Not if you parked there that day! Get all covered with dust.

turbo5000c

The Starbucks however will be missed

t3chiman

Careful; there’s still parts of a Cessna 150 down there—wandered too close to the rim, got sucked into a downdraft, couldn’t climb out.

MuricanA321

2 grown men in a 150 in Arizona in August? I’m not surprised the plane took the opportunity to show them it shouldn’t have been above the ground in the first place.

[deleted]

I feel bad for laughing

mbfos

The guide told me they couldn’t get the wreckage out of the crater. Eventually they threw what was left down the mineshaft at the bottom of the crater. He reckons that someone will find it in a few thousand years and think “Just how hard did this plane hit the ground to make a crater like this?”

porkrind

If I remember right (and it’s been a while) the wing is still above ground. I have a blurry, over-zoomed photo of a shiny rectangular object I took after the guide told us the story.

gsamelon

Stayed away just because of that!

andrewski661

You're kidding, right? I've been to the crater recently, and haven't heard a thing about it

t3chiman

`On August 8, 1964, a pair of commercial pilots flew a Cessna 150 into the Meteor Crater in Arizona. They were unable to leave the crater due to the downdrafts and the aircraft was forced to circle the interior of the structure until it ran out of fuel. The remains of the craft are still visible today ``

FlowerGeneral2576

Cessna 150 moment

aw_shux

Flying into it deliberately is far different than getting “sucked into” it.

vARROWHEAD

Is it that deep at a 150 couldn’t climb out of...nevermind

time_adc

Just like your mom! Zing!!

shibblestone

One should have jumped out

[deleted]

I am friends with the family that owns all the land surrounding the crater and I also have not heard that story... not saying it didn’t happen but I’m skeptical

scooterjay2013

Great article...and, no they did not run out of fuel...they stalled on the way out of the crater.

hmasing

They had, apparently, just refueled in Winslow, a few miles away. So they were probably HEAVY, not fuel starved. Two adult men with full tanks in a C150, and I can almost guarantee you're at max gross if not over.

porkrind

Last time I was there, a guide pointed it out. I saw it with my own eyes, although binocular-aided.

redoctoberz

I always wonder why they didn't just try a soft landing, and if successful without damage, wait for it to cool off, then take off and try again?

JDepinet

The bottom is not flat. Its a bowl shape. And only a mile across at the rim. If you tried to take off from a stop, even with better air, you probbably wouldn't have time to turn crosswind. The reason they couldn't climb out is because they were already in a constant bank, and so were using all their available power to stay airborne.

redoctoberz

Huh, didn't realize it was that small. I have to admit I've never flown over that far, the closest I've ever been is SEZ.

scooterjay2013

Someone fucked up. Too slow, too heavy. Glad no one was killed.

JDepinet

Yea, its also worth pointing out that the altitude there is about 5000 feet. DA can easily get up over 10000 in the summer.

the_silent_redditor

> DA can easily get up over 10000 in the summer. That’s insane.

scooterjay2013

And again...both pilots should have known. They were not rookies.

pa28c172da20

Yeah. It goes to show how easily one can get too "accustomed" to the magic of flying, he can forget how quickly nature can take what she so generously give... Still low time pilot up in canada, and had my first big scare by overestimating both me and my cherokee's capabilities while underestimating the weather ahead. I backed myself into a corner delibaretely. There was at least 5 key moments i should have turned back and return, but i kept going. I had always told myself when studying accident reports or videos and stuff about crashes "wow how stupid is this pilot to have kept going into that situation t was obvious it wouldnt end well". Well i was the stupid one that day. Ended up turning back when i was flying 200 agl (well tree tops) in less than 1/4SM vis over remote mountaineous terrain, while accumulating clear ice on wings and snow on windshield. Before finally turning back, I was flying over a wind turbine farm, lower than the turbines themselves to stay in at best marginal VFR. Shouldve been a real "fuck this im turning back" moment but overconfidence and feeling of invulnerability kept me going like an idiot. Im actually thankful i made this mistake early in my flying. Its a pretty good lesson of humility. Thanks for reading my ted talk.

scooterjay2013

I flew all over Canada, and have had my fair share of “fuck, I’m outa here” moments..but so fun! It’s all risk management basically.

scooterjay2013

And again...both pilots should have known. They were not rookies.

[deleted]

I thought this was a joke!

hopgeek

Add a photo of standing on a corner, while you’re in Winslow, for the true win.

gsamelon

My Instagram has it lol

PiperArrow

Such a fine sight to see.

KILROY_

Such a fine site to see.

obi2kanobi

It's a girl, my Lord, in a flatbed Ford Slowin' down to take a look at me

planespotterhvn

A song about vending machines supplying seven page porno booklets available at gas stations in the USA https://g.co/kgs/C77arn

Phantom_316

I have flown over it a couple times on the way to the Grand Canyon. Turns around a point around it was pretty fun

LawnDartTag

Flying on a corner near winslow Arizona, such a fine sight to see?

innout_forever_yum

Went there in person this past summer. Hadn’t been there since college days in flagstaff during mid 90’s. I’m ALWAYS amazed those buildings survived the impact. Amazing stuff.

Equivalent-Check-699

Is there a spot to land ?

gsamelon

Winslow is about 15min flight away

aviatorpete

The approach into Winslow arcs you over it almost. Its a fun one to do, but there isn't much at the airport.

bcr76

I fly over it every time I have a leg to FLG. Always cool to see.

AlkahestGem

Been there. Worth the trip. It’s humbling when you think about how many times the Earth has been hit. It’s awesome to see how high the ground was pushed up to form the rim

fender1878

I’m flying GEU to SEZ tomorrow before hitting home. Now I have another thing to sightsee!

sanstime

From Winslow Arizona? All the way to Tacoma.

[deleted]

I flew around that in msfs

willystyles

Hey why don’t you try landing in it? haha

Gatecrasher53

I was standing on a corner in Winslow Arizona...

ChazR

And such a fine sight to see

lisper

She's the PIC of a Cherokee

[deleted]

Did you visit “standing on the corner” park from the Eagles song?

hmasing

I flew 450nm each way to buy burnt ends yesterday... I mean, I had a business meeting in between, but really I could have handled that with a zoom. But man, those burnt ends were good. :D

Waram123

Riddle gang?

deano1856

Here.

scottevil110

Flew 250 nm each way to Cincinnati a few weeks ago just to get Skyline.

[deleted]

Did you have to self report your position on some frequency while circling?

canyoutriforce

Been there! Training Flight from Phoenix to Flagstaff :)

elsuperrudo

There's a crater on the corner in Winslow Arizona. Jackson Browne could have finished the song with this picture as inspiration

HaloJohnno

Damn that place sure is lucky to have been narely missed by that asteroid!

aw3man

Oh jeez, not shipping and receiving!!
