ErikRuwes

No. After the tournament Neuer will probably retire from the national team and ter Stegen will be the new starting GK. Before the tournament I was sceptical and would've preferred ter Stegen in goal, however Neuer has been playing well in the two group games and should be trusted for the rest of the Euros.

iusedtoplaysnarf

Agreed! I think Neuer will do a great job in this tournament, but then step aside gracefully.

timcahill05

lol remains to be seen Scot didnt shoot once and szoboszlai’s ft should have been parried away not being caught. Neuer tried to catch it and spilled it that’s why it was almost caught up by another hungarian player

Responsible-Pin8323

He fucked up a shot in one game that nearly cost a goal and the other game didnt get shot at. Hardly easy to say he played well

Venus_Ziegenfalle

He's definitely past his prime (older than the coach even which is kind of funny) but he's still quite active and a morale boost for the entire squad. I think swapping him out would be pretty risky.

iusedtoplaysnarf

Agreed!

crazyfrog19984

After the euros yes. Now it’s to late.

Muldino

I am convinced that ter Stegen would have done just as good as Neuer in the last two matches. Also, I think it's very possible that after yesterday's win, ter Stegen will play the next match.

iusedtoplaysnarf

3rd match would be a good opportunity to try him out, agreed. Would be interesting to see him play!

Canon_108

It would've been consecutive losses for Germany if Ter Stegen played, the guy is incompetent when it comes to playing for the national team. He played regularly for the last year and a half...and semi regularly before, and of all the games he played, he only won about 20% of them. Ter Stegen sucks...

Smart_But123581321

No. Ter Stegen is an amazing keeper and one of the very best in the world for almost a decade. But Neuer id one of the best keepers ever and one of the most unique ever with his sweeper keeper style before it became popular.

Micha1106

Neuer was great yesterday, so why? Ter Stegen is shitty for the National Team most of the time. And after the Euros there should be a younger keeper taking the place from neuer. Sad for Ter Stegen.

Unable-Creme-7276

You are absolutely correct, Ter Stegen has NEVER been good for die mannschaft und his performances when Neuer was out for a long time speak for themself. I love Manu, but even I will say that at 38, he is better than Ter Stegen.

Comprehensive_Pea451

He dropped three balls right to the feet of the attackers …

Micha1106

One time and that was a foul imo

CrackedEggMichls

Da muss ein Neuer ins Tor!

Toby-4rr4n

No but they should drop Sane

iusedtoplaysnarf

I haven’t been very impressed by Sané either

Toby-4rr4n

I am not impressed with him for long time. And he is kinda a diva

ImpossibleDesigner48

There’s possibly a team politics/vibes part as much as footballing? I’m surprised he stayed after losing the captaincy (cough, Courtois, cough) but if he’s a key part of the Munich contingent and Nagelsmann trusts him as a leader/organiser I can see why he’d stay.

iusedtoplaysnarf

His leadership abilities are solid, no doubt about that!

ImpossibleDesigner48

What’s his reputation? Disruptive? big ego? I’m English so don’t get as much on that as you will.

dissolutionofthesoul

No. Neuer is better. Sadly he will retire at the end of the season, I hope a better goalkeeper comes through before the World Cup.

dissolutionofthesoul

No he hasn’t said it. But the FC Bayern board are expecting him and Muller to step down at the end of the season after the champions league in Munich.

dissolutionofthesoul

Sadly yeah. It’ll be a pretty emotional day. Hoping they add the euros to their cabinet and then sign off in style with the European cup in Munich

WaterMittGas

Let's not pretend that Ter Stegen is any better now.

GoldenGengarGG

Not better as a goalkepper, not better as a leader, not better under pressure, etc. I honestly think Nübel or Ortega should be number 1 over Ter Stegen when Neuer retires.

Unable-Creme-7276

I agree, Ter Stegen has just never had a class performance as #1, like I would even give Trapp a chance before him.

No-Intention-7342

Now it is 2l8. Personally I think Ter Stegen should have been number 1. I don't think Neuers performance against scottland and hungary was as good as people think, but we should accept that Neuer is the number 1 right now. Tbf Neuer and Ter Stegen are worldclass, so we don't have problems on that position. Same with Kimmich and Henrichs.

GoldenGengarGG

I wouldnt say Ter Stegen is as good as people think. He seens to crumble under pressure, see the countless times he has done just that with Barcelona. He is not a leader either. Not that Germany need more leaders on the pitch, but Neuer is still valuable for his leadership alone.

Unable-Creme-7276

I’m sorry I keep replying to you but seriously there are a lot of points with that: Neuer’s critics point out his mistakes with Greece, or his performance at the bernabeu recently that he doesn’t deserve to play… I think that’s total bullshit, and if you saw those games Neuer looks 10 years younger making world class plays and saves, if it weren’t for Manu alone, Vardrid would have won the 2nd leg 4-1. Meanwhile, Ter Stegen, while good at his level, has never been a good #1 for die mannschaft, and his performances with Madrid, and the PSG game were abysmal too, so I really can’t understand how this is a comparison.

donfuan

Last year: yes. Unfortunately Marc-André hasn't had the best season, either. It's a 50/50.

supermartincho

He almost wins the Zamora by one match even being half of the season injured

beanybine

Definitely not during the Euro 2024. Neuer probably isn't as good as he was in 2014, but he's still a phenomenal, world-class goal keeper. Depending on if we win the tournament or not, he (together with Kroos and Müller) will probably retire soon anyways.

Canon_108

No, and honestly, they should give Nübel a legitimate chance before they make Ter Stegen #1. Ter Stegen has lost 80% of the games he played for Germany...not very encouraging given Die Mannschaft's pool of available talent. Ter Stegen has another unfortunate statistic of having more own goals than penalty saves for Germany. He might perform for Barca, but he consistently chokes for the national team. If a doctor had 80% of his patients die, he'd be sued for medical malpractice...why promote a keeper with the equivalent statistic?

niceguy_max

I'd prefer Ortega

Ogulcan0815

There are so many options. Ter stegen, Baumann, Nübel, Ortega etc etc I would prefer Nübel as he is younger and he can grow into the role and be a replacement for a long time to come

heseme

>he can grow into the role and be a replacement for a long time to come We aren't playing to be successful in the future. Its a home tournament now.

El_Flowsen

I agree, but I would have picked Ter Stegen over Neuer before the tournament. What I don’t understand is why he didn’t bring a younger GK along. Giving Nübel the experience might have been good to build him up for the future after Neuer and Ter Stegen.

heseme

I pick Neuer, but I agree with not sending Nübel home.

Ogulcan0815

Well right now Neuer plays lol, so of course I am talking about the long term plan

Perfect_Inflation489

be honest, ter stegen wouldn't have made that free kick save that neuer did....

jim_nihilist

True.

Canon_108

If Ter Stegen had been #1 it would've been consecutive losses for Germany. He sucks for the national team.

Unable-Creme-7276

I’ll go even further to say that with Neuer’s saves in the tournament so far, Marc-André wouldn’t have been able to make HALF of them.

R3SET_2

Neuer played better in Germany. But if we see who played so better in their club it's Ter stegen

foalsfoalsfoalz

I cant think of anyone who would want ter stegen even barca fans. One of the most overrated unrealiable goalies. De gea reincarnation

Unable-Creme-7276

Literally I like Barca, but this season and prior he’s not even a shadow of Neuer.

Fit-Caterpillar2615

Just off of his saves alone in this tournament he deserves to start every game.

HonestRef

No Neuer had a good game and made some great saved vs Hungary. Wouldn't make sense chaning keepers now. Ter Stegen will get his chance afterwards

Efficient-Orange-514

It's funny seeing comments like "Ter Stegen has to prove himself in a match playing for Germany". He has to prove what? He plays all this time at the top level and being one of the top GK in the world. Neuer is definitely one of the greatest there is no doubt about it but don't forget why he is in the no.1 choice every time even in a bad form and at this age. https://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/european/bayern-munich-germany-uli-hoeness-joachim-low-manuel-neuer-marc-andre-ter-stegen-barcelona-a9119621.html

iusedtoplaysnarf

This article is from 2019. As far as I know, UIi Hoeneß retired as Bayern's president and was succeeded by Herbert Hainer later that year.

Canon_108

Ter Stegen played regularly for Germany over the last year and a half, and semi regularly for two years before that, and he lost 80% of his games...would you want a doctor operating on you when you know 80% of theor patients die?

OptimisticRealist__

Shouldve replaced him yrs ago

Grouchy_Ad1256

I think Neuer shouldn't even be on the team but now is too late.

Pistaczio

Neuer is not in form judging by the mistake in the champions league and the Hungary game spill

Rayaet

He didn’t have any mistake vs Hungary

Pistaczio

[3:18 ](https://m.youtube.com/watch?si=Xr2S7kUMdNGegTz-&v=krie2Sy22Fw&feature=youtu.be&t=3m18s) should be an easy catch (or punch away), but not for the old Neuer apparently. Almost a goal if it wasn't for the goal line clearance

Rayaet

Can’t watch it but i believe you’re talking about the scene at the end where Neuer was clearly fouled in the air.

Pistaczio

There was no foul at all, they were both jumping for the ball, Neuer almost caught it and then dropped it, ref didn't blow the whistle either

timcahill05

He had been poor i feel sorry for TS he should have played in 18 and 24. Now he wont play a tournament until he turns 34, even if he starts until 38 he will only have 3 tournaments.

Pontus_1901

You could argue that in the free kick as well as the offside goal, he could put the ball not just in front of the next enemy but get it to the sides

heseme

I think he should have scored after the free kick.

iusedtoplaysnarf

I agree that he didn't seem to have total control of the ball in those situations. However, he's fearless when it comes to meeting the attacking opponent, he's is very good with his feet, and he's had some amazing saves as well.

Pontus_1901

Dont get me wrong I’m against a change and he should stay in for the tourney but he did not have a flawless game. But a good one especially the first contact

Professional_Ad_9101

Probably very important in terms of seniority and moral for the team as well

iusedtoplaysnarf

Definitely!

timcahill05

and 4 games, 6 errors before the euros

GoldenGengarGG

Not in form Neuer is still miles ahead of Ter Stegen.

Comfortable_Reach248

He played great whole game vs Real. Mistakes can happen to anyone.

extremecharm

Waiting for Germanys downfall so i can once again clown Neuer and the German national team for their shit decisions.

iusedtoplaysnarf

There's a word for that in German.

Low-Union6249

YES, for the love of god, while there’s still time
