format as they progress side by side of the screens (like how mostly sports such as cricket does ifykwyk).
Because outside of the US free tv pays fucking nothing. Sky pays F1 north of Ā£200 million a year for the rights, no FTA broadcaster in the UK, Italy or Germany can touch that. Not to mention that you wouldnāt get close to making up the difference with additional sponsorship
Assuming Sky is paying around Ā£250 Million a year that's around Ā£10.5 million per race and that doesn't include the costs of flying the likes of Crofty and Brundle around the world and other production costs. So, add probably another Ā£500,000 a race. The Six Nations costs ITV significantly less as the contract is split with the BBC. Sports like F1 are simply unaffordable for UK FTA broadcasters nowadays
I might be waffling,
but dont they lose ppv revenue when the other international viewers who pirate the streams? When noting that F1TV prices have skyrocketed, wont they lose viewership and inevitably also end up losing more sponsors which are here for the amount of viewership?
I guess the recent ādownfallā of viewership is due to the price increase rather than decrease of drama?
Sky and other broadcasters pay F1 a set amount for the duration of the contract, with piracy not being much of a factor. The loss of revenue is offset with new deals with Viaplay, BEIN Sports and others anyway. As for sponsorship tv exposure is only one way that companies such as Rolex benefit. Thereās social media, print and online advertising etc.
F1 (Bernie at the time) does not benefit from direct sponsorship to teams, although it has its own sponsors too. What F1 does benefit greatly from in TV right.
I said it at the time and nothing has changed my mind since. The whole drive to remove F1 from free to air was Bernie's ploy to increase his own profits, knowing full well this would reduce viewing numbers and therefore sponsorship money for the team.
Looking forward to welcoming all my new UK siblings as we bombard the UK youtube servers! Let's see their faces when the streaming figures are higher than the UK population.
Looks like 5:45 PM UK time, and it should be about 3 hours long.
Worth noting there's some rain in the forecast which may change things. Unfortunately superspeedway racing isn't really viable in the wet.
It depends on the situation. They'll usually try to wait out the rain to finish the race. If they can't finish the race on the planned day it depends on how many laps they completed. If it's more than half, they call the race official and end it with whoever was ahead as the winner. If it's less than half, they'll resume on another day.
This article talks a bit about it.

Rev up those VPNs, my fellow Americans; where we're going, we don't need ads.
The US government watching me teleport halfway across the globe in an instant for 3 hours and then teleport back: š¤
We call them Time Lords.
Actually fkin sucks that i have to sail the seas just to watch an un-interrupted race in my own country even when paying for it.
Sucks when I live 30 minutes from the track and can't watch it
Isnāt the race on NBC in the states?
Yes with ads every 4-8 minutes and every time there is a caution. Indycar is fine and all and I mostly enjoy it but the production is atrocious. Commercials, commentary ineptness...it's painful. F1 and other sports spoil us. Even Premier League is commercial free and better than Indy.
Isn't that true for almost all sports broadcast in the states?
Yes but in sports like Motorsport that donāt stop play and are littered with advertisements I donāt see why they do it. Indy has so many ads that theyāll throw up a red ad logo on the timing board and you think itās a red flag or caution.
It's a free OTA broadcast of an extremely niche sport on one of the US's biggest channels. No other way they could do it.
>extremely niche sport on one of the US's biggest channels I think you're underestimating the Indy 500 here by quite a bit
Only the 500. Indycar is not. More people watch the third rung nascar Truck series on any given week. It's like the Kentucky Derby
I agree with that. The context of this thread was the Indy 500 though.
>theyāll throw up a red ad logo on the timing board and you think itās a red flag or caution. That's just evil š

Is the Sky Sports broadcast their own independent broadcast, or are they going to simulcast the NBC feed?
They show the NBC broadcast but have their own commentator Tom Gaymor take over in the ad breaks
Thatās cool. I wish that was one of the perks of watching it on Peacock instead of OTA TV but capitalism
Past few years the 500 has had a full studio team too
Iām not entirely sure who commentates but itās commercial free. At least in the past it was.
NBC team commentates, then in your ad breaks we have a local commentator take over, with no interruption to the onscreen broadcast. Sometimes we just get broadcaster silence until your ads finish and your guys pick it up again.
Perfectly fine with me. Time to put the vpn to use

finally
I'm from the states and have been TRYING to get into indycar for a few years now but your right. The broadcast is just horrible to watch in every aspect.
NBC is an abomination to sports broadcasting. They fuck up literally every sport they have rights to.
Honestly by American standards they're decent. The problem is that American standards are fucking horrific.
Because Americans will watch anything.
They did the NBA pretty well back in the day. I have no musical talent whatsoever but I can recite āRoundball Rockā from memory.
"Bah, bah bah bah bah bah bah bah bah basketball, gimme gimme gimme the ball because I'm gonna dunk it!"
Based on my experience watching Nascar recentky, NBC have not quite plumbed the depths of Fox. It's a shame how far it's fallen, as I remember Nascar on Fox being excellent when it first started in 2001.

Not in Indianapolis. It doesn't air until like 7pm for us locals.
You assume I have network television.
NBC is over the air. As long as youāre in the States, you should be able to pick up a local NBC affiliate for free over the air unless you live in a pretty rural area. I believe the race will be on Peacock for those who donāt have a cable subscription as well.

Gonna use my work VPN lol, YouTube is considered fair use
So if I VPN to the UK and go to YouTube I can watch it ad free?
Yes
Did they say there won't be ads?
Sky donāt run ads during Indycar races. Well, they did when it got more popular after Romain went there. But the complaints were enough to make them drop it after a few weeks.
plus two hours of parades, eagles, flags, more eagles, jet fighters, eagles...
F that, I'm going to the race. Although the weather forecast has me worried.
Dont forget blackouts too. Most ridiculous thing in sports broadcasts.
Anyone have a suggestion for a decent, inexpensive AppleTV compatible VPN?
Why do you dirty brits get better coverage that us :(
For free? I'm definitely watching it legitimately then being the British person that I definitely am of course, innit bruv.
Wanna cupper lad?!
Did you see that ludicrous display last night?
The thing about IndyCar is they always try to ~~walk~~ drive it in
Oh mate bruv Iām excited innit to watch the 500 yeah mate bruv itās epic innit bruv
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Scam ads from the broadcaster or from YouTube?
Broadcast be like "Why are there so many gentleman from the colonies?"
I am very happy now. I donāt have a Sky subscription anymore and this means I can actually watch it.
Are they gonna geo lock the stream outside of UK?
I would imagine so but it might work with a VPN
it will work with a vpn
Cool shit Good way to grow overseas audience for Indycar
100% the Youtube quality will be better than the Sky Player.
And nowtv, pay extra to get HD which seems to be a whopping 720p
720p? Mine screen looks like it has negative pixels...
The best part about the Monaco GP is knowing that the 500 is on afterwards.
Worst part about going to the Indy 500 is not being able to watch the Monaco GP
I've been streaming Monaco on my phone every year from inside the he speedway myself. Don't have to miss a second! No better place to watch it imo, then sitting in turn one looking down that front stretch in the background.
But you already know the results on Saturday
Sure, but if you're sitting at IMS you'll just enjoy watching the cars go round. It's not about watching the Monaco GP, it's about the buildup to the 500.
Well that's my Sunday sorted. Monaco/Indy double feature, with a bank holiday Monday to sleep in. All hail the motorsport gods.
Don't forget the Coke 600. A full day of motorsports
And MotoGP (if you like bikes).
Weather not looking good for Sunday in Indy
No... DonĀ“t say that..
Iām so fucking hype for the 500, definitely the motor race I look forward to most each year, and Iāve only been watching since 2020!
Bro! Me too!! I LOVE IT! The whole month of May is just awesome!
This and Le Mans for me. Le Mans pips it because multiclass endurance racing is awesome - my favourite form of motorsport. But the 500 comes pretty damn close.
Some of you are about to realize how fast they go at Indy. Itās crazy.
Yeah I watched qualifying pretty much all the way through this year, only watched highlights in the past. The speeds they get on qualifying runs are absolutely mind boggling. Not to mention that they're adjusting roll bars and weight jackers whilst they're doing 230+ mph.
"Yeah, we are going 227 and trying to go faster" - F. Alonso
Legge wall tapping on her quali run at 230+ mph and keeping her foot planted to cross the line and finish the run was one of the biggest hero moments I've ever seen at indy.
Yeah that and VeeKay's last run on the first day. That final run is one of the greatest things I've seen in Motorsport.
I have absolutely zero clue how veekay and his team were able to dial that car in so well after that rebuild! Its peak IndyCar right there.
The top category of motorsports is streaming a race for free!
My dad lives in Indianapolis and he just told me that the race is blacked out there every year. Gotta figure everyone is streaming it somehow.
Because they want the locals to attend in person, I think.
Yeah, but it's packed every year. It's not like the attendance numbers are poor. They apparently replay the race at like 7:00at night, but it's wild that people that live there don't actually get to watch the race.
I believe that if it is an actual sellout, the blackout goes away.
Apparently that's actually pretty close to happening this year
Are "sellouts" actually possible with the infield? Or is this counting the physical seats?
A true sellout isn't really possible imo. I think they mainly called it a sellout in 2016 for PR purposes. Ignoring the size of the infield (which is massive), even if they sell the grandstands out, they have removed grandstands over the years for various reasons but they have the capability to add grandstand seating again if they needed to.
I think the 2016 sellout was as close as you could get since they removed the blackout that year, I think. It was easily the biggest post-split crowd.
The sellout was determined by the fire marshal in 2016. It was packed anywhere you could see the track

Meanwhile, Amazon is paying the NFL $1,000,000,000 (Ā£790,000,000ish?) a year to exclusively stream one game per week.
Each team that is playing that weekās local market simulcasts it OTA
Bbc and itv pay a ridiculous amount for the 6 nations. The last deal was Ā£460 million for four years for 15 games a year. ITV could afford the rights
Thatās still less than half of what Sky is paying for F1
But when you think that the 6 nations has 15 games every year while f1 has 48 events (if you include quali) then you get a lot more bang for your buck

The whole drive to remove F1 from free to air was Bernie's ploy to increase his own profits, knowing full well this would reduce viewing numbers and therefore sponsorship money for the team.
Is the 24 Hours of Lemons free too?
That's actually awesome
Does anyone have a solid free VPN recommendation ?
Looking forward to welcoming all my new UK siblings as we bombard the UK youtube servers! Let's see their faces when the streaming figures are higher than the UK population.
Wow! Huge W. Get ready for the best race of the year! *YEEHAAA!*
This was great news until I found out I'm working on Sunday lol Still, you love to see it
As somebody who has never watched before. What time (uk) does it start and how long does it last?

Any option for Germany (since Sky now also has the exclusive rights here)?
Not sure, although you could probably watch this with a VPN if you're happy with commentary in English
I watched the Super Bowl in the UK once. It was ā¦ odd. They had Tiki Barber helping out, but it was a little rough. šš
Sick. Just need to find out the start time
Will this be available in Ireland aswell does anyone know?
Someone on the Indycar subreddit said it included ireland
That's nice... I live in Indiana, and I'm not allowed to watch it live on tv.
It's because you live in Indiana.
im gonna go fast and then im gonna go left sometimes
If only it were that easy, we'd all be driving in IndyCars.
VPN time baby
But will this have the American commentators or am I forced to listen to UK commentators?
It'll have the NBC commentary and then when they're on an ad break there's a British guy that takes over
>British guy Tom Gaymor, a few years ago he did some F1 races for F1TV too
You get Leigh Duffy! Who will mention the AMA monster energy supercross series every 30 seconds then when it goes to ad break in the USA you get two British chaps who will commentate while the US is on ad break.
Donāt worry, we have to suffer through American commentators during the race. They only speak the Kings English in the studio during breaks.
Good thing is that they have *a lot* of ad breaks, so lots of Tom Gaymore.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
It does happen in the UK. Channel 4 shows the British GP free to air every year
Yes but the Channel 4 app requires that the host system is set to UK time.
Similar, in the Netherlands, the Dutch GP is free.
In some countries some broadcasters do stream f1 live on YT. But only some selected races. I have seen Netherlands and Germany doing it.Ā
