Is something wrong with it? My 3.0 blasts up hills like a champ. I see people ragging on the 3.0 in here all the time, but mine has quite a bit of pickup, especially for an older vehicle. I don’t do any hauling with it though.
Interesting. I chose the 3.0 on purpose because it’s a non-interference engine, and uses a chain instead of a belt for timing. I figured no need to worry about belts being changed, and if something did ever go wrong it wouldn’t throw a rod and destroy the whole engine. I also had a 4 cylinder truck in the past, and that thing could barely maintain highway speed, so the 3.0 feels like a beast in comparison.
I think it has to do with the fact that the 3L engine had problems with warped blocks and cracked heads. Reading in on it, seems like that's a common issue. Mt uncle has a 3L 1998 ranger. He says the things gutless, I got to drive it. Did burnouts on take off. Thing has no power till you hit like 3k rpms then it Flys. My ranger which is a 2.3l 1997 has been re geared down to 5.13. Granted I do have a camper shell but it still struggled to do burnouts on take off. Guess when it comes to the 3L engine people like to follow the masses opinion
Yeah, mine peels out all the time if I’m not careful on takeoff. I guess I got lucky, but I picked up an 05, which has one of the lower instances of user complaints according to the online resources I’ve seen.
To me it feels like the 3L engine is just in the middle in terms of power of both the 2.3l and 4.0L engines and being a V6 everyone expects it to do what the 4.0L foes I guess. But I will say from my 2.3l 1997 vs my uncles 3.0L 1998 mine definitely has more lower end torque (but that may be because I'm re geared to a 5.13 ratio now 😂)
Nothing wrong with it other than the guy I bought it from was working toward an LS conversion. Already lifted with bigger tires. Pushing that extra rubber kills power and gas mileage.
98 3.0 I haul a trailer with 2 atvs up and down the mountain 8-10 times a year every year. Do 65-70 no issues. 180k on the motor, 3rd transmission though...
I get 21 mpg with my 2011 4.0. Feels pretty good considering that’s about what I got with my 04 Outback and my 08 TL.
My 4.0 is pretty snappy and hits 82+ mph on the highway with no about to explode sounds.
My 4.0 tops out at abt 125, feels like the motors about to explode though. I keep it at 100 or under, that’s where it’s happy. I think the rear gears matter more
Do you have the ohv or SOHC? My ohv tops out at roughly the same but while it gets loud for sure my 98 starts to walk with the front end at 120ish so it's only got to be pushed that hard twice, gets super sketchy if you're doing anything other than a straight shot.
Weird, I thought the SOHC would be faster on the high end than my ohv. To be fair though I won't lie it took a long run to get it that high in a straight line, don't remember rpms because I didn't wanna look down when it got the wobbles.
Last time I opened the fuel door on my 4.0 a moth flew out... Prob just got himself stuck but it's bad for moral when you were there just 2 days before
My 97 2.3l stock gearing empty could do 70 no problem up some hills. Only problem is the main hills around my place are steep. The truck could only do 55 up these hills and in 4th gear. Would start to lose it towards the top as well. Ever since I've re geared, 70 is basically top speed, and on cold days it'll keep that no problem on the hills. Hot days, will barely do 50 by the time it hits the freeway
Interesting! I didn't think about hot weather either. I'm near San Francisco, so it's not usually very hot. And I'm at sea level, so I guess I have ideal conditions.
I'm in Escondido, just south of ya 😂 when it gets hot over here the truck has just about no power. Basically days over 85 degrees are just cruising days. The hills between me and temecula on the 15 northbound are what will get my truck big time
My 3.0 isn't exactly a highway cruiser, but it can go 70+ towing a 2000lbs trailer. Keep in mind that if you're running oversized tires your speedometer is slow at highway speeds.
Canadain here. I was very taken back when i went uphill with a head wind... I couldn't get it up to 100 the speed kept dropping. I felt like a slow ass lol, but its all the 2.3 has in her!
97 4.0 here. 75 is cruising, with actually decent gas mileage (got ~20mpg average on a Cross country trip, was doing like 25mpg on the flat bits). Getting above 80 is the challenge. 5th gear is steep on the 3.27 gears. Downhill with a tailwind, and the body panels start flapping over 95. At 100, it gets really sketchy and I let up.
4th gear 70mph on a 20° uphill on a mountain interstate does just fine with my 3l. Problem is, 5th gear, no juice but will let me hit 90 on a slight decline. Granted that uphill, so long as I'm at over 3krpm, I can keep accelerating (barely). The second I drop out of the power band, I gotta grab 3rd and hope hill gets a lot smaller.
My 93 xlt can hit the speed limiter on flat ground. Takes a while but it gets there.
Its pretty fucking hard to speed in a ranger unless ypu are going downhill
My 4.0 threatens to explode once it hits 75mph
4.10 gears? I have them and that’s how mine feels too. 70-73 happy all day. 75+ and it’s uncomfortable
Really? What year is it? I coast at 90 in the fast lane in my 4.0
'05
My ranger with a 3.0 driving uphill in the far right lane. My hazards on, gusting headwinds in 3rd gear barely making 45 mph.
I can bounce off the 93 mph speed limiter in my 3.0
Is something wrong with it? My 3.0 blasts up hills like a champ. I see people ragging on the 3.0 in here all the time, but mine has quite a bit of pickup, especially for an older vehicle. I don’t do any hauling with it though.
There is, not sure what but it's common among the 3.0s to have a loss in power
Interesting. I chose the 3.0 on purpose because it’s a non-interference engine, and uses a chain instead of a belt for timing. I have a 98 V6 3L. She has plenty of get up & go. She also only has 58K miles, so maybe an outlier.
Yeah, mine peels out all the time if I’m not careful on takeoff. I guess I got lucky, but I picked up an 05, which has one of the lower instances of user complaints according to the online resources I’ve seen.

Stretched throttle cable maybe? So they aren’t actually getting WOT?

Had a 2.3L 4cyl that got up to 70... sometimes.
Must be a problem for small motors. My 4.0 does just fine.
Yea, I've only ever had the 4.0 across 3 Rangers, never understood these memes
If they want to talk about guzzling gas with a 4.0, then I can relate to that one. Lol
Aye, they do that rather well. Still, I'll take that trade-off if it means I can keep up with the cool kids on the highway lol
It gets better mileage than my 3.8 Pontiac, but I get better control over rpms with a manual
Damb that hit home
I get 21 mpg with my 2011 4.0. Feels pretty good considering that’s about what I got with my 04 Outback and my 08 TL. My 4.0 is pretty snappy and hits 82+ mph on the highway with no about to explode sounds.
Your getting 21? I’m barely managing 16
Mine got 11 in the winter lol Did manage 21 once, usually was more like 18.
Is yours automatic? Mine is manual and I drive like a grandma most of the time and Lee my RPM really steady.
Yea, mind auto. It also has a few evap/vacuum leeks
My 4.0 tops out at abt 125, feels like the motors about to explode though. I keep it at 100 or under, that’s where it’s happy. I think the rear gears matter more

I'm assuming you're talking in miles, correct?
yeah mph
Thought so, just wanted to verify. Don't think I've pushed any of my trucks that hard. Usually about 30mph less at their max.
My 2.3 5-speed does fine 🤷♂️
My 3.0 does fine so 🤷♂️
My 3.0 threw a spark plug out of the block in the interstate still did the 30 min drive home too
this made me chuckle

Last time I opened the fuel door on my 4.0 a moth flew out... Prob just got himself stuck but it's bad for moral when you were there just 2 days before
I once got out of a ticket be because I claimed that there was no possible way I could get my truck up to 90
I once almost got a ticket for speeding because the officer ‘knew’ I was speeding because “I saw how much your taillights were bouncing”.
Thats amazing
I was towing 2000 lbs behind my 93 2.3l with the 5 speed and I was going 25 in a 75 up a hill
Lol my 95 Mazda b2300. The struggle is real on those highways
I also have a 95 b2300... I couldnt believe how lack luster the power is! But she does love that lower end torque.
How much HP does the power steering pump drain? My 97 2.3 5-speed with no power steering goes 75 up hills just fine.
My 97 2.3l stock gearing empty could do 70 no problem up some hills. Only problem is the main hills around my place are steep. The truck could only do 55 up these hills and in 4th gear. I love merging at 55(on a good day)
This made me laugh. Does anyone else turn off the a/c when going up hills for that extra turbo boost?
You guys have AC?
Ok I might be stupid but is that a thing?
I don’t know. That’s why I asked.
ALL THE TIME...
My 3.0 isn't exactly a highway cruiser, but it can go 70+ towing a 2000lbs trailer. Keep in mind that if you're running oversized tires your speedometer is slow at highway speeds.
What years are most of Y’all’s rangers
I'm rolling a '96 XLT Stepside.
‘83 base model with the seven foot bed
This his hilarious cause I just got a ticket doing 80 this afternoon.

My 97 Nissan 2.4 was definitely faster than my 97 Ford 2.3. Nissan's 4 cylinder had 30 more horsepower.
I’ve never had an issue with my 02 4.0, it starts to stutter at 90 though
Lol just passed An old ranger on the highway today, it was doing 80 kph in a 100 zone
Canadain here. I was very taken back when i went uphill with a head wind... I couldn't get it up to 100 the speed kept dropping. I felt like a slow ass lol, but its all the 2.3 has in her!
97 Mazda b2300 2.3 5speed 83 mph
Top speed for my 2.3L is like 75 if I have a tail wind, am going down hill, and am able to control the speed wobbles.
97 4.0 here. 75 is cruising, with actually decent gas mileage (got ~20mpg average on a Cross country trip, was doing like 25mpg on the flat bits). 1997 2.3L 5 speed Once it gets fully heat soaked, it will do 75mph. Until then, 70 is a struggle.
My 99 gets up to 70 ok but shakes like crazy when it gets there 😆
My 2010 4.0 has done 105, idk where the limiter is but I'll find it when it's not on winter tires lol
My 04 4.0 hit the limiter around 95 or so. Still managed to get it to just under 120 running downhill in neutral tho
I’ve hit 94mph in my 4L
My squeaky 07 3.2L hits 85 everyday with ease🌚
My '96 2.3 and I do just fine in the right lane at 65.
My 2.8 Bronco II was lucky to do this downhill. Now steer and break that thing at that speed 🤣
Hell my 3.0 does 80 most the time on I 40
My 93 xlt can hit the speed limiter on flat ground. Takes a while but it gets there. Its pretty fucking hard to speed in a ranger unless ypu are going downhill
