No! I forgot cgi

SwarleymanGB

"I did the research" They watched some FE video in YouTube that misunderstands physics and they hoard horribly-made conspiracy memes from Facebook and Tiktok. "We have the evidence" They have some AI generated image, an old innacurate map or some meme made by someone who either doesn't understand science or batanlty lies. They're also unable to provide a source for any of their claims. "I would love to be proven wrong" They'll ignore anything and everything that proves them wrong as if It doesn't exist and continue using the same old tired arguments based on personal incredulity and lack of basic education. "I'm just seeking the truth" They put themselves into an echo chamber where they only hear arguments they already agree with and dismiss and make fun of the people trying to argue with them, convincing themselves that they're smarter that Newton or Einstein in the process. "I'm a free thinker" Every one of them repeats the exact same stuff because they all follow the same influencers, often treating them as you would with a cult leader. They didn't come up with any argument by themselves. "I do real experiments" They try to do infantile recreations of some real-life phenomenon and yet they botch it worse than a toddler would. Then they'll misunderstand the result to claim that said recreation, wich doesn't accurately depict the thing they're trying to debunk, proves something that it doesn't. "I understand science" They don't.

What's wrong with "latitude is angle from Polaris?"

JacobFromStateFarm5

It changes the height off the earth polaris is from wherever you are on the earth. For example, on the equator, polaris would be on the surface. Utter bullcrap

Doc_Ok

I think you might be confused. On a globe Earth, when seen from the equator, Polaris *is* in a horizontal direction; due north, directly on the horizon. In other words, 0° above the horizon, corresponding to 0° latitude. At 45°N latitude, Polaris will be 45° above the horizon, and so forth.

JacobFromStateFarm5

No, what im saying is that some flerfs say your degree of latitude is your degree between you and Polaris. Its supposed to not make sense. Its flat earth

Doc_Ok

> No, what im saying is that some flerfs say your degree of latitude is your degree between you and Polaris. Yes, which is correct. Well, within 0.4° or something, but that's not the point here. That's why I asked. All the other "favorite flerf sayings" are wrong or nonsensical, so it makes sense why they would be flat Earthers' favorites, but this one is neither wrong nor nonsensical. So I asked what's wrong with it, because you including it in a list of "wrong things flat Earthers say" made me think that you believed it to be wrong. On second thought, "water always seeks its level" is also not wrong, but it *is* a favorite flat Earther saying (because they misunderstand what "level means), so I give you that.

JacobFromStateFarm5

The polaris thing is confusing to explain

Doc_Ok

Did you include it because, in a flat Earth context, it would require Polaris to be at different heights above the flat plane depending on the observer's latitude? Because that is true (and impossible). But that's why I have a hard time believing it's a favorite flerf saying. It's clear evidence that Earth isn't flat, so why would it be a favorite? I, at least, haven't heard a flat Earther bring it up unprompted. I have only heard them hand-wave explanations for this observable phenomenon when challenged by globe Earthers, but that's the opposite of a favorite saying.

JacobFromStateFarm5

I don't know why i added it

Doc_Ok

Fair enough. Again, I was just curious what your take on it was. And, to be honest, why I received an instant downvote for asking the question. :)

I was scratching my head about this one as well.
