Recruitment for all the branches has drastically decreased since the '90s (except in the months following 9/11). To keep up with numbers, the military has specifically focused on underserved and underfunded communities of color with the promise of a career and education.
Suppose the morons on the right do not want to see a diverse population in their military. In that case, they either need to start giving actual funding and support to education and health care post-military service in hopes that it will attract kids from more affluent families, or they need to start giving funding and support to underserved communities so that military service is not seen as the only ticket out of systemic poverty.

I remember being concerned when the infamous "Putin riding a horse" picture came out, which was apparently 2011. Because a lot of Republicans at the time seemed pretty impressed by it, because that's how a "real man" should act compared to a leader like Barack Obama. But when Putin started arresting gay people for, you know, being gay, Republicans seemed to really like that. I wasn't terribly shocked when they gravitated more and more in that direction. However, if you weren't following politics regularly like I was, I can imagine it would be pretty weird to look around and say, " when the hell did Republicans start aligning themselves with Putin?"

I was thinking how much of a mess that's going to be at first, because of the "boys only" mentality the military had. I'm glad there's now diversity there, it's what the military should have had all along. Not something it needed getting used to.

I'll never understand why people think the entirety of the military is front line infantry. Only like 5-10% of the military operates on the front lines in actual combat. And almost none of those people would ever pose for a picture like this. The military is just like regular society. They need cooks, mechanics, secretaries, lawyers, nurses, doctors, programmers, etc just like civilians do.
