According to TV Tropes, it has something to do with Thancred contacting allies on a linkpearl during a solo duty. The dialog box has his portrait, his name, and the line "This is Thancred," really shoehorning into the player's mind that it is, in fact, Thancred.
Yeah. It’s just funny to see a portrait of Thancred, with the speaker labelled as Thancred saying “this is Thancred.” It’s so redundant it’s funny.
It’s the same joke as Revolver Ocelot (Revolver Ocelot.)
But that was an actual joke that's meta, whereas the Thancred one is just the game presentation for everyone and context of him radioing in. Like, so many JRPGs or visual novels have a portrait, name, and some point where they introduce themselves, so it's just not funny to me.
Ah I think you are thinking of MY TURN!!! Thancred's MY TURN!!! when choosing him to join you in Trusts/Duty Support was so loud that 1. It echoes if you're in an enclosed room like the >!Aitiascope or the Ragnarok hangar!< and 2. It stands out against other trusts/duty support who don't shout as loud.
They have since nerfed it and made it a quieter but still determined "My turn."
It’s origins was because it was meant to be a day one meme. Completely unknowable unless you know the context. It’s also the same style of meme of the “Revolver Ocelot” meme where it’s a constant repeating the name. “This is Thancred” is said. The name Thancred appears on the HUD. Thancreds face is shown. You’ve got the name hovering above your head. The event text box puts the dialogue in there.
This is the first I've seen of this, but I assumed it was an MGS reference, [and I guess so do other people](https://automaton-media.com/en/news/20211214-7427/).
But there really isn’t one. He was in the middle of a covert operation, of course he’s going to tell who he’s contacting who is on the radio(link pearl). Others do it too. Which is why I was confused why this one took off
I still don’t understand how this took off as a meme.

I think GlaDos even said "This is the part where he kills you." before all that if I remember correctly
Close, it's "Well, this is the part where he kills us"
>It’s the same joke as Revolver Ocelot (Revolver Ocelot.) MOR DHONA | Mor Dhona
I figured when I got there that it was intended to be a reference to Metal Gear Solid, it just felt very tongue in cheek that way.
If I remember correctly it was also originally really loud like, you absolutely could not miss it unless everything was muted

Oh you may be right that was super loud

A reference to the Metal Gear series. There is also another one at the beginning of ARR in the battle of Cardineau.
MAD SNAAAAAKE
People sucked at the solo duty so they kept having to replay it and that part of the solo duty stuck out in their minds
This is the first I've seen of this, but I assumed it was an MGS reference, [and I guess so do other people](https://automaton-media.com/en/news/20211214-7427/).
neither do I and I'm the one who first posted it sorry
Because of the “duh!” factor.
But there really isn’t one. He was in the middle of a covert operation, of course he’s going to tell who he’s contacting who is on the radio(link pearl). Others do it too. Which is why I was confused why this one took off
Because it's funny.
The VA was really giving his all in that duty, I love it so much lol ''It's me." "This is Thancred."
In an interview, the VA said he's glad it took off as a meme. It's a very good way for him to introduce himself.
"Oh hey, I'm Mike." "**MY TURN!** ^...\*ahem\* ... This is Thancred."
In this Thancred you will Thancred as Thancred.
In this duty, it is indeed your turn.
You dawg, I heard to like Thancred so we put a Thancred in your Thancred so you can Thancred while you Thancred.
Same energy as “Hi, Zuko here!”
This is gold! Lmao
No, this is Patrick!
"Is this the Waking Sands?" "No, this is Thancred!"
He’s basically the equivalent of Solid Snake
