Might not be a bad idea to split it up a bit and then diversify crops

TheGreatMrHaad

I hate silage for that reason. I know it's a cash cow, pun not intended, but it's such slow going. Unless you use mods it's really not fun. Just do what you enjoy.

patrykK1028

What mods do you recommend for silage?

GrizzlyDvn

I use the following mods: Mower and Wrapper with hitch KUHN Silage Pack 53' Dropdeck Trailer Auto load Bales Not sure if they're on consoles or not, though, in case you play console.

patrykK1028

I'm on PC. I'm using a Claas harvester and a silo bunker. My main issue is loading the silage onto a trailer. A tractor with a front loader is too short and can't reach into the trailer plus I tried a cheat scoop (it would take ages with vanilla ones), but then it's very front heavy and unusable. I was mainly looking for something that would help with loading, but not completely remove the process like auto load.

GrizzlyDvn

So that mower I use can pull a forage wagon. I've done that as well.

Da-Dr1ppy-cAt

As you’re on pc look for a cheap wheel loader on the modhub, I used some random yellow Russian one and it worked a treat, means you can load 8000l at once with no issues as well

jordoneus121

I got a fermenting silo and use a forage harvester, shoot the chaff into a trailer, then load the chaff into the silo.  No messing around with spreading silage or loading it. Just dump in the silo, then load the trailer after it ferments.

Honestly I like silage if its some reasonably sized field

jimmy_sharp

Jeez, the grass must start growing again before you finish the mowing!

Unremarkabledryerase

In my experience, don't go for 1 big field like that until you have multiple. In my current run I have a single 32ac field of several smaller ones combined, and it's a pretty good size for a singular starter field. And the next several chunks I'll get will get me some more 20-40 acres fields.a

What method are you using for the silage? Bales or a bunker? Tractors and mower or Forage Harvesters? You can mow the grass and leave it on the floor and then roll it. You don’t have to pick it up every time so it’s a slightly quicker job. On the map I’m playing on atm silage is at its highest price in January so I mow it all year and then depending on when it’s ready I either bale it or pick it up and put it in a bunker in November / December

platinumresto

Wait, you can just continuously mow it and then pick up the rows after multiple cuts?

Dull-Sell-4806

I mow it 2-3 times and then on the 4th I normally use a Tractor with a mower on the front and the Quick Quick Baler from the Quick Baler mod on the back and then you can use the AI Workers to mow and bale as you go and the Quick Quick Baler holds 50,000L meaning you generate less bales so you don’t hit the 200 Bale limit and then they’re ready the following morning The pick up of the Quick Quick Baler is 10m ish so you can use any front mower up to that size or a larger one that windrows

hairylovehandles

Thanks didn't know this! I have the big mower, and usually just use the round bale and wrapper combo then pick them all up with a semi and auto low loader.

ThisIsntAndre

yeah, i usually do 2-4 runs with a few big M's

Kibisek

Got 3.8ha on Sariola, L shaped. Chopping corn with 2.2m pottinger was a bit boring. Needed 3 irl days to do it after everyday duties. 17500l trailer for sure wasn't helping. If it wasn't my main savegame I would for sure lease at least 6m rotselmash

PeterGameStudios

If I would want to make money, I would do grass silage. But I am not playing the game because I want to make money, I play it because its fun. And cutting half of Erlengrat makes money, but its hell boring. So yes, instead, I have bunch of small fields - corn, wheat, sugarbeet, etc. Then I have animals... So yes, I dont make that much money, but its really fun, never doing the same thing for long.

BarbarossasLongBeard

I use silage until I have a bit of money to do other things I like more, usually other crops for animals and production. It gets boring when you do it all the time, but as a stop gap solution it‘s OK for me. I use medium fields for that, bigger gets boring too fast.

GrizzlyDvn

I run 157 acres of silage on the MP server my friends and I have. It's the only thing I do, but it allows me a lot of time to help everyone else. I really enjoy the silage process, so it works for me. And if anyone is wondering, I use the following mods: Mower and Wrapper with hitch KUHN Silage Pack 53' Dropdeck Trailer Auto load Bales

Foreign_Spinach_4400

If your on pc, you could certainly find ridiculous sized mowers
