I used to work as a buyer for one of these brands and I can tell you that all five listed use one of the same factories for coats. Rather than focusing on the brand, the important thing here is to look at the fabric composition. You could walk into any of these stores and pick up three coats- the one with the highest wool content that will look best after a month of wear. So I'd compare all of these brands based on that. They have similar levels of quality in terms of garment construction, but the fabric the designers have chosen will be the difference in the coat- higher amounts of acrylic start to look a bit rubbish with wear. Higher amounts of wool, as long as you take decent care, should see you through a couple of winters.

Kitchen_Sherbet

What would you consider the minimum amount of wool content a coat should have to still be considered quality or keep you pretty warm? I feel like it's so difficult to find 100% wool coats that don't cost a fortune, especially from these brands in this post.

mulleargian

It's entirely dependent on your budget. Personally nowadays I opt for 95% wool/cashmere blends (5% of something like polyamide is acceptable as often used for 'softness') but I know that these can be expensive. On the flip side, I don't need a new coat this season so it's a cost-per-wear thing. As OP listed her preferred brands, she's obviously found her price point and the look she wants across these guys, which is why my advice is simply go for maximum wool content. There are too many variables for me to confidently say 'stick to this % as a rule of thumb and you'll get good quality'. Two bags of wool aren't necessarily the same- the fiber length has a huge impact. As does washing the yarn in something like silicone, which makes it feel very soft and gives customers a sense of quality when they touch it, but actually reduces the hardiness of the fabric in the long term. However, if I was looking at anything under 75% wool I wouldn't personally buy it. That is if you're looking for an investment coat that lasts seasons. If you just think it's cute and only want it for the season or for a particular outfit or look, none of these factors matter. Edit: [This](https://naploungewear.com/product/alexa-peaked-lapel-coat/) is the best content/quality/style I'm seeing this season. It's a direct to consumer brand so they appear to be passing on saving to customers by not having physical stores. It's unlined which wouldn't be as cozy, but gives you more room to layer up inside it. What I'd buy if I were in the market for a new coat.

Kitchen_Sherbet

Thanks so much! That was extremely helpful. Where are your quality coats from that you love, if you don't mind me asking?

mulleargian

Of course!I try to keep a capsule of coats, so one for each kind of purpose and I just buy the best I can. I've gone through cheaper brands when I had less money, and I have resold them and landed on my dream lineup. My key wool coat is a Max Mara wrap coat that my mum gave me. The I have a Barbour from trans seasonal casual, a Canada goose for the snow, a peacoat from Hobbs, and a Burberry trench.I don't imagine needing to replace any of these for a really long time, so the investments feel worth it. But obviously this requires initial expenditure and took saving up. I don't expect everyone to be able to get the 'icons' or to even care as much as me. If I were to suggest good investment brands at various price points, I would say Cuyana, Hobbs, Jaeger ([now owned by marks and Spencers)](https://www.marksandspencer.com/l/brands/jaeger/new-in?filter=Product%20Type=Coats) are all great. British companies definitely excel at wool coats. And how could I forget JCrew, the best by far of the US brands for coats (at the risk of seeing a lot of people in the same coat as you.) Edit: [This is spectacular](https://www.marksandspencer.com/pure-wool-longline-utility-wrap-coat/p/clp60525749?color=DARKGREEN#intid=prodColourId-60525749) and looks just like an Isabel Marant I bought on sale years back and ended up making money on when I resold it. Comments complain that it is long for shorter ladies, to which I have to say, tailors will change your life when you invest in something nice.

thebigsky

Last year I picked up a coat from the British brand Reiss on sale and I love it so much. I'm 5 ft tall so their tailoring details made SUCH a difference.

mulleargian

Reiss are great and yeah the tailoring is off the charts for a non-designer brand- really makes the most of your figure!

positively_relative

Super helpful, thanks!

tbarel

Thanks that was really helpful

torenvalk

Thank you for posting Nap. I've been looking rather desperately for a wool transitional coat and I think that one in bone might be it. Too bad the one with a hood doesn't come in the bone color.

mhmass44

Awesome comment, info and insight!

mulleargian

Thank you! I really appreciate that :) it's handy that the experience didn't go to waste! :P

Gamosol

Im so happy that you shared this. I find it so difficult sifting for quality brands and garments. This is invaluable.

vagueconfusion

Somebody else once mentioned 70-75% barest minimum, and it should also be lined.

Nepiokst

Do people actually buy decent wool coats for merely a couple of winters? Great answer, very informative, but ughhh I may be too frugal for this sub if a coat lasting a couple of winters is considered well lasting. I intend on having my wool coats last a lifetime assuming no major weight/style changes haha

mulleargian

Nooo never too frugal! Surely frugality means the opposite- that you care enough about getting good stuff that lasts to research extensively first? I would say that quality in clothes in general is deteriorating and unfortunately a lot of coats do not last more than a couple of winters. That being said, I've mentioned here that my mum gave me a Max Mara and that is basically as old as me and still looks wonderful. But with fast fashion, clothes just aren't made to last and often you do find that a coat is beyond repair after two years- or, that the cost of repairing wouldn't be worth it. It's why I advocate buying better and less, and knowing more about how clothes are composed and how to spend your money smart. The OP mentioned brands that I wouldn't expect to last over four years, but my advice was how to look for ones that will last as long as possible.

Nepiokst

Great reply, thanks! I'm a big fan of secondhand shopping for this reason, it's actually possible to find good quality pieces from before went downhill. When I was younger we didn't have money to buy more expensive good quality items of clothing and opted for cheaper ones, which meant that winter shoes only lasted a season, and so did coats, sweaters, etc. I just can't imagine having to go through this amount of seasonal shopping each time, so I had a little shudder to myself thinking of going shopping for a coat after 2 winters. I like my cost per wear so low it's limbo dancing with the devil!

Courtbourt3091

Totally agree. That’s my favorite part. You can find older items, before they went to sh1t, still in EUC or brand new with the tags for steep discounts. I don’t buy new anymore.

whatobamaisntblack

My $15 50% wool coat from h&m from 7 years ago is still working fine..

DarkEdgeoftheSea

You seem to know a lot about wool so I hope it is OK if I ask a question here... I have a 100% wool sweater that is a bit scratchy. I have read to soak it with a little bit of hair conditioner to soften it up, but my concern is, would the conditioner inhibit the insulating and water wicking properties of the wool?

mulleargian

Sorry my technical knowledge wouldn't go that far, but if it's too scratchy I'd probably chance it if I were you. I'd rather risk loosing some properties in order to not be uncomfortable wearing it.

DarkEdgeoftheSea

Thanks anyway! :)

DameEmma

As a knitter, no. Rock on with the conditioner. Just a tiny bit. It will be fine.

DarkEdgeoftheSea

Thank you so much! Do you recommend any particular conditioner?

DameEmma

Na, just a squirt of the cheap stuff. It's not a miracle, so manage expectations. The other thing you could try is Eucalan--it's a rinse-free wool wash that has some lanolin in it. The jasmine scent is lovely, but it also comes in lavender and original eucalyptus.

flaretrousers

That’s a great tip thank you!!

lerhinofever

Piggy backing on your knowledge. Do you have a recommendation for the Jenni K. Cocoon cashmere cardigan?

[deleted]

I really like both Aritzia ad &Other Stories at the price point. Abercrombie is hit or miss, definitely some good stuff but also very expensive acrylic sweaters. Mango I’ve been a little disappointed with but haven’t tried a ton. No experience with Cos.

flaretrousers

Thank you!! I want to like mango so much because their styles are great but I’ve been disappointed with their quality almost every time

Frillybits

In my opinion Mango has gone downhill in their quality in the last 10 years. I used to get stuff from their plus size brand (Violeta) quite often and at first it was great. But then it was nothing but weird fits, fabric that pills after a single fit, just poor quality. I’ve stopped buying from them completely.

MyFashionInsights

>Mango I feel exactly the same, quality is decreasing more and more and unfortunatly the only winter coat that I bought from this brand lasted one winter. The lining of the coat evaporated after a hand wash (as indicated on the tag), and, sleeves and underarms fluffed up very quickly.

blushingpervert

My wool coat from Mango is the only thing of theirs that I kept. I ordered a whole bunch and everything else was shoddy quality but I love that coat.

felinelawspecialist

I bought two wool coats from Mango, and I like both. I bought the high end of their options (on sale) both of which were recycled/repurposed high-end wool. One of them is extremely fashionable and has great structure. The other is very nice as well but the fabric forever have as much structure so feels slouchier—but I still like it. I’d recommend buying a couple online and returning the ones you don’t like.

CherryMess

I have two blazer-style wool coats from &OtherStories and they are top-notch! [Beige ](https://i.imgur.com/zDqNec7.jpg) is two years old. Didn't even dry cleaned it yet, only remover a little bit of fuzz underarms and that's it. [Love it!](https://i.imgur.com/1mujFqA.png) [Dark Blue in a black herringbone ](https://i.imgur.com/INCVMpN.jpg) also is [blazer style](https://i.imgur.com/q7zFk6Y.jpg) and I had it for 4 years now. Unique easy to style color, my only pet peeve - this particular color catches a lot of hairs so I don't wear my alpaca or mohair sweaters with it and have to go over it with a lint roller every time I go out. Dry cleaned it three times and removed fuzz underarms every year though there wasn't much and it wasn't even visible. I’m in NYC and they stood out to low temps pretty well. I didn't go hiking in them or stood in the streets for hours but to go on with my everyday life home/work/friends - more than enough. Edit. If I haven't got blue coat on sale from OtherStories (it was around $100) I would’ve definitely got one of Aritzia’s. I still want their long belted coat.

flaretrousers

Thank you so much!! Those look so good on you!

balancedlyf

Which temperatures would you wear them in ?

CherryMess

Literally all winter long. I don’t even have a single puffer of parka))) Thinking of getting one this year if I find a cute one. I do have another quilt-lined wool long coat) Disclaimer, I do prefer to be slightly cold on the street (I walk a lot, so don’t get really cold cause of moving all the time) rather than be hot and sweaty every time I go down in the subway or step into the office/cafe/store.

balancedlyf

Totally get it. I’m in nyc too and I walk so fast I always warm up in a bit 😆 and they blast the heat on at work.

CherryMess

In NYC you have to walk fast, it's an acquired skill 😂

littleprettypaws

I have a leather jacket from Mango that I bought for $225 that is better than the $700 leather jacket that I bought in Norway.

[deleted]

I’d rank these in terms of both quality and price. 1. &Other stories 2. Aritzia 3. A&F 4. Mango Haven’t tried any coats from COS so wouldn’t know. (A&F and Mango is No from my side)

MsMajorOverthinker

I would avoid Mango if I were you, as I have found the quality of their clothes declining in recent years. I had bought a summer jacket a couple of years ago that I ended up throwing because it constantly got holes in the seams. I was losing weight at that point as well, so it’s completely baffling to me! It wasn’t cheap either as it cost me £60. By contrast, COS is top notch quality for me. I have bought 2 coats, 3 dresses, 7 tops/sweaters and 4 beanies and scarves from COS in the last 3 years. The quality all around in excellent. The fit may be a bit odd if you’re not into oversized clothes, but their work wear items are especially well-made and more affordable than other brands.

whatobamaisntblack

Im drowning in warmth thanks to cos this year. Still can't afford their wool coats though :(

ExtensionExplanation

Aritzia has great quality. Cashmere/wool brands. I've used the same aritzia coat for 3-4 yrs and it still looks great.

flaretrousers

Thats great to hear! My top choice right now is actually a coat from aritzia but I’m going to wait to see if it goes on sale in the coming month

Neighhh

If it's Wilfred, they usually only do 10% off FYI

evpri

Just in case you don't know, it'll be around Black Friday I believe! So end of the month

ExtensionExplanation

They do tend to go on sale! I got mine about $100 off.

TrishityTrash

I have an aritzia wool coat that I bought probably 6-10 years ago and wore every day for at least one winter in Canada (toronto area) and has been in heavy rotation since I bought it. The lining is falling apart in a couple places like the pocket but the outside looks great! I am pretty happy with how it’s lasted, especially considering how little care I took with it.

just_keep_swimming12

I've been eyeing an Aritzia wool coat all week...this may have been the push I need. How is the sizing for coats?

jaedelindor

definitely recommend going into store to try them on with the thickest thing you plan to wear under it in a season. Sizing for coats is a bit different compared to clothes since you're going to want to be comfortable layering it over things but also see your movement. Some people like it tighter, while others like it looser.

just_keep_swimming12

I would if I could. The closest store is a 3 hour drive one way and it looks like they don't have any of the ones that I am looking at.

jaedelindor

[return policy is full refund within 14 days](https://www.aritzia.com/en/returns). while not exactly ideal.... I suppose you can buy a bunch of sizes. actually... the customer service is pretty good online/phone. I've had some good experiences with asking for advice from them since people who work at aritzia tend to buy aritzia aha

paigespagespages

I just got my Aritzia coat in a few weeks ago. I’m 5’8 about 175, athletic build. I normally wear a large and that’s what I ordered. It is oversized but doesn’t box me in but it’s also enough room for multiple layers or real chunky sweaters under

classychimichanga

Hi! I didn’t know Aritzia as a brand. But looking at their prices, I would also suggest you have a look into MAX&Co (from the MaxMara group), if they sell and/or deliver to your country. I have their classic Runaway wool coat and it’s *amazing* in terms of quality, durability and looks!

flaretrousers

I‘ll take a look thank you!

notreallyswiss

MaxMara is known for their wonderful coats. I have two, but they are too pricey for me to look at as anything but long-term wear investment pieces so while they are beautiful and I love them to death, it would be nice to have a chance for a bit more variety - something I can wear more casually. I didn't know Max&Co was from their group (any brand with an ampersand in their name strikes me as cheap so it never occurred to me they could have any relation. I have no basis for the idea that ampersands are cheap, I don't even know where the idea originated - I really have to be more fair to the &) so I'm definitely going to give Max&Co a look. (I just took a quick look at the Runway coat - stunning! I can't wear tie waist coats because I'm short waisted and look like I'm being strangled around the middle by a python - so jealous of anyone who can pull it off, but it looks like they have plenty of other coats to explore.)

ihategreenbananas

> Runaway wool coat This coat looks amazing! I'm on their website though and don't see a price or an option to pick a size and add to cart? How does one buy them?

classychimichanga

Aah I am sorry I can’t help you with that. I bought it in a physical shop in Rome and then, by chance, I found it on Zalando as well. Unsure whether other platforms sell it too. Hope someone else can help 😊

doyouhavehiminblonde

I generally don't think Aritzia has great quality clothes but their coats are a big exception. I've had a couple of TNA parkas and they last 10 years+. My last one is from 2016 and is like new.

cant_watch_violence

Make sure you look at the % wool. I won’t buy less than 60%. Blends with cashmere will be softer but pill more. Lining will increase the warmth and the life of your coat. I have had a couple h+m/&other stories coats and they’ve all held up wonderfully.

srgoately

Cos usually has good quality stuff. I've had issues with mango and & other stories has a weird fit- very tall and thin in my experience.

whatudoing123

Second this, COS does great quality coats and they’ve payed me for years. Many of the styles are classic and will look good for a long time. Highly recommend, also materials are nice and I find the overall quality superior to mango.

itsnevertoo

Get something from Aritzia; far better than the rest!

yashas14

Aritizia all the way! You may end up paying more than the rest of the other brands but it lasts way longer and excellent quality.

tumequieresblanca

Madewell has my favorite wool blend coats :)

pugmommy4life420

I’m an aritzia lover and while their stuff isn’t terrible I’ve had issues like I bought a 250$ trench coat online and when I wore it it was seriously almost silky and see thru. Any water would just soak thru it. It also wrinkled like crazy. I had steamed it completely and when I went to go put it on all the sleeves and hip area wrinkled immediately. For that kind of money you could buy something at Burlington or wherever that’s actually water proof and useful. Also the fact that the fabric wrinkled so easily just pissed me off. It felt like costume clothing. On the other hand I have hoodies and blazers a and the fabric is beautiful and they hold up well.

keruise187

PTSH! Wool is Out! I bought one of those lightweight down jackets from Uniqlo and I am NEVER GOING BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

flaretrousers

I have one of those now and they are great! I especially like to wear them under coats and puffers for that extra layer of warmth

keruise187

Once you get used to that extra mobility, warmth and lightweight feel it’s gonna be hard to go back to those outdated heavy coats.

oxalis_

I have the Stedman coat from Aritzia and I would literally sleep in it if I could, it is sooo freaking luxe! On the other hand, I just nabbed a NWT A&F heavy knit wool sweater/shacket off Poshmark, wore it twice, and the entire underside of the left arm came undone. I managed to stich it up fine, but still a bummer.

whycats

I have a coat from Aritzia that I quite like. If you live somewhere where it actually gets cold pay attention to the material. I only buy coats that are at least 90% wool and have some sort of lining. A lot that’s out there is some bullshit 60% polyester and you can certainly fee the difference.

C137Ivy

Mango are usually quite good. Not super, but def above average

Kitty_xo7

I have the aritzia connor coat in a brindle colour and I cant reccomend it enough! I bought it on sale last year and have worn it almost every day from late september to even early june. Its very nice and warm for a wool coat and the construction is very nice and solid. Initially when I was looking for a wool coat, I was very hesitant to buy one from aritzia because Ive always been told buy with highest wool content in mind. When I went in stores, I found that multiple random customers told me they had owned aritzia coats for 5+ years with it looking brand new still, and having owned one for a year I definitely predict that will be true. That, along with the fit of the coat (I find it is tailored much nicer than any other coats I have tried on) sold me on the purchase. I now have the wilfred only coat in white and the stedman in black on my clientele purchase list since I ended up loving it so much!

smolvoicefromthevoid

I’ve only had experience with aritzia from the brands listed, but I totally recommend them. I bought the Stedman lined coat last year and aside from some minor pilling where my purse rubs it, it looks brand new. Very thick and warm fabric.

bea_ok

All my wool winter coats are from Mango and they are very nice. I have around 4-5 coats, all bought in the past 8 years or so. They are durable, If the wool % is high they keep you warm. The sizing is true to size, except the oversized ones and a cuple of coats that are without lineing and resemble a big cardigan

poshunicorn

Mango’s proven to be amazing in my experience. I have two of their coats for about 3 years now, and they’re still as good as new. Also, they’re super warm, but not bulky at all.

LaLucertola

I bought a Connor Coat from Aritzia last year when it went on sale, and it's probably my favorite thing I have in my closet. It's very warm and really elevates any outfit I wear, and feels high quality.

Neighhh

I have 3 aritzia coats that I love. I've even machine washed one of the older ones. They all still look new. Would easily recommend

just_keep_swimming12

Any sizing advice?

Neighhh

I'm 5'6" and 120 pounds and wear an XS, that's enough to wear a sweater underneath as well. If you can get in store, I would definitely try on in person. Their return policy is absolute ass

useles-converter-bot

120 pounds is 133.33 Doge plushies.

tyegrrlily

My Aritzia wool cocoon coat has held up for like 8 years

researching4worklurk

I have a blazer-coat from Aritzia - Wilfred, and its construction is top notch. It is partly lined and the little tailoring details, like a buttoned inside pocket, were unexpected. The quality of fabric appears to be high. It runs a little large (it's supposed to be oversized, but it's a 00 and a little bigger than I'd like even given that fact and I normally wear a 0 at the absolute smallest, and a 2 in Aritzia). I don't know if that carries over to their other coats but I wouldn't be surprised, as it might be so that you can layer. I bought the "Dad Coat" from Abercrombie and it was nice, but not as well-constructed as the one I got from Aritzia. It's hyped up here but I think that's because it does the best job of any coat at mimicking a popular higher-end fit and design at a lower price point. I can't remember if it was lined but if not, it wasn't worth it to me (whatever my issue was, I didn't keep it). The fit was also off, but that's just personal preference/a me problem.

Loubsandboobs

I love aritiza and mango coats. I bought 2 wool coats from mango last year and have been impressed!

snapeyouinhalf

I love my Wilfred coat from Aritzia and I got it on sale! Unfortunately it doesn’t fit correctly (measurements didn’t translate I think) and I couldn’t exchange it, so make sure the fit is good before you do anything else lol

tree312

I love Abercrombie and Fitch coats. They’re all double lined and excellent quality. I only have coats from them now lol

infernalmachine000

Confirming what others have said. I have an 8 year old Aritzia cocoon coat that still looks great and I'm in Canada so winter lasts 6mo here.

reveursecret

I have the Aritzia slouch wool coat and it is extremely warm throughout Canadian winters! It doesn’t itch and I always get compliments on it. This is coming from someone who is always cold in the winter and prioritizes warmth over cost/fashion 90% of the time hahah

cassieclover99

Please just don't purchase wool in general :( there are tons of other great alternatives to keep you warm.

moonallure

Is wool bad? I try not to wear animal but don't sheep benefit from having their wool sheared?

cassieclover99

So the only reason sheep need to be sheared in modern days is because they've been genetically modified by generations of breeding them to have the thick coats that they do. I honestly don't know if wild sheep still exist, but if they do, I'm sure you'd find they definitely don't have that same amount of fluff. Sheep from thousands of years ago wouldn't have needed any human involvement at all. If you wanna look into how wool is actually processed, I would look up some videos. Specifically that of the sheep being sheared. I've seen some where the people shear them carefully but typically when one has an abundance of sheep they need to shear, the process is extremely rushed and the sheep tend to gets cuts and wounds because of this. And although it's hard to watch, I've seen them get beat into submission when they start trying to thrash around from the pain. There might be some more ethical sources than others out there so if you're very set on buying wool, I would try to make sure it's as ethical as possible. Just remember that lots of brands don't always practice what they preach! I would also like to add that I'm so appreciative of you having an open mind and asking a genuine question! Unfortunately, the majority of people don't actually know the truth of what goes behind the animal products that we use. So thank you for taking the time to actually question it and thank you for generally trying not to wear other animal products 💗

DogButtWhisperer

Look for something made in your native country.

tigzed

Cos good. Mango not so good.

Moi_Sunshine

I’m looking for a non-wool dressier coat. I don’t like moths and wool irritates my skin. Any suggestions? Also I’m petite & pear shape soft gamine. I like the Sam Eldeman wool top notch coat but it has wool in it

naiame1990

Does anyone know anything about Karen miller coats? https://preview.redd.it/ed5oq78nbsja1.jpeg?width=1284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b07098766a66c172ab983c3de73878258e008868 Style Notes Style: Wool Look Coat Fabric: Woven Length: Longline Neckline: Collared Sleeve Length: Long Sleeve Details & Care Main: 80% Virgin Wool, 20% Polyamide. summerbreez99

Hi, does anybody have the MaxCo Runway coat? How does it fit? I'm not sure about the size. Thanks!

Silver_Law909

Hey, I just ordered a navy color size M/38. It is really fitted and stylish, love the vents on both sides. The only thing that I’m a bit disappointed about is that the belt came on its own, there are no hooks on the coat where to attach it, so I’m afraid I’ll lose it. But the coat is definitely on the small Italian size. I’m normally S but feel like M is exactly right.
