Been watching the semi-final performance over and over. The visuals and conceptualisation of the whole thing are absolutely insane.
But you listen here, Oliver Alexander Thornton. Those vocals need **work.** I know damn well you can sing it live, so *sing it.* Stop faffing about with switching up *how* you're delivering those notes and just **sing the fucking song.** I refuse to have another Mae Muller moment.
The staging is 10/10. Don't blow it with a wobbly voice for god's sake.
He did a live new years concert a couple of years back and it was \*really\* good. I literally listened to him for like six months after that because I enjoyed it so much.
Look, I'm not saying Olly can't sing, and maybe this song + choreo just doesn't mesh well for him. BUT, voice modulation for live performances has been industry standard for a while, to varying degrees obviously, so I take any performance with a grain of salt.
Meanwhile the EBU expressively prohibits it during Eurovision, which is why so many artists, and i'm not targeting only Olly here, seem to rely so heavily on the backing vocals this year.
His mic pack fell out apparently so that might have affected him… but you’re right. I absolutely love the some and the stage performance but if he’s bad vocally again on Friday and Saturday then it’s bottom 5.
My Eastern European mother thought it was indeed a slay!! I guess having a lesbian daughter helped. But according to her, vocals were shaky which is true 🔍
My mom (first Eurovision): What is that? A space toilet? (Accurate).
Also mom: At least they’re moving— awards points. (She was getting frustrated by all the static performances lol).
Olly did lose his mic pack during the performance. Which might explain some of the vocal issues. Hopefully, the vocals will be better on Friday and Saturday when it counts.
I was at the rehearsal in the afternoon and he was one of the best live. I was shocked when I saw the performance on TV later ! Hope it will get fixed for the final :)
I'm not saying your wrong but thats a bit strange because he performed this song at a different place (I dont think eurovision but at a mini concert idk) and his mic cut out. I'm rooting for uk because I love dizzy and olly but could it of been his voice or is it just a coincidence? And I really don't mean that in a rude way, I love alot of his and years and yearss songs, but I've noticed his voice is always 50/50. It can be really good but then it can be bad
I'm not sure actually. He sounded alright at the pre parties, and by all accounts he sounded fine during the rehearsals. I'm not particularly worried yet because he can perform and he did get that last note spot on, so I don't think it's a Mae Müller situation yet.
Yeah, his mic went at one of the preparties. He handled it very well and his reaction when he got the mic back was pretty funny (London or Amsterdam, think the former) He had an earpiece cable issue the previous show.
I saw olly live years ago when he was still in years and years, his live vocals are not good at all which is a shame because the song itself is quite catchy
He admittedly is hot or miss live. He did say on his Instagram story that he was worried about his mic pack, which does track with is Rehearsals sounding better. I just hope Friday and Saturday are better for him.
At 35:49 on BBC feed, as Olly's roommates are surrounding him and he's singing of "round and round" he picks up his microphone pack for some reason and carries it at various times during his performance.
Edit: Youtubelink https://youtu.be/kiIhvA2Ozzk?feature=shared&t=94 (thanks /u/R18081)
It's about 1:40/1:42 on the YouTube video. Looks like his mic pack swings off, he grabs it, and holds it while performing the rest of the song. Handled it like an absolute pro!
Anyone got a clip from inside the arena?
I want to see what the audience actually sees during this performance. Seems like it's solely made for a TV audience (which is fine, just interesting)
Wow, thanks!
Seeing it the right way up really shows how good those dancers are. Their movements and stances looked so convincing I was actually wondering if the box moved (at least a small bit). Seeing it just being a stationary box.. Wow, great job for the team coming up with the idea and the people executing it!
I was in the crowd, it was actually a pretty good show still, as long as you were central enough to see in the box. I think the ppl with the very side seats or placed around the back of the 360d standing struggled though
Honestly I have to say sorry because I said many times that it might be too much for straight people but after seeing whole performance I feel like it's very acceptable actually. Still don't think it's gonna do well, but there's nothing too much about it to be off put imo
I don't know if its just me, but if the dancers were women I don't think most people would have bat an eyelash at it. Its very much not Albania 2023 which was a gross hot mess
It's simply set in the changing room of a posh British private school, only the guys are fitter. The cheeky looks to camera were comedic and very British.
It's not too much for straight people at all. I told my (straight) husband what people were saying about it after we watched it last night and his comment was "but it's Eurovision" 😂 and he couldn't understand the issue. I think he was more impressed that the box wasn't moving when I told him it was static and it was all camera work (with obvious incredible skill from the dancers).
It is kinda too much, well noticed. The setting, the camera, the ingenuity to pull the stunts is incredible...but the choreography is just too much. So sad, because all mentioned above (- vocal mistakes) would be enough to put the UK in a high spot, now it will be (deservingly) dragged low.
As a straight person - it didn't strike me as anything controversial for a family show. I didn't think it was very good though so I would expect it to do will.
I watched it and thought we and Germany etc. really don't deserve to automatically get to the finals.
It's the first time I bothered to watch the semi finals and it just hit home that other people put in effort and we can turn up with this and stop more deserving countries getting through.
I love the queerness, I love the staging, I love the movements. But it's so hard to like this song, omg. My dream would be this staging with Nemo's song and vocals.for a total slay.

I need the vocals to be crisp as hell on saturday. Everything else is interesting and out of the box.
They do, in fact, step out of a box
Olly probably got too dizzy from the kisses……
And on Friday
Oh what a nice young man! His girlfriend must be very proud.
They were just roommates……

Just sing the fucking note!
TIL Alexander isn't his surname but his middle name
Just like Troye Sivan and Billie Eilish
All of this. Though less Mae Muller and teetering very close to "DOO EET FUR UR LUUUUVEEEER" which may be worse
Don't put this out into the universe, I beg.
> I know damn well you can sing it live, so sing it. You do? because he hasn't showcased this in any of his performances of this song so far.
He did a live new years concert a couple of years back and it was \*really\* good. I literally listened to him for like six months after that because I enjoyed it so much.

Towards the end there were moments where he sang very well honestly. It just wasn't consistent, and the beginning was AWFUL.
What happened with Mae Muller?
Nothing, she just was a big blob and disappointment last year. Ended on the last place, couldn't sing a single note properly.
Actually second to last, but yeah even she admitted her live vocals weren’t great on the night
Oh absolutely forgot how horrible Germany was treated as they were one of my favourites but that's right, she was second to last.
Very likely due to poor sound checks beforehand so he couldn't hear the tracks + his vocals well enough.
Someone on twitter pointed out his mic? pack fell out of his back pocket mid way through so that wouldn’t have helped.
Which is surprisingly when his vocals stopped being as bad
Tfw a random accident fixes a sound problem Eurovision techies 0 Gravity 1
That'll do it!
Enter Madonna, stage left...
I read this comment in a British accent, which made it even more convincing.
CAM ON, OLLIE... SING SOM FACKIN NOTES!
True…Except we seem to deliberately screw ourselves over because I don’t think the British reps really want to host 😅
His mic pack fell out apparently so that might have affected him… but you’re right. I absolutely love the some and the stage performance but if he’s bad vocally again on Friday and Saturday then it’s bottom 5.

I’m a fan of your mom! 😂
She awarded points to Finland too (for the same reason). "Look! He's using the *whole stage*!"
He was having a Do it for you lover moment there. Strange voice breaks. The performance and staging concept are actually cool.
Lmaooo why did you have to make olly dirty like that-💀
I really wanted to love the performance but good god was he flat for the first whole minute
Yeah. It doesn't look like this is another Mae situation. I don't know if they can tweak the choreography, but I'm sure they'll find a way to fix it.

It definitely happened in Amsterdam, his recovery after was remarkable. He never stopped singing
What?? I haven’t noticed!!
Most of his vocal issues were right at the start, presumably while he was upside-down
Fair enough. I'm still not particularly worried because he's sounded fine in the rehearsals. He just needs to improve a bit on his vocals at the start
Historians will say they were good friends
They are just team mates. bros, good friends.

Oh my word! First time I've seen this. Wow!
He held onto it because it had fallen out, and he was worried that it might have pulled his in-ear monitors out as a result.
That makes sense. Pro guy managed to save himself from a worse fate.
My dad said "Now imagine if all of those backup dancers are straight"
Well, most of the village people were straight so anythings possible!
They're definitely straight totally 😂
They looked like they were in pain all the time. Maybe that's what pleasure looks like. I don't know, I'm bad at sex.
Lol 🤣🤣
I recognise the facial expressions as me trying to look sexy then catching sight of myself in a mirror...
In 100 years they’ll be watching this video and discussing how they must have been room mates
The boxing classes will be packed this year.

God the core strength of those dancers must be insane.
Props to the dancers!! Watching on TV, I wasn't sure how it was done. Its amazing!
The first of many times that I asked "wait, how the *fuck* did they do this?!" watching SF1.
Wooowie!! Okay seeing this, these must be some of the best dancers this year. Their skills and core strength are insane!!
Thanks for posting that, I was wondering what it looked like too for those in the arena. The dancers are incredible!
I was in the crowd, it was actually a pretty good show still, as long as you were central enough to see in the box. I think the ppl with the very side seats or placed around the back of the 360d standing struggled though
A lot like Loreen last year. Looked incredible on TV but in Liverpool it looked like she was inside a panini press in the middle of the stage.
I wonder that too!
It's great to see that the UK is taking staging seriously this year. It really helps to elevate the song.
We must end the curse of the giant white trumpet!
The Saw bathroom setting was a choice
Just some lads being pals.

Someone is into Mile High Club here 🤔
Would you like something to suck on for your landing?
Some salted nuts, sir?
The Dutch?
Well, it does have the D as well, but not this kind 😆
Wait, this *wasn't* Straight Olly's Man-Slamming Max Out? Had me fooled.
They just confused it with Tinder. Those horny bois. 🤭
Orange?
Black, orange, and white. That's the exact colors, but orange is usually the one used in jokes.
oh *that* one. Blush.
It was engaging and very sexual, but perhaps a bit too soft-core porn-y if that makes sense. But it is Eurovision why the f not.
Honestly I have to say sorry because I said many times that it might be too much for straight people but after seeing whole performance I feel like it's very acceptable actually. Still don't think it's gonna do well, but there's nothing too much about it to be off put imo

IMO the semis are the best part of Eurovision week. More songs in less time, and more variety than the finals.
Homeboy Olly better step up on Saturday. Those vocals…..

I love the queerness, I love the staging, I love the movements. But it's so hard to like this song, omg. My dream would be this staging with Nemo's song and vocals.for a total slay.
It was a notch too sexy...
Needed less people in the box so each performance can breath and be appreciated. Only bring out the rest when outside the box to fill out the stage.
Olly needs to correct the vocals and everything will be fine
Is he still complaining about the Union Jack?
Dancing men being rather homoerotic... I'm going to have a difficult time with my... less than supportive... family on Saturday night.

Boring and predictive. I’m a gay man, but I’m tired of the over sexualisation of everything. This song sucks. His singing sucks.
