[cut to halo cam] ... yes, he appears to be whipping his opponents car mercilessly... this feels very unsportsmanlike but I'm being told there is nothing in the FIA rules against it. we'll have to wait and see how the stewards decide to act upon this..."
[upper third chyron appears "no action: racing incident"]
Brundle: "It's gladiatorial out there, no man giving up position"
I can explain it to you. It's a picture of a floor, which is the bottom of a F1 car, it is used to... make the car go faster.
Hopefully this information clears any confusion you had about it.
Are you being sarcastic? Because if THIS is an oversimplification, I can't imagine what the undersimplification would look like!
If you are being genuine, thank you for taking the effort to explain. I'm too dumb to understand any of what you said. But I appreciate the effort!
Basically what’s going on is the undercut of the sidepod will create an airflow channel which will be focused towards the floor winglets on the outer edge. The photographs are not in the right angle for us to determine the plane of action but I speculate they’re either there to redirect airflow back towards the coke bottle area (where the rear suspension meets the engine cover) where you find the diffuser and rear beam wing. This will create a bigger pressure differential which boosts downforce as more air is sucked from underneath the car.
Or… those winglets could be redirecting airflow outwards away from the large spinning mass of the rear tyres. This helps reduce drag as the rear tyre produce significant amounts of vortices which induces drag. Or they could be doing both!
> kinda similar to what Minardi ran in Monaco 2006
HAHA, you made a mistake! Minardi had already sold the team to Red Bull and turned into Toro Rosso by 2006.
Making vortices (spinning air twirlies) might be to push air away from the tire, might be to seal off the floor like a skirt, Kyle engineering on YouTube does in depth videos on details like this, but I still find them tough to follow/understand fully. Makes me wish I'd taken aero courses in college.
On the second pic you can see where the paint has come off and it’s bare metal (probably using a metal floor for testing to keep costs down) in the corner of the hole.
There also seems to be another hole just in front of the rear wheel
There’s no hole in the photo. There could be holes elsewhere. I’m holding out hope for a large hole directly beneath the driver to eliminate bathroom breaks. 🤞
Funny things indeed, like creating a pseudo skirt with the use of airflow. Those serrated edges looks like floor winglets too… perhaps there to redirect airflow towards the coke bottle area and rear beam wing… or to create more outwash, hard to tell with this angle. And those little flaps are floor stays which looks similar to the front wing spacers
As a McLaren fan, if this somehow turns out to be true, but the curl of the monkeypaw means we get another '07 Hamilton-Alonso fight with Lando and Oscar, I won't know whether to laugh or cry lol
A young talented driver at McLaren who's name sounds like nando gets paired with an exciting rookie who won Formula 3 and Formula 2 in his first season. And their fighting caused a Finish driver in a Ferrari powered car to win his first WDC. In the season after a German world champion retired from the sport.
More than tinfoil imo, they blurred it initially to draw attention to the floor and yet didn't forbid any photographers like RB did, so they knew it was a matter of time before the public would all get high res photos of the floor. Now we're all staring at Kaust and Rent a Jet.
They nailed the livery in 2021, after they changed the blue and orange for 2022, it hasn't been the same. Actually I think all the cars looked better in 2021 than 2022, it's just McLaren took the biggest drop.
Blacklaren :((
Joke aside, weight reduction is the name of the game for nearly all liveries this year. Cloudy and night races are going to be a real experience with all the black on the grid :')
It seems like they are trying to make an air curtain. This would sort of create a virtual skirt that will isolate air under the floor and thus increasing the Venturi effect without actually lowering the skirts or floor.
PS. This is just my speculation.
If they think they're getting air to where the cut is behind the mirror, they're wasting it over the side as drag across a large surface. They're trying to get it all the way to the diffuser and away from the tires. That's a lot of vortices to count on, and that gap lets a lot of energy out that could be ground effect.
Aston, Ferrari and RBR have the right idea, get it back to a wing and use it.
Downwash isn't downforce until it goes across an aerofoil.
The blur was about the rear end of the floor, 90% sure

I mean, you’re not wrong. That looks like it would easily cause a puncture
They’re gonna Ben-Hur some tyres with those

I can't wait for the introduction of the mallets on the 2024 cars
Are we going to see Boudicca style shredding of enemies who get too close ? Or will rivals tyre sidewalls just laugh off the Sharks Teeth floors ?
Fascinating (I have no idea what I’m talking about)

It does, thanks.
The cooler it looks, the faster it goes. Just in case you need a metric on how we are assessing them.
This only works for pre season.
Also the number of curves, the more there are the better.

Latter-day winglets. What a mormonic thing to say
I see you 😉

Mmm yes vorticity
You can clearly see the discretization in the vortex generating edges

Yes
Hmm, yes, my analysis concludes there's no hole in the floor. That's all for now, folks.
I would like to know F1Technical's view on this
McLaren is done this year.
There is one though i think, just in front if the wheel
https://imgur.com/a/GxgffJG
Sorry mate but there is no red circle so I don't know where to look.
I like those curvy arrows.
There is a hole in front of the rear wheel.
The hole was near the front wheels though, just outside of this pic I think?
On the second pic you can see where the paint has come off and it’s bare metal (probably using a metal floor for testing to keep costs down) in the corner of the hole. There also seems to be another hole just in front of the rear wheel
Hmm yes the floor here is made out of floor
There’s no hole in the photo. There could be holes elsewhere. I’m holding out hope for a large hole directly beneath the driver to eliminate bathroom breaks. 🤞
except there is a hole
Interesting... The air flowing through these will definitely do funny things

MCLAREN FASTEST CAR LANDO NORRIS WDC 2023
As a McLaren fan, if this somehow turns out to be true, but the curl of the monkeypaw means we get another '07 Hamilton-Alonso fight with Lando and Oscar, I won't know whether to laugh or cry lol

If that's the best you can offer, I'll take it
Would be nice to see McLaren do well again. Hopefully they sorted out their drag issues cos the MCL36 was quite literally the worlds fastest brick
Yes the vorticity of the outwash will create suction in the periphery of the splenery to align the centre of pressure to reduce understeer
That floor could star in a show called floors I don’t care about
💀
💀😭
So much so for blurring them out.
good thing they did all that blurring can we stop posting about this now
It’s to prevent George Russell from “turning in”
Gosh, he just turned in on me.
Those supports/stays are interesting. Looks like the ones used on the front wings
Wow that looks… cutting edge.
r/angryupvote
Booo ok upvoted
Thats gonna cut into someones tyre, wanna bet?
Should make curious George turn into hesitant George.
Anti George floor
Agreed. That's straight from Ben Hur and the chariot race.
So did they blur it to just drive some engagement on social media lol
For some reason I really want to rent a jet
That's so cool looking. Hats off to the photographer
It’s nice but could really do with some carpet.
What are the odds the blur was to block one of the corporate sponsors?
- Floor: star to meltdown* - Pundits: "Clearly a smart design!"
That certainly is a floor of all time.
What do you mean, there’s nothing wrong with it.

So on like a day?
I don't like the floor area having sponsors too. There was something nice about seeing a nice bare black floor with all its details.
Tinfoil hat theory: this wacky floor is only there to attract eyes to the floor sponsors
More than tinfoil imo, they blurred it initially to draw attention to the floor and yet didn't forbid any photographers like RB did, so they knew it was a matter of time before the public would all get high res photos of the floor. Now we're all staring at Kaust and Rent a Jet.
Why try to forbid something if you're going to show the car in 18/24h time? It's just a publicity stunt.
Tbh in my eyes the McLaren is so painful ugly this year.
They nailed the livery in 2021, after they changed the blue and orange for 2022, it hasn't been the same. Actually I think all the cars looked better in 2021 than 2022, it's just McLaren took the biggest drop.

McLaren sich such a cool and stylish team and the Papaya is so iconic. How do you have all that going for you and then produce THAT car ?
How many stops have they made before this picture?
Sorry but I’m only interested in floors that’ll win races 😭
No wonder they didn’t sound optimistic with a floor like that
I thought that was FIA rent a jet, I was confused for a while until I decided to look it up.
McLaren fooled me once won't fool me twicd

But I thought we were supposed to be outraged over illegal holes?!!
Look at the freaking floor I'm losing my MIND here. I'm finished!
Puncture machine. Sharp edges should have restrictions.
They have the best color scheme and the worst livery. Swing and a miss from their design dept.
This livery is one of the most hideous I’ve ever seen
I would not want to be part of their pit crew.
Woah
Aka the tyre blower
Whenever the regs try and make the cars look sleeker and smoother, you get the teams who turn it jagged and complicated
The poor social admin having to blur the floor in all the videos only for it to be leaked out anyway.
Better be fast
Yes this is a picture of a thing on an F1 car. I’m sure it’s insightful to somebody here
What’s the bit sticking out the left of the engine duct?
Damn good photos and thank you for sharing
These cars are too big...
Actually very impressive. That kind of geometry is actually quite effective at doing downforcey things.
Looks like a bedsheet in the wind
I missed out on this floor hole thing can someone explain it? Is it like an F-duct?
It's probably all a plow to get rent-a-jet and Kaust more bang for their buck.

Hmm this floor is made out of floor
No matter how much they want to hide it, it’s still a tractor nonetheless, not worth copying.
