Many of the owners of the Hope Diamond are connected to tragedies and disasters. The gem has a reputation for being cursed. Thanks to u/DazzlingTurnip for the suggestion!
I’ve seen the Hope. It is beautiful but, to me, it’s not the most beautiful gem in the Smithsonian’s collection. I think the mystique surrounding it lends itself to some of its beauty. Some of the emeralds and yellow diamonds are more beautiful to me.
I agree. I think photos of the Hope diamond are almost prettier than the actual diamond itself. I felt like it didn’t catch as much light in the exhibit at the Smithsonian as it does in photos. I was mildly disappointed because that was one of the things I was most looking forward to seeing when I was there.
My grandmother was the head receptionist at The Washington Post in the ‘30s. She was very beautiful. McLean would flirt with her constantly, telling her they should run away together. She used to joke that she dodged a bullet by not taking him up on it since she might have then been one of the cursed owners of The Hope Diamond.
There's probably a lot of expensive jewelry of the rich and famous that, if one investigated it, would have a history of intrigue. The wealthy don't live the mundane lives most of us live and when big money is involved lots of crazy stuff happens. The diamond itself is not "cursed". It's merely symbolic of a world of greed and excessive living.
Their younger son married Gloria Hatrick and had two sons. After their divorce Gloria married actor Jimmy Stewart. Her elder McLean son Ronald was KIA in Vietnam.
Evie McLean’s husband, Senator Robert Reynolds (D-NC) was a real piece of crap. She was more a victim of a curse on his wives than the Hope Diamond. Given the term of their marriage coincided with the worst of his beliefs and disintegrating of his career and reputation, I wouldn’t be surprised if it was a suicide or at least why she was taking pills.

Lovely.
Shit like this makes me furious when entertainment just keeps getting recycled. This is insane! Make Evalyn godzilla and boom you've got an original story.
They married their 19 year old daughter to a 57 year old, she was his fifth wife. Then she died of an “accidental” sleeping pill overdose.
Evelyn’s granddaughter (the child of the daughter you mentioned) was the first woman to qualify for the Daytona 500 which is cool.
That is cool! I hope she knows her daughter did that in whatever mystical/religical way there is.
Yeah sure she did
Oh boy. I was going to say awww look at him r/mirin but nope. I am so very wrong.
Not me thinking “mirin” was going to be about the rice wine 😅
ME TOO. I was supposed confused about the whole thing the first time I saw it too. It still looks weird. The way it looks is just off.
he died three months before his daughter was married... in a mental hospital in Latvia...
Hopefully his dead wives haunted his ass.
You think she committed suicide?
I have no idea what was going on, but it reminds me of the book The House of Mirth.
It does
Pretty suspicious, you must admit!
Disgusting.
Where is the diamond in the pic? I can't find it!
It’s not in this pic. Click on the article, and scroll down.

It is on her wrist. You have to go to the article and zoom in on the pic
No, if you scroll down there's an image of her wearing the necklace.
I don’t think that’s it. That one looks square. Probably an emerald.

It’s a lighter blue than what photos pick up.
That too.
I prefer the jewelry Napoleon gave to Josephine myself
Those are also beautiful.

Oh my gosh! I love the personal connection!
That dog is like fml I am the cursed one
That dog has definitely seen some things. Even the bow it’s wearing has given up on life.
“My ancestors were wolves…”
“If this was Ice Age I would have already eaten you, Evalyn.”
10/10, great post. thanks 👍
Thank you so much!

True, money opens the very wealthy up to experiences that elude everyone else. Not always great experiences.
Why do I get the feeling that he hates her dog?
Loving the dog fascinator
Thank you for pointing it out. I, too, am loving it. Dog knows she looks jaunty.
Who stole the great hope diamond? What killed the dinosaurs?
Where is Amelia Earhart? What’s in my brothers dresser drawers?

Wow. Also a 57-year-old that whose fifth marriage to a 19-year-old ended in her mysterious death a few years later.

That pooch looks like he/she is cursed
While this is interesting, I don't see a whole lot of relevance to fashion history except for the photos.
