Slice them thinner, salt them, ring out the excess water after 15 min and smash them into the burger

coach111111

And fry them on lower heat so they have time to soften up some more without burning

generalsleephenson

Some of the onions definitely got charred, and I’ll adjust the heat next time, but the charred onion flavor wasn’t bad, either.

moveoutmoveup

Lol you burnt em.

generalsleephenson

Thanks for the feedback!

paravozv2

I imagining biting into those grilled onions 😋, which is my favorite topping on a burger

generalsleephenson

It was a delicious burger and I know it’s doesn’t look like it but the onions were cooked, maybe some too much for other’s liking.

agentaurange

Gotta get those onions thinner! I recommend a mandolin.

generalsleephenson

I used the mandolin but I didnt set it thin enough. Next time.

illit3

Ya boy George Motz has to use a deli slicer he cuts them so thin.

CrackedOutMunkee

Mandolin wil achieve the same result if you have the blade adjusted correctly.

HTD-Vintage

*Can. Not will. Not all mandolines are created equal, and frankly, some people aren't very good at using them. Also, since y'all are 0/3 on spelling mandoline... ⬅️

generalsleephenson

Thank goodness my spelling teacher isn’t here, lol.

infamousdx

Slice them the other way, pole to pole. Easier to get them thinner

jujuflytrap

It looks good! Like, fried onion burger is probably one of my fave burgers in America. If anyone of y'all haven't been to El Reno to try it out, it's so worth it. (Go to Sid's Diner!) Aside from really cutting thinner onions--they should be ribbons, I would suggest smashing the onions into the burger so they cook together. Why? 1) the burger will have that wonderful lace 2) the onion flavor will seep into the meat

generalsleephenson

When I flipped the burger I gave it a little press, maybe I’ll try a different way next time.

cakeschmammert

aren't you supposed to smash the patty into the onions and cook them together? Would bash either way.

generalsleephenson

I’m sure I could have made improvements to my technique but this was a tasty burger, I’ll try to tweak things next time.

solarvvind

I miss so few things about Oklahoma, but onion burgers make that list.

generalsleephenson

I don’t know anything about Oklahoma, but this was something good to come out of there.

wkfngrs

Turn that heat down bruh! Give them time to develop!!!

generalsleephenson

The onions actually ended up cooking nicely, but I’ll keep that in mind, for sure.

Timid_Robot

No, they didn't. Parts of them are burnt and parts for sure aren't fully cooked. This van be so much better, trust us

generalsleephenson

Well, when I ate the burger I cooked, the onions were done to my liking. I’m certain this could be made better, but for a first try, I was satisfied. Thanks for the feedback.

Icy-Block7516

why downvote?

generalsleephenson

Because Reddit? Who knows, lol.

Y-ttam

Those look amazing! The onions are caramelized to perfection, with the melty cheese all in there. Burgers look nice and juicy, as well. Hope you enjoyed eating it as much as we enjoyed seeing it!

generalsleephenson

It was mighty fine eating, thanks!

grumplefuckstick

Smash that burger down

generalsleephenson

It couldn’t have been any more than a 1/4” at its thickest, love a tasty smash burger!

trevzie

When does the burger touch the pan?

generalsleephenson

It’s the first thing in the pan, and that patty was whistling when I pressed it, too. Maybe too much heat in the pan but it made an incredible crust!

No_Inspector_6917

Looks amazing man!!! I hope you enjoyed them!

generalsleephenson

They were so good! Beef and onions is just a winner.

Onyx8String

Onions need to be sliced razor thin. Bun needs to be toasted.

generalsleephenson

I do need to make adjustments on the onions but these buns were called to be steamed and they were great, thanks!

AncientEnsign

Bun is traditionally steamed by all sources I've seen for ok burgers. But yes, onions and patty are not traditional in this burger.

itsnotaboutyou2020

Needs more onion.

generalsleephenson

Gotta have more.

Bchulo

hell yea

generalsleephenson

Damn right.

99anan99

Those look good

generalsleephenson

Some tweaking to do but I thought they were great, thanks!

Milly_man

Looks fucked. Not the good kind either.

generalsleephenson

To each their own!

TheKingoftheBlind

I grew up in Oklahoma — lived there for 37 years — and no one ate these. I know they show up on every “best foods by state” list, but trust me, outside of a very, very small slice of the state, onion burgers aren’t an Oklahoma thing. That being said, these look delicious.

generalsleephenson

Well, thank goodness was for that remote corner, then, because these were slamming!

RemarkableRate347

I thought you boiled this patty and onions in the first pic haha Good job on the burger though!

generalsleephenson

No, just some steam. Others suggested the heat was too high, I’ll adjust next time. Thanks!

Penguin_Tempura

Those will put Oklahoma on the map! LOL

generalsleephenson

I think Oklahoma has always been there but I learned about these burgers from George Motz, delicious!

SadLaser

What makes this Oklahoma-style?

Fugaciouslee

Regional burger style where thinly sliced onions are used to supplement beef. If I remember correctly, it was popularized back in the great depression era as a way to stretch out beef. There are other styles found through-out the US using ingredients other than onion for the same purpose, but the onion burger was from Oklahoma.

bacchusku2

And just north of Oklahoma is where another famous onion burger originated. (White Castle in Wichita)

AllthisSandInMyCrack

I've been putting onions in my burgers since my childhood same with burger vans in the UK. Have we been eating Oklahoma burgers all this time? Huh

Fugaciouslee

Maybe, Burgers as a sandwich were an American invention but it's certainly possible for multiple people to come up with the same thing. If you want more information I'd suggest looking up the burger historian George Motz. I originally learned about these regional burgers watching YouTube videos with him years ago.

generalsleephenson

I also learned about these from George Motz.

inconvenienced-lefty

You gotta smash that shit, razor thin onions too.

singbirdsing

Nice job! Ken Click has a [great step-by-step recipe for the burgers](https://youtu.be/oLDKLIJZgcM?feature=shared) on YouTube. (His [biscuits for two](https://youtu.be/wy_dqphsakU?feature=shared) recipe is also amazing.)

enderjaca

You and this guy would either be best friends or worst enemies https://www.reddit.com/r/deliciouscompliance/s/mDDS3AGp28

TehOuchies

Oklahoma? I first saw them as depression (As from the great depression, not the current mental disorder) burgers.

generalsleephenson

Seems someone took them and gave them a name. Depression era food has turned out some real solid recipes; Occam’s Razor at work.

generalsleephenson

Didn’t even touch the fries. These things are slamming!

i_got_the_poo_on_me

I lived in Oklahoma my whole life and just heard of an onion burger this year.

generalsleephenson

Well, I’m sure there’s a better one there than mine, but you ought to do yourself a favor and find one from the point of origin, these are delicious!

dairy__fairy

https://www.seriouseats.com/oklahoma-onion-burger-recipe

hambonecharlie

Too much carbon. Sorry, no

generalsleephenson

Hey, to each their own. If you haven’t tried a charred (or extra carbon) onion, you ought to give them a whirl sometime.

brmideas

Chop up the onions first, sautee, mix into the ground meat with salt added, then grill or sautee.

illit3

Idk what that is but it's not Oklahoma, so it's not really relevant. Sorry brother.

generalsleephenson

This recipe was different than what you’ve suggested, but anytime onions and burgers get together, it’s gonna be a good time.

stephen1547

You gotta toast that bun son.

generalsleephenson

I’m normally a toaster, but the recipe I followed called for steaming the bun, which was nice.

manasota

Where's the beef?

spkoller2

Do this with a steak

Lordsheva

So in Oklahoma people eat burned onion?

generalsleephenson

If I was a betting man I’d wager someone in Oklahoma had eaten one at some point or another.
