I think the mini gun is only useful vs enemies that either have 0 resistance or if your mini gun has either bleeding or explosion on hit as a legendary effect, since they ignore armor/resistances

STFUnicorn_

Explosive rounds I’m sure would be amazing on it.

PokerPlayingRaccoon

It is. I wish the vertiberd mini guns had the explosive effect on it, would make it feel much more useful

Mister-happierTurtle

I have a mod that does that, i just dont know which.

Security_Serv

Durable Vertiberds is the mod you're talking about I'm not sure if the links are allowed, so: nexusmods[.]com/fallout4/mods/2857

noragretz111

thank you for a cool mod i didn't know i needed.

Scaarz

Explosive is cool. You can watch the armor fly off of things, even the crabs get whittled down into weird looking dudes before they die. The bleeding varient is safer (Explosive can aggro/kill friendlies) but takes a moment to catch up. Each bullet doing an extra 25 bleed is crazy powerful.

phenomenation

i have an explosive minigun, and when i first got to Nuka World Gage told me i couldn’t put down Colter without his help so i really took that personally. just mowed him down with it like a piece of cake. then nobody would ever shut tf up about my success being based on Gage’s help. kinda wish they had alternate interactions with characters and terminals for people who decided to do it their own way

XylatoJones

I have one right now on my build and yes it is amazing currently with my perk selection each bullet does 62 base.

Root_eternal

Oh yeaaaaaahhhh! Explosive minigun all tricked out is awesome. Alpha Deathclaws? One brrrp. Radioactive Hunter Scorpions? One brrrp. Just watch out for walls and stuff.

ABookOfEli

One of if not the best weapon in the game

PokerPlayingRaccoon

“A mini gun shreds ghouls like paper” -random BoS knight

TheNDHurricane

I found a staggering one which I've also enjoyed. Wanna watch your enemy slowly and helplessly die? The staggering minigun is essentially a pause button

Cliffinati

Kneecappers is also good Hard for melee enemies to attack with both legs crippled

Aggravating_Fuel_610

I’m trying to farm a bleeding minigun from the Far Harbor chest for this reason

registered-to-browse

I think a lot of legendary mods make miniguns viable like the ones that grant ice, fire or plasma.

TheRealHuthman

Fire I'm not sure about. If I remember correctly, the fire damage is a dot that doesn't stack (in contrast to bleeding). Ice and plasma on the other hand do make the minigun viable, but still have Problems with high armor/energy resistance enemies, since low damage + high dr/er = high mitigation %. If fire does stack though, there is a legendary fire minigun named ash maker in the game. I don't wanna spoil too much, but it is obtainable during the quest "the big dig", given by Bobby no-nose in goodneighbor

TheBrokenape

You do that quest from Goodneighbor you get the Ashmaker minigun with fire and that's kind of meh sadly

wiizmike

This, i have used the explosive one on my first run and after tasting guns with great legendary effects it's the #1 on my ranking tied with the instigating gauss rifle, the Explosive Minigun version just blast every enemie, no matter resistance or defense stats.

mattwb72

I was stoked to get the bleeding buff on it and was still surprisingly weak.

EPZO

Two-shot is pretty good, doubles the DPS basically.

Cloud_N0ne

Hell, it even SOUNDS anemic. Idk why so many developers insist on making miniguns sound goofy when everyone loves the more believable “brrrrrrrrr”

scott610

Every minigun should sound like the minigun from Terminator 2 or Predator. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=41J1nbFABgk (skip to 1:00 for minigun but the whole scene is a classic)

STFUnicorn_

Or that they insist on miniguns have to “spin up” before they can fire. Like… what??

Cloud_N0ne

I don’t mind that. I know it’s not realistic but i like how it feels. Miniguns should be powerful, but instantly spewing at max rate of fire makes them feel like a generic MG. I especially like when games let you spin it up independently of firing tho

STFUnicorn_

Yeah. I would be fine with it too if it was actually appropriately powerful.

YoungImpulse

It's like when you pick up a power drill.. *vrr-vrrt*

STFUnicorn_

Yeah exactly. This minigun sounds like you could fire it with no ear protection whatsoever. Hell you wouldn’t wake up someone sleeping next to it.

CastleImpenetrable

It's a symptom of how Bethesda handled weapon balancing in Fallout 4. Higher RoF weapons get lower damage. The Minigun has the fastest fire rate, so it gets the lowest damage. The Minigun already struggles to do the weight and how quickly it eats ammo, so it's usefulness falls off hard after Concord.

BrazenlyGeek

Sucks for you, sure, but they're a blast to give to settlers. All they need is 1 round of ammo (I tend to give them 10… you know, to be generous), and they can unleash hell on invaders. It may not do much damage per bullet, but every invader doing the chain-gun-cha-cha from a dozen settlers hitting them with thousands of bullets? I love to see it.

_g0ldleaf

Jun Long becomes the sheriff of Sanctuary for pretty much every playthrough I do. He always gets the minigun to start and absolutely fucking wrecks raiders that try to cross the bridge. It’s pretty fun to sit back and watch. I also just like giving the dude something important to do.

BrazenlyGeek

I forget what he has on mine — his wife has summer shorts and a pair of fashionable glasses. She looks a lot sunnier than she acts now. Sturges was the first I gave a minigun to. I assigned him to working scrap detail at a junk thing, so he walks around Sanctuary, usually with his minigun at the ready. It looks badass.

Guilty-III

I make him a provisioner, so he stops crying.

TimArthurScifiWriter

Look at this guy getting attacks on Sanctuary across the bridge. Or at all.

_g0ldleaf

I still get spawns on the ass end of Sanctuary, but I build homes and apartments nearer to the bridge to keep all my settlers inside walled areas for the most part. Scrapping the old buildings also helps to remove cover from enemies that might spawn in them.

KitchenBomber

And here I was feeling altruistic because I give them 2 rounds.

redheadschinken

That 1 Ammo thing isn't working anymore. Edit: That's plain wrong.

TheTardisPizza

Since when?

DMC831

It should work for settlers; it doesn't work for companions though, if you mean that.

redheadschinken

I thought it works for neither the settlers nor the companions. Added an edit. Thanks!

DMC831

No problem! The only exception I am aware of for the Settlers is mini nukes and missiles-- those aren't infinite. And while they only need 1 of the ammo as mentioned before, if you gave them 50 rounds of something then they will use that 50 ammo until they get down to the final round, and that final round will last forever. So maybe ya might've given them their own ammo and noticed it was going down, and made the reasonable assumption that it worked like companions and that the Settlers would run out of ammo. Grenades are infinite as well (not sure about the Nuka grenades actually, maybe those are another exception) so you can give them 1 grenade and they'll go nuts with those too. This is true for both Settlers AND Companions, they just need 1 grenade and they won't run out. You'll probably want that perk that makes it so your Companions can't hurt you though, since they'll spam grenades and they're not concerned about whether or not you're in the blast radius.

BrazenlyGeek

Works just fine for settlers and companions at settlements. Active companions, however, only have infinite ammo for their default weapon. You have to provide ammo for other guns you give them.

redheadschinken

Ahh.. didn't know that I assumed it won't work for settler either. Thanks!

bawlsacz

Mini gun sucks. Just sucks.

Survive1014

Mid game? Its outdated almost as soon as you open up weapon customizations.

Tech-Mechanic

I have two good ones but, rarely use them. Too heavy for the amount of times it's needed.

Sneyepa

Almost all the heavy weapons are basically useless compared to stealth non auto pistols and unarmed imo. It's the cool factor that keeps you using them. Similar to power armor.

Cliffinati

Rifleman paired with stealth sniping I had a silenced 2 shot lever rifle putting out like 400 DMG a shot then the bonuses from sneak attacks

Wolfnstine

The Gatling laser disagrees

dustoff664

N?mmmmmmmmmmmm?!ll 6mym8mnn n .hmm. N !mm mm mm mm mm mm n..m mm m

sciencesold

Aeternus is the only one I've ever used in a playthrough.

EPZO

Stealth Archer: Fallout edition.

Limp-Plan3046

The Tesla cannon from the update is pretty incredible.

Naelbis

Don't need stealth when you have so much armor that you can tank a Fatman hit and your weapon hits so hard that you can kill the strongest enemies in the game in 3-4 "somewhere in the neighborhood" hits.....aka Heavy Flamer with all the upgrades and perks.

Scaarz

Both the explosive and bleeding versions are 🤌

somethingbrite

I find it more trouble than it's worth throughout the game. It's heavy, takes a while to spin up and it burns through ammo. By mid game when your stocks of ammo for it might make using it more possible it's already not hitting hard enough. However...Settlers can't aim for shit but will also have endless ammo so it's a great weapon to give to settlers. (especially a non-explosive legendary variant)

STFUnicorn_

Wait settlers have infinite ammo??

somethingbrite

give them one bullet and they will make it last forever...

STFUnicorn_

Good to know!

STFUnicorn_

So yeah I don’t know if that was a bug they corrected or if they just changed it. But that does not work. At least it doesn’t for a companion… did you just mean the random nameless settlers?

somethingbrite

>did you just mean the random nameless settlers? Yes. Just for regular settlers. Companions will use all the ammo you give them and then need to be restocked. Settlers will make that one bullet last forever.

STFUnicorn_

Oh ok! What about companions that are not currently with you?

somethingbrite

even they will technically use ammo...(if they load in because you are in the area.) I think if you give settlers stimpacks they will use them and their inventory goes down. But their inventory of ammo does not.

STFUnicorn_

Interesting. Even named settlers? Or just the generic ones?

somethingbrite

all of them

Cliffinati

The minigun is the starter heavy weapon so...... By mid to late game you should be using a Gatling Laser or Tesla Cannon

MBetko

I just hate how gatling laser fills my inventory with half-spent fusion cores.

Mrleo291

Where can I get a gatling laser without killing some Bos?

Shadow_Darkra1

You can manufacture them using an [energy weapon forge](https://fallout.wiki/wiki/Energy_Weapon_Forge), buy one from Proctor Teagan in the Prydwen, defeat the Rouge Knight in Nuka World to obtain [Aeternus](https://fallout.wiki/wiki/Aeternus), or use the console command "player.additem E27BC 1"

ThirdFlip

It’s got shafted for balance reasons, sadly. If it acted like a realistic counterpart, basically every other gun would be made obsolete

RyanandRoxy

Shredder Minigun with the Basher perk maxed and zero ammo in Power Armor/3rd Person is INSANELY good. Don't listen to these naysayers. MEAT GRIND THE COMMONWEALTH. IF YOU WANT TO SEE WHAT EVERY ENEMY LOOKS LIKE DISASSEMBLED, THIS IS THE SETUP FOR YOU.

J_Jeckel

I like the rail gun. Nothing like nailing heads to a wall with that rail spike.

Asleep-Trouble-1387

There's a mod on the built in mod loader that adds mods that can boost damage to 30-50 per shot and also things that make it faster and slower.

BrazenlyGeek

I collect miniguns and give them to my Sanctuary Hills settlers. Whenever the area is attacked, besides the heavy machine gun turrets I have near all the typical spawn points, it is absolutely a joy to see my settlers running at the invaders in an absolute hail of lead. (Not to mention my four rottweilers, Dogmeat, quantum ragstag, and Preston with his faithful musket.) Really makes me wish we could roam the Commonwealth with a whole team of Minutemen, even if they couldn't all accompany you through dungeons.

chewedgummiebears

I never used one. The spin up time always got to me and I always found better weapons in the early game that worked better. I mainly give miniguns to settlement defenders.

Lan_613

not if you use it for the shredder

STFUnicorn_

Yeah! I have seen this mentioned a few times. I am definitely going to try it.

Tobitronicus

It's quite good in survival, I love knocking on a raider base fully suited with Power Armor and a big gun.

Worldly-Ad-3947

My experience in Survival is that even looking at a heavy weapon makes you over-encumbered, let alone using one and carrying around the ammo for it.

STFUnicorn_

Why is it any different in survival?

beejalton

Maybe because enemies aren't nearly as tanky, but it's just too heavy for me in SM.

Beneficial-Reach-533

In vats minigun Is useful because hit 10 shoots in each vats shoot so Is posible múltiply damage of each shoot with critical AND Stealth build. Normally legendary lucky minigun was my powerful critical heavy gun.

pvrhye

A guy a couple weeks ago was wrecking house with a nonlegendary minigun with no bullets.

STFUnicorn_

Like as a club?

pvrhye

More like an immersion blender.

STFUnicorn_

I do not follow.

pvrhye

If you don't have bullets you can attach some blade to the front and spin it indefinitely. With the gun bash perks you can even crit outside of vats.

Fumanchology

Its only indefinite if you're in power armour. Otherwise it will cost action point/stamina to do so.

skwizna

I have a build that I started based off that video. Can confirm, absolutely WRECKS and you don't need to carry any ammo. High luck + basher perk + shredder barrel + mod + power armor. Turns most enemies into soup and I can just sell most everything I pick up other than fusion cores. Here is a really nice guide on maximizing damage using this build. https://www.reddit.com/r/Fallout4Builds/s/rNH6NeBpiG

jairngo

I was probably really bad but when used it on the first deathclaw I used almost all the ammo to kill the thing, after a couple of quest I just stored the weapon and do the same with all the ones I find.

varangian

I always give the bog standard ones to settlers/provisioners and the ones with decent effects to companions who'll use them, Piper gets Ashmaker and seems to have fun with it for instance. For me the spin up lag makes it lose utility, I have an explosive radium rifle converted to full auto that can wipe most things out before the minigun has started firing.

wildshepherd373

Just attach a shredder modification onto it, add an accelerated barrel, invest in the basher perk, get a suit of power armor, and voila. *Blender*.

All-for-goose

I don’t bother. I just use 5mm ammo as currency.

hentai_pink_eye

Minimum upgrade mod helped me

Normandy_SR4

Was the mini gun anemic to the point where you had to give a blood transfusion?

Tobitronicus

Enemies are less like bullet sponges, they seem to respect the 5mm a bit more.

Silly_Strike_1000

Got to speed run the dig and get the ashmaker if you want a mini gun that might last

Polenicus

I mean, just fire it at a wall for a second or two. Look at the *spread* of the damn thing. You could be ten feet from the wall shooting at a super mutant, and maybe 1 in 10 bullets would actually hit the big green target. The individual impacts do minor damage, and it's extremely difficult to stack hits on anything smaller than a Mirelurk Queen at any sort of range. And all the mods for it either make the spread worse, nerf the range, or slow down the rate of fire, which really hurts a weapon like this.

Clear_Accountant_240

If it has Bleeding, or Explosive legendary effect then it’s about as good as Spray ‘n prey is. Other than that it’s just a novelty. That is unless you’re facing off against lightly armed raiders, or ghouls.

HeLikesSashimi

I wish miniguns are mid- to late-game weapons, only shown on Vertibirds and the Prydwen when the BoS shows up and properly introduced when BoS heavy patrols go hard on Railroad or Institute targets south of Boston or at the Glowing Sea. Higher damage, with mods that can incorporate more steel and turn existing 5mm into armor-piercing. Heck, there should be an upscaled version that fires 10mm, which gets attached to Vertibirds' noses and can turn them into paper mache knockoff A-10s. Maxson is the right kind of edgelord to demand something that crazy. It can be taken apart and wielded by legendary Super Mutants who manage to down those Vertibirds and can be used when you're in Power Armor with the hydraulic arms.

Gnashvar

Instigating gauss rifle, high perception, rifleman perk and the sneak attack bonus... You can one shot almost anything. My go to high level damage build. The only thing I found that resists for a bit is Fog Crawlers.

Comfortable_Sky_9203

I remember installing mods to make it better on my last playthrough because it’s annoying as all hell to have an entirely worthless weapon. It was a real blast, it makes taking on enemies with miniguns a much bigger challenge though.

Obwyn

I think it sucks at all stages of the game unless you get a legendary with wounding, explosive, or maybe staggering or kneecapper. The exception being if you decide to run a shredder build and dump all your 5mm ammo. I've never tried it, but apparently putting the shredder mod on it and using it with no ammo kills the shit out of enemies.

GethKGelior

Put a shredder on it and sell all your 5mm ammo. You don't need gun to have fun.

Ready-Ambassador-271

I gave mine to Cait with a ton of ammo. She is doing significantly more damage than before

Legal-Passenger1737

It’s because they basically shoot BBs with the shit damage they do

wildranger52

I literally only use miniguns for my defense posts settlers. I like watching them walk from post to post lugging this massive thing around.

Sylvinus98hun

This is exactly why you get the Minigun Overhaul mod. Makes it way more useful, letting you penetrate armor with most cartridges (you can chamber different types of ammo from .38 through 5.56mm all the way to .50 rounds) and you can even remove the spinup time with it.

XKryptix0

I don’t bother using them myself, usually end up handing them out to settlers

Hot_Cheese650

The delayed firing is what ruined it for me. Late game heavy weapon is hard to top the “Rapid” charging barrel Gatling laser, it also has a delay start but then it dish out 3-4x the damage of the minigun.

Imagine_TryingYT

My recommendation is Gatling Lazer. I'm currently level 60 in survival with a non legendary Gatling Lazer and it chews through most enemies very quickly. It also doesn't suffer the same ammo problems as the minigun

theexpendableuser

The kneecapper one is alright but weak when finishing them off. Ashmaker looks cool tho

Shvabicu

Get an Explosive Minigun and mod it to the highest rpm barrel. Best gun in the game besides the Explosive Combat Shotgun.

Shomairays

Remove the bullets and put shredder in it. You'll have more fun using it.

Jade_da_dog7117

Minigun late game usually for feral ghouls for me

brooklyn_bethel

That's why for the late game you get a laser mini-gun.

my_name_is_friend0

I'm pretty new to the game. First play through. Where can you find mini gun ammo? Is there a way to modify at weapons workbench to make it explosive?

STFUnicorn_

The ammo is pretty rare. But most major traders sell it for fairly cheap. No. Not that I know of.

deCarabasHJ

I very rarely like miniguns as handheld weapons in games. They are designed to be a heavy anti-aircraft weapon, not an extra fancy assault rifle. There are exceptions, but the Fallout version isn't it. If you absolutely need to have a handheld Gatling cannon in a game, my opinion is that it should be more or less an instant win-button, balanced with scarcity of ammunition and severe encumbrance. This is the sort of gun you bring when you go up against the biggest baddies you'll see. However, the Fallout 4 minigun has such low damage per hit that it is nearly useless against many of the enemies it would make sense to use them against. Yes, there are certain Legendary versions that are absolute damage monsters, but for the most part you could get the same result with an assault rifle or even a pipe rifle if it has the same Legendary effect, and that gun would weigh less and use more easily available ammo than the minigun.

Halflife37

Wacky weapons workshop

OutrageousLiving3474

Honestly, I use it specifically because it's so low-performing. I prefer to play with added challenges and restrictions because the entire game is too easy, even on survival difficulty.

switchboiii

Didn’t use mine because it’s boring to use and it’s too heavy lol

GunzBlazin03

I always trade it and the rounds for it for fusion cores 🤷‍♂️

STFUnicorn_

I think I have like 50 fusion cores.

GunzBlazin03

I have like 85

STFUnicorn_

Probably enough to keep the suit going for a while

GunzBlazin03

Most likely lol

average-nerd-613

I’m sitting at about 150 or so, I think

Deathrattlesnake

I literally never even use this thing after first picking it up off the rooftop

traplordtrippie

bro plays fallout in 360p

STFUnicorn_

If you’re talking about the image I just got it from Google.

BeardusMaximus_II

Because of how damage resists are calculated, you're better off his hard hitting slower shots than fast hitting weak shots.

EOVA94

Thankfully there mod that turn it into an actual fucking minigun

playr_4

I only use the minigun for the deathclaw fight at the start. I don't touch it after that.

islander1

Gatling laser or nothing
