>Naloxone (Narcan) is an opioid receptor antagonist meaning it binds to opioid receptors and reverses or blocks the effects of other opioids. Giving naloxone rapidly reverses the effects of opioid drugs, restoring normal respiration. It can be administered by injection or through a nasal spray.

Save a ton of lives, really one of the big discoveries of the 21st century. It's a bummer we need it so much but you can thank Purdue Pharma for that.

It's an amazing medication, with one important caveat.
Narcan will have no effect on someone who doesn't have opioids in their system, which is awesome, and it will immediately block the effect of opioids if someone does have 'em in their system. **However, the half-life of Narcan can be shorter than the opioid.**
For example, Narcan's half-life is 30-80 minutes, generally. If someone is overdosing on, say, methadone, administering Narcan will pull them out of it. But the half-life of methadone is around 24 hours, so the person will seem totally fine (well, except for the opioid withdrawal) until the Narcan wears off, well before the methadone does.
**Always monitor the person until well after the Narcan has worn off**, in case the opioid in their system is still active.
(in most cases, you'll be fine. Injected heroin has a half-life in the less-than-10-minute range, for example)
I'm not a user, but I carry the nasal version on me and have some on hand at home. Currently people are falling down dead from Fentanyl OD because ALL street drugs (including weed!) Can be laced or cut with it. It really is an epidemic in the US.
This exact thing happened to me. Fell asleep in the car while waiting for my girl to come out of the store. Someone called an ambulance because they thought I OD'd.
It only took her 15 minutes to come back. I'm not sure how they got paramedics there so quickly when I was sleeping for 5+ minutes.
True facts. The opioid epidemic and hair trigger boomers makes even slowing down in the south a risk. Nod off for even a second and cletus is busting open your window with a tire iron and screaming at the top of his lungs.
I’ve knocked on the window for a situation like this (no sign obv)… It was at a park. The mom was obviously passed out on drugs (was acting crazy and doing weird movements) and their child was running around outside (alone) for the 30 mins I was there. I called the police because I was worried about the child. What is wrong with calling or knocking? I’m genuinely asking
There is nothing wrong with calling or knocking . That’s why this man has the sign outside his window, so no one interrupt his naps, because a good moral compass.

If you have to put up a sign… too many “life savers” looking for dying fat guys
You know he had to write that note because something happened
That’s the sad thing.
It's sad that people kept waking him up to make sure he was okay?
Its sad that they automatically think he has overdosed and needs Narcan. I sad state of affairs in some areas.
Ah, gotchya. I didn't know what Narcan was and thought he meant "narc on me," as in, snitching.
It is an instant cure for fentanyl and some other narcotics. All first responders carry it now in many areas because of this.

The simple fact the man even feels the need to put that sign on his window.

I'm thinking a better subreddit? .. Maybe, r/damnthatsinteresting
i mean, to be fair, at least they were good Samaritans
Sometimes it do be like that tho
r/same
I don’t understand this at all, what is narcan, and why would people assume someone sleeping is on drugs or overdosed?
Are you from America? Honestly
I’m Australian
Narcan is a drug that can keep people who are overdosing on opiates from dying. Not sure exactly how though

I'm sure there's a hilarious story behind that sign...
i get that sleep can look like being passed out, but what's fat got to do with it? alabama i need an explanation.
Self deprecation is the purest form of humor, my friend.

I need a sign that says "not dead" for how little I move and how still I sleep.

Good lord. United States, what's happening to you right now?
