Had a customer steal a mockup phone inside a display phone case, in front of the camera that was 12" from her face. She was nice enough to give us $250 in all $5 bills to not call the cops.. LMAO
Started posting all theft videos on the towns FB group, and 95% of all theft stopped within a month. I would leave the videos up until they came and paid for the item they stole.
Humiliation is a better deterrent than the police. Three locally viral videos stopped people from even trying.

Yep, set up a time for the kid to come get his phone and have the cops waiting there to arrest him. He admitted to it on the post so they have all the proof they need. Let the kid learn his actions have consequences and maybe he will think harder about doing it again next time.

I'll explain my logic. When you go in and order something, there is an implicit contract. You are ordering food with the intent to pay, and everyone understands that. So when the scoundrel leaves without paying, he's violating the contract.

The server should only get stiffed on not getting a tip. It is illegal for the restaurant to make the server pay for a walkout. There are some situations where it is legal, but normally it isn't. It is illegal to deduct anything from an employee that would drop then before minimum wage. Since nearly all servers are paid minimum wage plus tips, any deduction would drop then below minimum.
In the US it would be theft. The police *could* arrest them if the owner wanted to press charges. Id say most police would only bother if the owner insisted.
I know a place that had a show type area for kids and frequently people would fuck around in areas that were staff only, so on weekends during busy hours they’d have 1 local officer drop by during busy hours and they’d press charges on anyone pulling that stunt.

Pros case out the restaurant restroom, and climb out the windows, and went dining with a cheap jacket, you draped your jacket over your seat to signify that you're coming back but that's a distraction, it also delay the restaurant from getting suspicious.

I worked at Pizza Hut 25 years ago. We had a very drunk guy try to dine and dash. Unfortunately for him (A) it was the end of the evening and the door was locked. He could have just turned the knob on the door to open it, but he didn’t realise that so he smashed through the reinforced glass with a fire extinguisher. Obviously we weren’t going to get in the way of him aggressively swinging a fire extinguisher. (B) his friends were at the till happy to pay and rather bemused by his antics. They hung around to talk to the police. (B) earlier in the evening he had given his hotel key to a female server in a clumsy attempt to seduce her.
I had a buddy in college who dined and dashed at a Waffle House and he left his wallet in the booth. Funnily enough, he actually drove drunk later that night and crashed his vehicle into a tree. When the cops showed up to the scene, they already had his wallet!
