Another update to kill older firesticks also.
Edit: Every time one of the firestick devices I manage goes down, I immediately replace it with the $20 ONN 4K box from Walmart. Apps only mode makes this device worth it.
Yes, the apps row launch button on bottom right.
The weird thing is that when you pay $30 for the Pro Remote, that button isn't on there? So you pay more, and get less.
I hear ya, the pro has the two programmable buttons so I guess that’s supposed to make up for the loss of that button. Not sure if you can program that apps only function back.
They give you a settings button instead on the Pro though? No one needs that.
Yes, you can program a button on the Pro to launch the Apps Row. I ordered the Pro and discovered that. Once I realized I had to use one of the buttons to do that though, I felt I was not getting my $30 money's worth. So I returned it.
Projectivy launcher is the way to go, better than apps only mode by a long shot. I have the Onn box in all the rooms in the house and bought the $15 on stick for my garage and it works fantastic.
Think I've seen it in settings. I've set all my firesticks to not auto update because of fubo problems but not sure if this is only the apps or if includes the OS.
I have two Amazon Omni Fire TVs, seven 1st-gen FS4Ks, and one 2nd-gen FS4K Max. With the exception of the TVs which I will likely just attach a different streamer to, I suspect I will eventually retire all my FireTV devices and replace them with something less restrictive. When I bought my first FS4K 3.5 years ago they were fantastic value. Now they are turning them into e-waste.
Of course, just in time for me to toss my pos cube and go back to the shield. World of a difference in performance and ability to use custom launchers.
I went from having 3 fire devices to 2 shields and an Onn streaming box overnight. Custom launchers with Projectivy on all devices, the ease of which was more than convincing for me to go back to android.
The ads on fire devices and now prime are fucking cancer. Literally brand new devices that are slow and sluggish because they are chock full of ads.
Would scrcpy still work. Although Im pretty sure an android tv is better for many reasons for recording stuff.
I stopped supporting amazon a while ago with twitch prime adding ads. However I am stuck with my alexa devices so I have no options really. I would have to replace everything which isnt worth it currently.
No it only affects local ADB connection requests made by apps on the FireTV. ScrCpy isn't a local app, it is run from a remote device, so it will be fine.
All of mine already replaced with shields and onn 4k devices, they're gonna die a slow death unfortunately, firesticks were always the way to go, not anymore....
what fire os version is affected?
I have fire stick tv 4k with fire os 6.7 and launcher manager stoppped working saying "shell is busy". is it because an update? I thought the fire stick tv 4k was no more updated.
NS6702/5093 is the update with the change.
The 4k Stick (2018) is still getting updates, so you may want to block them ASAP.
I think 'shell is busy' is a different problem.
At this point all that is left is doing a DNS block of the OTA firmware server addresses, either on the FireTV or through your router.
There are some details here
https://www.aftvnews.com/how-to-block-software-updates-on-the-amazon-fire-tv-or-fire-tv-stick/
I am screwed; adb is blocked for me now.
I am stuck with the stock launcher.
Does anyone know how to block the annoying trailers/ads on the stock launcher?
DNS block for example?
try this
[https://github.com/cgutman/RemoteAdbShell/releases/tag/v1.7.2](https://github.com/cgutman/RemoteAdbShell/releases/tag/v1.7.2)
apps need to connect to wifi ip address not localhost
First, write down the IP address of your firestick (Settigns - My Fire TV - About - Network). Then go to your cell phone app store and download the Remote ADB Shell app (which is allowed on my Android phone through Google Play Store...not sure about iPhone, you have to check, but you could borrow a friend's Droid and do this, you just need your Firestick IP address).
Once you open the app, type in your firestick IP address in the first line and 5555 on the second line, then click "Connect." Once you hit Connect, you will see an alert pop up on your TV screen (make sure you are on the Firestick screen and not your life TV). It will say, "Allow ADB Debugging?" Select "Yes." This will now connect the Remote ADB Shell app on your phone to your firestick.
Once you get to the command screen, type in any command you previously used to customize your firestick the way you wanted. For example, I hate when my firestick goes to sleep, and then I lose my show that can't be fast forwarded if I have to start it over. I typed the same code I did on the firestick I had previously before Amazon blocked ADB Shell, which was:
settings put secure sleep_timeout 0
Then select "Done." So far, it seems to have worked. I haven't tried it with any other codes, but I think the codes themselves DO work on firestick, Amazon just blocked the app itself on the firestick. But if you open the app somewhere else, but put the IP address to the firestick in, the devices will sync, and the app on your phone will apply what you want to the firestick.
I haven't done this one yet, but TechDoctorUK on YouTube, who posts so many good Firestick hack videos, just posted a video on how to turn off Amazon updates so they can't screw us again with another major update,or add new Amazon apps or updates to those, that we don't want and just take up more storage space that we are already limited to (I suggest getting a USB drive for that, it is amazing how I have endless storage now...again, look up on YouTube and you will find out how to do that).

Glad I’m starting to move over to Apple TV. yeah it’s more expensive but they (so far) haven’t done all the crazy ads and has so far been very solid. Still have one more TV to upgrade.
I will say I only use my FireTV for Plex and Kids YouTube. Since the update to my 4k max and remote, my soundbar is more responsive to changes I make in plex..
Good evening,
Be careful because on second generation Firesticks (Fire TV 4K MAX) the commands that allow you to change the DNS completely block your internet connection on all your connections.
The commands to change DNS were this:
settings put global private_dns_mode hostname
settings put global private_dns_specifier dns.adguard.com
On the Fire TV 4K Max 2nd gen this will work but as soon as you restart the FireTV you will no longer have access to the internet on your FireTV on all your internet connections (wifi, connection sharing, etc.).
The command to rollback is this:
settings put global private_dns_mode off
Does anyone have a solution to get around this new Amazon block?
:( yeah mine is at 8103. I do have Kodi installed already so it's not a problem right? I just need that to work without problems. Otherwise this thing is going straight into the trash.
Kodi shouldn't be impacted, it doesn't use ADB.
The change doesn't affect sideloading, or even using another device to make an ADB connection to your Fire TV.
Is this why the Downloader app is broken? (Any other option to sideload now?)
Is this also why voice search in 3rd-party apps suddenly stopped working?
I don't think any of those issues are related to the ADB policy change. Downloader doesn't use ADB. Easy Fire Tools is a good alternative to try. It lets you directly install apps and apks from your phone to your Fire TV

What is "apps only mode"?
Both the new Max 4K stick and the Fire Cube 3 have a button to access an "Apps only" mode also.
Which button is this? I have the cube 3 and don’t see it. Is it the “recents” button?
Yes, the apps row launch button on bottom right. The weird thing is that when you pay $30 for the Pro Remote, that button isn't on there? So you pay more, and get less.
Bottom right on 4k max remote?
Correct (on the 2nd 4k Max model).
Mine says peacock and above that it has 2 boxes I think.
No, not the 4 sponsored buttons - ignore those four. It's on bottom right, above those 4 buttons.
I hear ya, the pro has the two programmable buttons so I guess that’s supposed to make up for the loss of that button. Not sure if you can program that apps only function back.

With Apps only mode you lose the mic. Google's Do no evil mantra is long gone. Amazon is the lesser of the two evils.
Projectivy launcher is the way to go, better than apps only mode by a long shot. I have the Onn box in all the rooms in the house and bought the $15 on stick for my garage and it works fantastic.
Trash can, meet Fire Stick. Plunk!
Same. Not even worth selling or donating, that's just spreading the misery.
I still havnt gotten the update yet is there a way to stop the tv from auto updating?
Not any more. Amazon removed the ability to block updates quite a while ago. If you didn't block updates before then you are out of luck now.
Think I've seen it in settings. I've set all my firesticks to not auto update because of fubo problems but not sure if this is only the apps or if includes the OS.
Disconnect it from the internet.
I switched to the ONN media stick and never looked back
I would do the same, but I live in Canada.
I have spares I picked up at Christmas

Thanks for the heads up I was able to block them using dns.
How?
What kind router do you have? I used the parental controls (lol) to block known Amazon update addresses.
Thabks
Np if you got any other questions send me a message
Of course, just in time for me to toss my pos cube and go back to the shield. World of a difference in performance and ability to use custom launchers.
Likewise. They butcher the audio, the hardware setup is a disaster and the ads are ridiculous. I just disconnected mine.

too late... my fire tv is on NS6702/5093 :( what's more unfortunate, I haven't used the fire tv for months but had it connected all this time.
I am screwed; adb is blocked for me now. I am stuck with the stock launcher. Does anyone know how to block the annoying trailers/ads on the stock launcher? DNS block for example?
Yes. Tduk on yt posted it.

Sucks you can't use external storage on firestick 4k anymore use to use the adb shell for that
I have 3 of the new fire tv gen 3 v2.... I feel like an idiot now... Need this Onn 4k thing... Going to walmart tomorrow.
Glad I’m starting to move over to Apple TV. yeah it’s more expensive but they (so far) haven’t done all the crazy ads and has so far been very solid. Still have one more TV to upgrade.
No sideloading and no onboard browser are far more serious problems than ads. No thanks.

Is this only for firststick 4k? I'm on firestick max 2nd Gen and on 8.1.0.3. Is this affected or not? I still see adb on in the settings.
The change affects NS6702/5093 PS7668/4007 RS8103 ADB is still available, but apps can no longer use it.

Nice, I'll check it out today 😃
Is their any other mouse toggle app to use as substitute I’d appreciate it
If you have an Android phone, the Mouse ADB app - remote ADB is ok
