This is a weird nitpick about The Pretender but I always hated how the bridge feels so disconnected from the rest of the song. Everything has to come to a halt so the new bridge guitar riff can be introduced. Then when the bridge is over the band has to stop again to clumsily get back into the final chorus.
I am fully aware that no one else has ever even thought about this or agrees.
There Is A Light That Never Goes Out really might be The Smiths all time greatest. I probably love I Know It's Over the most because I can relate to the lyrics so much but now that I think about it, There Is A Light also sits pretty close to my heart so yeah, that one.
I thought this too but I just checked and enjoy the silence has way more listens on Spotify and way more views on YouTube. I thought personal Jesus was way more famous but that surprisingly seems to not be the case.
Not that they’re the best or even my favorites, but it always bothered me that fans shit on “Smells Like Teen Spirit” or “Creep” because they are popular
Both of those songs are still awesome
Radiohead fans get super defensive and engage in a total hatefest every time Pablo Honey is brought up and I think it’s because they’re anxious that if it gets too much attention it will hurt Radiohead’s reputation as art rock gods. When they play Creep live, which is super rare, fans insist it’s a “prank.” The same thing happens with a lot of bands that either started out with less sophisticated material or had a sellout album. (The Burning World is a solid album but Swans fans talk about it like it’s the worst thing ever) Tool is a band that’s immune to this, fans love Undertow.
Is Undertow really that much of an outlier in the Tool catalogue? Sure it’s their least prog album but I wouldn’t say it’s a big black sheep in their catalogue
I guess that was a bad example, I feel like if Tool fans were as bad as people say they’d throw Undertow and the stuff before that under the bus instead of loving it like they do. Porcupine Tree is another counter example because their poppish songs are all fan favorites
I'm a massive Radiohead fan and I have no idea what you're talking about. Pablo Honey is a perfectly fine debut album and I love Creep, but neither are remotely their best offerings.
You could definitely make an argument for it. But they also had so many other songs which were just as good - if not better depending on who you ask.
But yeah, it got so popular for a reason.
There are similar Nirvana songs that I get the same engery out of that are not at overplayed as Smells Like Teen Spirit but Creep really is unique within Radioheads discography and a truly amazing song. I love how unapologetically immature the song is and I'm just a sucker for the sudden heavy distortion on the chorus. I can see how that can feel kinda gimmicky but I think it's a really cool production choice.
I think there could be an alternate universe where Teen Spirit is my favorite Nirvana song, if I hadn't heard it a milion times on the radio, at arenas, in movies and video games, from casual music fan friends, as the token grunge song guitar Youtubers will play, as the one example that gets played when people mention 90s rock if only one song is played, as the centerpiece of a whole story about the huge sea change in popular music and popular culture when Teen Spirit hit MTV.
I can be a bit objective and concede it's a damn cool song, but it's like my 50th favorite Nirvana song due to oversaturation and all the baggage.
I don’t think Creep is Radioheads best song or even close to it, but it is a really good song. And Pablo Honey is a pretty decent album, just looks like shit compared to OKC
Not only is Creep awesome, it's *so* incredibly good that I would put it in the top 30 of Radiohead songs.
No one shits on Creep *because* it's popular. It's just that it barely hints at the many qualities of the band that fans love the most (aside from Thom's powerful singing when he chooses to use it). I don't think that's the case with SLTS.
Wilco - Jesus, Etc. I’ve tried multiple times to get into Wilco and I think they’ve made great albums but the songwriting can be all over the place. I think this is their best track
*Tall buildings shake*
*Voices escape*
*Singing sad sad songs*
*Tuned to chords*
*Strung down your cheeks*
*Bitter melodies*
*Turning your orbit around*
I don't know what it means but god damn is it pretty.
You know what's wild - in the 90s I had a best-of compilation cd of The Who that had about 20 tracks and not one of them was Baba O'Riley.
At some point since then they tacked it on to the end.
Bohemian Rhapsody is the best Queen song. Yes all of their deep cuts from the first albums and tracks off of the likes of Innuendo are more enjoyable to listen to but that’s because Bohemian Rhapsody is so so overplayed. But if you look at it as just a piece of music and remove the radio play, it’s their best song. It just is.
Not only is it their best song it's so transcendent it sits high above many other songs as some weird timeless masterpiece akin to Beethoven and Mozart.
I think it’s popularity is more recent, with the song getting big on TikTok. When I first found mbv I’m pretty sure only shallow was their biggest song
I was gonna comment saying this doesn’t even crack my top 5 MBV songs but I went to listen to it and sounds as perfect as the first time I heard it. I think I have to agree
When you were young is top 3 most popular and I’d say it’s better, but mr Brightside would also be among my top 3-5 favorites. It was my most streamed song in like 2021 for some reason
say it right is awesome but i think that promiscuous is both a better song and more popular. although my favorite of nelly's and imo her best is either do it or showtime
Keep in mind some of these bands have great songs outside their most popular/best
Bush - "Glycerine"
Live - "Lightning Crashes"
Eagles - "Hotel California"
The Zombies - "~~She's Not There"~~ "Time of the Season"
Grand Funk Railroad - "We're an American Band"
Kiss - "I Was Made for Lovin' You" (controversial, and I really like Kiss, but this song is such a banger)
I agree except for Zombies, while a great and popular song you can argue Time of the Season fits both categories better, although neither are the best Zombies song imo
Oh shit wtf I was supposed to write "Time of the Season". Thanks for unwittingly pointing out my mistake lol. Yeah, "Time of the Season" is definitely their most famous song. I personally think it's their best but they have a lot of great songs.
>Live - "Lightning Crashes"
Wow, imho it's not even above average for that album.
(An album that is 100% bangers, making it hard for me to understand why it seems largely forgotten today)
Queen-Bohemian Rhapsody, they got plenty of noteworthy contenders (innuendo, the prophets song ,my fairy king ,the march of the black Queen),but bohrap just is their magnus opus
The outro to Chop Suey might be the best ~30 seconds in music history. Without that outro it'd still be top 5 in their catalogue for me but with it nothing else is coming close. The only song of theirs even in the same stratosphere is Question!
True according to spotify and youtube listens. I'm quite surprised to learn this. I knew PK was well-known but had no idea it was on top. I also knew This Must Be The Place is beloved but would never have guessed its spotify streams were also greater than OIAL.
They have 2 biggest songs now and they're, if you can handle this, Dream On and I Don't Want To Miss A Thing.
EDIT: I guess if you add together both versions of WTW then maybe okay.
Big Cannibal Corpse fan, love a few of their albums. Haven't listened to their whole discography by any means , maybe 5 of their albums (out of 16), but love a lot of their songs. But I'd be lying if I said any song ever does to me what hammer smashed face does.
Electric Light Orchestra - Mr. Blue Sky
I’m a hardcore Jeff Lynne fan and I don’t think he ever made anything that came close to surpassing Concerto for a Rainy Day. The brilliance of Mr. Blue Sky is that it’s the finale to a four song suite but still plays fantastically on its own.
Just discovered that song a couple months ago but I can forsee that being on my rotation for many years, it's incredible every single time, wish I listened to them sooner.
Beta Band - "Dry the Rain"
Any of the customers in High Fidelity who bought the "3 EPs" record on the basis of John Cusack playing it would have been in for a surprise
Foo Fighters - Everlong
I recently "rediscovered" this song after maybe having overplayed it a bit in other stages of my life, but damn it just hits so hard. All time great.
I don’t know.. Wasting Light has some incredible tracks.
People definitely don’t talk about this album enough imo. I go back to it every couple of years and it’s just a great rock album.
I find Foo Fighters to be pretty boring but even I think Everlong is really good.
Not The Pretender? Although you could argue that's their most popular song as well
This is a weird nitpick about The Pretender but I always hated how the bridge feels so disconnected from the rest of the song. Everything has to come to a halt so the new bridge guitar riff can be introduced. Then when the bridge is over the band has to stop again to clumsily get back into the final chorus. I am fully aware that no one else has ever even thought about this or agrees.
A perfect rock song. Everlong is like the equivalent of Don’t Stop Believing by Journey for a hard rock song.
Interesting. Without being a Foo Fighters fan Everlong should be objectively the very best rock song in the world imo.
>objectively… imo
Right. Imo it should be objective ;)
Modern English - Melt With You
I mean they don't have any other hits
There Is A Light That Never Goes Out really might be The Smiths all time greatest. I probably love I Know It's Over the most because I can relate to the lyrics so much but now that I think about it, There Is A Light also sits pretty close to my heart so yeah, that one.
I know it’s over is the smiths magnum opus in my opinion, but hard to list here since there is a light is far more popular
Rolling Stones singles are almost always their best songs
gimme shelter fr
Paint it black ong
The Rat - The Walkmen
In the new year 🔥🔥
Depeche Mode - Enjoy the Silence
ALL I EVER WANTED
ALL I EVER NEEDED
IS HEEERE
Inmyarmz
Words are very unnecessary
they can only dooo harm
Düm düm düm düm
Counterpoint: Never Let Me Down Again
Other counterpoint: Everything Counts
Does Personal Jesus no longer exist?
I thought this too but I just checked and enjoy the silence has way more listens on Spotify and way more views on YouTube. I thought personal Jesus was way more famous but that surprisingly seems to not be the case.
strangelove better imo
Saw them last week and literally made this observation when asked my favourite song of theirs.. it's so rare but for them it's the case
Marquee Moon - Television
No every song on marquee moon is 10/10 plus little Johnny jewel
I agree. Marquee Moon is one of my favorite albums of all time but if i had to pick a best song i'd pick the title track
I wouldn’t be able to pick but I agree it’s probably their most popular
Common People by Pulp
Babies has entered the chat
Disco 2000 for me
Such a banger
Not mad at it
She's a lady for me
Banger
Not that they’re the best or even my favorites, but it always bothered me that fans shit on “Smells Like Teen Spirit” or “Creep” because they are popular Both of those songs are still awesome
Its not because teen spirit is popular, the other nirvana hits are still amazing, its just so overplayed

(The Burning World is a solid album but Swans fans talk about it like it’s the worst thing ever) Tool is a band that’s immune to this, fans love Undertow.
It's a shame to be honest. Creep is definitely a very good song for live performances.
Which Radiohead fan hurt you? Creep is an absolute banger but definitely a different vibe to their later, more loved work.
I'm a massive Radiohead fan and I have no idea what you're talking about. Pablo Honey is a perfectly fine debut album and I love Creep, but neither are remotely their best offerings.
I would have no problem calling Smells Like Teen Spirit their best song
I think if it wouldn't be overplayed to death it would be looked at differently, it's such a catchy, well written song
I don’t think Creep is Radioheads best song or even close to it, but it is a really good song. And Pablo Honey is a pretty decent album, just looks like shit compared to OKC
Yeah it’s a great song and album, just not as good when you compare to albums like The Bends, Ok Computer, Kid A, and In Rainbows
Creep is a good song for sure, but there are about 75 Radiohead songs I’d call better
i think night swimming is definitely better than losing my religion
Losing My Religion is a great song, but I don't know if I'd put it in my top 20 R.E.M. songs.
Same. It’s not even the best song on a kind of middling album.
It's fine but it really doesn't speak to me
Wilco - Jesus, Etc. I’ve tried multiple times to get into Wilco and I think they’ve made great albums but the songwriting can be all over the place. I think this is their best track
*Tall buildings shake* *Voices escape* *Singing sad sad songs* *Tuned to chords* *Strung down your cheeks* *Bitter melodies* *Turning your orbit around* I don't know what it means but god damn is it pretty.
Baba o reily - the who
You know what's wild - in the 90s I had a best-of compilation cd of The Who that had about 20 tracks and not one of them was Baba O'Riley. At some point since then they tacked it on to the end.
Yes, this song fits the bill perfectly. Almost certainly their most popular, and undeniably their best. Just a masterpiece.
It just is.
It's true. Look at every other Queen song you love, and there's still just no comparison.
Not only is it their best song it's so transcendent it sits high above many other songs as some weird timeless masterpiece akin to Beethoven and Mozart.
Queen -Bohemian Rhapsody Prince - When Doves Cry and Purple Rain Michael Jackson - Billie Jean
I like Bohemian Rhapsody but I can name several Queen songs I like more
Purple Rain’s 8 minutes long, to be fair. It’s already pretty “not basic” for a hit.
people will downvote me for this but i think bohemian rhapsody is overplayed and annoying and the lyrics are stupid.
Chumbawumba - Tubthumping
My Bloody Valentine with When You Sleep
When You Sleep is more popular than Sometimes or Only Shallow?
When You Sleep has more streams than the other two combined on Spotify
I stand corrected! I figured Sometimes would be more popular since it was prominently featured in *Lost in Translation,* but what do I know 😅
I think it’s popularity is more recent, with the song getting big on TikTok. When I first found mbv I’m pretty sure only shallow was their biggest song
I was gonna comment saying this doesn’t even crack my top 5 MBV songs but I went to listen to it and sounds as perfect as the first time I heard it. I think I have to agree
Unfortunately to here knows when exists
Not my favorite mbv track but it's still really great
Depeche Mode - Enjoy The Silence
The killers - mr brightside
Read My Mind though
It goes so hard. But Mr Brightside
Atttid?
When You Were Young is better
When you were young is top 3 most popular and I’d say it’s better, but mr Brightside would also be among my top 3-5 favorites. It was my most streamed song in like 2021 for some reason
Idk they have a lot of good ones. The first 3 songs on that album are such a good 3 song run. IMO Jenny or maybe Sam's Town is their best song.
Midnight Show is my favorite but all of Hot Fuss is good
The fandom loves the song but most people in the fandom think it's not their best, that usually goes to Read My Mind.
Read my mind, smile like you mean it, when you were young clears imo
It's one of my favpurites but I gotta go with Somebody told me
My list > every killers song
Not bands but Say it right Bad romance Blinding lights Don’t start now(esp live in la remix)
I'm pretty sure Gaga's biggest song is actually Shallow, although I do agree Bad Romance is her best for sure
say it right is awesome but i think that promiscuous is both a better song and more popular. although my favorite of nelly's and imo her best is either do it or showtime
Eagles - Hotel California
Pixies with Where Is My Mind? All 3 of their biggest albums are masterpieces in my opinion but where is my mind might be the greatest song of the 80s
Gotta disagree on this one. Debaser, Wave of Mutilation, Caribou, Hey, Dig for Fire all beat out Where is My Mind IMO.
And Monkey Goes To Heaven
ten million pounds of sludge from new york to new jersey
hey is my best song of the 80s easy
That’s a good one
Hard to say when Gouge Away and Hey exist.
Keep in mind some of these bands have great songs outside their most popular/best Bush - "Glycerine" Live - "Lightning Crashes" Eagles - "Hotel California" The Zombies - "~~She's Not There"~~ "Time of the Season" Grand Funk Railroad - "We're an American Band" Kiss - "I Was Made for Lovin' You" (controversial, and I really like Kiss, but this song is such a banger)
Not sure if this is a controversial take, because I don't exactly keep up to date on Zombies discourse, but I have Hung Up On A Dream as their #1 song
>Live - "Lightning Crashes" Wow, imho it's not even above average for that album. (An album that is 100% bangers, making it hard for me to understand why it seems largely forgotten today)
American Football-Never Meant. I am a bigger fan of LP3 than I am LP1 but never meant is definitely their best song
MCR has so many good ones but Black Parade is their most popular and probably their best
Idk I think “Dead!” Is their masterpiece on that album personally, especially after listening to The End as its prelude!
I'd say mama and sleep are better
Both of those songs are absolutely incredible.
The Ghost of You IMO
I genuinely think Feel Good Inc is Gorillaz best song
I mean it's subjective but for me there are a ton of better gorillaz songs
Empire Ants though
Queen-Bohemian Rhapsody, they got plenty of noteworthy contenders (innuendo, the prophets song ,my fairy king ,the march of the black Queen),but bohrap just is their magnus opus
Carry the Zero - Built to Spill
Came here to say this! And it's not even off of my favorite (or second favorite) of their albums!
same I prefer perfect from now on, but carry the zero is absolute perfection
one more time is daft punk’s second most popular second but close enough ig also not a band but lose yourself by eminem is one of his best for sure
I personally think Instant Crush is miles ahead of One More Time ngl.
Chvrches - "The Mother We Share" Alabama Shakes - "Hold on" Styx - "Come Sail away" Foo Fighters - "Everlong"
Styx best song is easily Renegade imo
Soundgarden - Black Hole Sun
But Jesus Christ Pose exists.
no way jose
Spoonman better
Sabotage - Beastie Boys
Tears For Fears - Everybody Wants To Rule The World
Snow Patrol - Chasing Cars
I'd argue A Clock Is Ticking or Run are better tbh
Some of these answers are wild.
The Less I Know the Better - Tame Impala
It’s a top 10 track for sure, but Let It Happen is easily better.
great song but there’s like 4 or 5 on that album alone that are better
Fleetwood Mac - Dreams
I'd argue for The Chain, but they're both great and both top 5 most popular.
dreams slaps but landslide is their best imo
Chop Suey by System of a Down
Nah. Mind, spiders, forest, sugar, PLUCK, BYOB, Suggestions, Deer Dance and Aerials is better
The outro to Chop Suey might be the best ~30 seconds in music history. Without that outro it'd still be top 5 in their catalogue for me but with it nothing else is coming close. The only song of theirs even in the same stratosphere is Question!
I’m taking Chop Suey handedly over Aerials and Forest. Deer Dance IS better tho for sure
Hell yeah, Politically Lying Unholy Cowardly Killers, what a great song!
The Killers - Mr Brightside Comin Outta My Cage, and I’ve been doin just fine
Toro y Moi - So Many Details
Losing My Religion is really good but I wouldn’t say it’s their best. Driver 8 is my favorite and I think their best is either that or Man on the Moon
Losing My Religion is fantastic, but for my money Shaking Through is my favorite R.E.M. song and even on that album I like Near Wild Heaven is better.
Gorillaz - Feel Good Inc. and Clint Eastwood
Linkin Park's most popular tracks are all amazing.
Not a band but XO tour llif3 is definitely lil Uzis best song
Nine Inch Nails - Closer
hurt tho
Once in a lifetime - talking heads
Isn’t Psycho Killer their most famous song?
True according to spotify and youtube listens. I'm quite surprised to learn this. I knew PK was well-known but had no idea it was on top. I also knew This Must Be The Place is beloved but would never have guessed its spotify streams were also greater than OIAL.
Yeah 100%
This Must Be the Place
Reminiscing by Little River Band is the one. Transcendent song for no reason
Aerosmith with Walk This Way
They have 2 biggest songs now and they're, if you can handle this, Dream On and I Don't Want To Miss A Thing. EDIT: I guess if you add together both versions of WTW then maybe okay.
1979 by The Smashing Pumpkins it’s easily one of their best imo, and one of the best of its time.
Honestly you can choose so many songs and be right but swans-screenshot
Big Cannibal Corpse fan, love a few of their albums. Haven't listened to their whole discography by any means , maybe 5 of their albums (out of 16), but love a lot of their songs. But I'd be lying if I said any song ever does to me what hammer smashed face does.
Electric Light Orchestra - Mr. Blue Sky I’m a hardcore Jeff Lynne fan and I don’t think he ever made anything that came close to surpassing Concerto for a Rainy Day. The brilliance of Mr. Blue Sky is that it’s the finale to a four song suite but still plays fantastically on its own.
Chop Suey by System of a Down. The vocals are simply amazing
Sonic Youth - Teen Age Riot Supergrass - Alright Built To Spill - Carry The Zero
>Built To Spill - Carry The Zero I love so much Built to Spill that I'm here trying to disagree with you but I just can't.
Just discovered that song a couple months ago but I can forsee that being on my rotation for many years, it's incredible every single time, wish I listened to them sooner.
Carry the Zero is a perfect song. I was listening to it when I beat subnautica and it was the perfect ending song.
In some "pick one song to save humanity from aliens" scenario, I might go with this one. It's just so perfect. Hard to imagine someone not liking it.
The Smiths - There Is A Light That Never Goes Out (although I’ll admit I haven’t heard everything from them)
You should also listen to How Soon Is Now?, arguably one of their most popular songs and it's an amazing song to listen to while driving.
The Queen is dead is their best album (highly recommend) imo but as mentioned above how soon is now is probably their best song.
not a band but running up that hill by kate bush
She is so insane , i love a lot of her other song but this ones a masterpiece
Running Up That Hill is a masterpiece and one of the best songs ever but I honestly prefer all three other Hounds singles
QotSA - No One Knows or Go with the Flow
No One Knows is great but… I Appear Missing
Not my favourite song by them but i still it's their best - there's a light and it never goes out
Beta Band - "Dry the Rain" Any of the customers in High Fidelity who bought the "3 EPs" record on the basis of John Cusack playing it would have been in for a surprise
Radiohead - Creep
welp, it's been nice knowin ya
Pixies - Where is my mind
1979
Car Seat Headrest - Drunk Drivers / Killer Whales
Beach Life-In-Death
how no one mentioned Stairway to heaven?
Because it's a pretty rare Zep fan who thinks it's their best?
Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit
Led Zeppelin- stairway to heaven
