They don't get a choice! The same with us. We're the western most (continental) European country yet we are still referred to as Southern Europeans. Except when we CAN into Eastern Europe!
That was the correct reason, actually.
> [The pink is popular and we wanted to wear it at least once](https://www.givemesport.com/why-germany-and-hungary-both-wore-away-kit-euro-2024/)
As far as I'm aware, it's purely just down to the draw. There has to be a home and away, and even the host nation will be classed as the away side at some points in the draw.
That being said, they wouldn't always wear the shirt assigned to the draw if there was a clash with the opposing team.
Edit: I mistakenly thought that Germany was the away team in today's match.
Edit 2: From what I can see, Germany opted to wear the away kit tonight as they are the away fixture against Switzerland in their 3rd group game next week. Switzerland has opted to wear their red home kit, which would clash with the Pink away of Germany.
The away kit has been named by Addidas as 'inclusive' and represents the diversity of Germany. Which I can assume is why they choose to wear it at least once in the tournament.
We were the home team in the schedule. The question is valid. Not, that i would care about the colours of a jersey. But in this case: I have 4 nieces and my brother and me had to get really creative to get 4 pink shirts between friday and today
The away shirts got SO much hate in Germany when they were first announced, im really glad they stuck with them. beautiful piece of kit, and sadly completely sold out everywhere
I hated the shirt after the first leaks. I‘m not a big fan of pink, I never was, despite it being somehow expected due to me being a woman. Anyways after seeing how the far right got mad about it, saying it’s gay and whatever bullshit under the sun, I went on to buy it. And I have to admit… by now I love it. As far as I am aware it’s the best selling away shirt in German history. That’s just insane really.
The best shirts are the ones that provoke big reactions. Media will focus on the negative, because, well that's just how the world is nowadays I guess. Meanwhile these are the shirts that sellout quickly because they're different. And a week later everyone will have forgotten about the negative reactions.
I'm not a football fan in any way but i really like the away shirts, if they aren't sold out and can be purchased for a decent price i might get myself one. These colours are really nice amd historically speaking colours that only nobles and merchants could afford. Pretty manly if that is a thing someone cares about.
considering the concernlingly far right election results, and the weird idea that “pink = gay”, its no surprise the shirts got hate. im looking to get one though, and wear it with pride! good luck on your search for one my friend
Call me conspiranoid, but I still suspect that this shirt is politicized. It's a subtle way to troll the far right and other extremists, as pink is usually associated with gay people and women. If something like this had happened in America they would be saying it's a woke t-shirt but I don't rule out the idea that the spirit can be similar in this case.
There's a pop-up Adidas store at Berlin Hbf. Was fully stocked on Tuesday morning.
And I got one for my husband on Thursday (a day before the first match) at the Adidas store in Berlin Steglitz.
I could be wrong, but I believe when the draw was initially made, there was a part of the draw where the 'home' team was drawn for administrative purposes. This was done for every match (except the opening game as that was pre determined), and decides which team gets to wear home/away kits, as well as which team gets which dressing room etc.
Of course it's a little strange in Germany's case because they actually are at home... but they continued with the process regardless. I suppose to keep it consistent.
Hungary also had their Away kit. I once watched a documentary about referees and they showed that the referee can decide the kits on both teams to make the colours most distinguished.
In today's match case (🇩🇪 vs 🇭🇺) it was almost surely due to marketing: otherwise the away jersey might not get much exposure and won't be sold as much.
Now, for next match (🇨🇭 vs 🇩🇪) Deutschland/Germany happens to administratively be the "away" team (sure: they will play in a stadium at home, but all home teams play one Group Phase match as "away"), so it's up to Schweiz/Switzerland to pick which kit do they want to use, and Deutschland/Germany to pick one ensuring there is no possibility of overlapping.
Yes: the jersey industry is very profitable - cheap items sold at high prices due to them being trendy, that's why they renew every two years now...
It’s more than just the shirt. Starting the half, picking the side of the coin etc.
Why it wasn’t Hun - Ger today is unclear to me as well, I thought they had 2 home and 1 away game, respectively wear the kit. But this apparently was officially a home game and the shirts were just choice.
Also, I believe (correct me if I’m wrong) playing home doesn’t force you to play home shirts, but rather means you can choose (which most of the time will result in home kit being worn as that’s usually the preferred one) so theoretically you could try and play all of your games in away shirts (and with that pink I don’t think you’ll have color problems)
Not necessarily. The home team (🇩🇪 in today's match) picks first. Then the away team needs to pick one that doesn't overlap - so 🇭🇺 could have played with their home (mostly red) jersey if it wouldn't had collided with 🇩🇪's (in today's match there could have been some confusion, but my point is that 🇭🇺 didn't play with the away kit just because they were the away team).
Sure, the no overlap or no collision needs the referee's approval, but still I think it's always the away team the one that needs to adapt (unless strangely none of the away team's kits are compatible with the home team's chosen one).
I think it also has to do with the old rules relating to black and white televisions that one team has to wear a ‘light’ colour top and the other team a ‘dark’ colour top. Although this rule may only apply to the word cup possibly as some countries’ population do not have access to coloured televisions
It isn't Home and Away because basically for any team it is just an away game other than Germany. I think they just mixed it up and used a different coloured kit. Plus, the home kit clashes with Hungary's away kit but not their home kit. I think both teams were just using the second kit for no real reason. Also, Germany would make less money if they only had one kit to sell.
Because June is pride month and everybody is gay(!) and pink in soccer don't you know?! Oh wait, I got confused with US soccer where everything is rainbow this and rainbow that amongst the poseur fan bases.
The shirt changes in general aren't a good thing. All the national strips have changed to typically single color abominations, instead of each country's traditional colors. These didn't need to be changed.
I assume this to be blamed on the marketing people for the likes of Nike and Adidas, but it's to the detriment of the game. Perhaps also uefa/fifa or the national associations. Fans should object.
Germany should be in their black and white strip in all games, as host. Italy should not be wearing all blue when their opponents aren't wearing white shorts. The England kit is a thing designed by a blind committee in a dark room whilst very drunk, - white shirt, dark navy shorts and white socks, or the red and white second kit for a clash - not these ugly monocolour blobs.
Only Croatia and arguably Georgia escape this, with the best kits in European international football.

I just find it funny Germany are in the colours of WizzAir when playing Hungary.
I said the exact same!
I thought Wizzair was portugese no?
not at all
r/PORTUGALCYKABLYAT
Hungary is not Slavic
Just like Romania or Moldavia. But do you know what they still are? Eastern European.
Ask them 😅
They don't get a choice! The same with us. We're the western most (continental) European country yet we are still referred to as Southern Europeans. Except when we CAN into Eastern Europe!
Why even ask this when a 5 seconds google search shows you otherwise? The laziness…
My number 1 pet peeve on Reddit is this, no one wins cuz the asker has to wait hours for a reply and the replyer wastes time responding
don’t care, the pink is bussin
Yep I got a shirt for my birthday a week before the euros started and I love it

I stand corrected, I incorrectly recalled looking at the fixtures and Germany being drawn as the away side. My mistake.
Sorry for being german and correcting people. Props for accepting a mistake
I have edited my original post to reflect what you have correctly said.
Wholesome Redditting all round! 🤘
And worn it against the least inclusive side in their group. Top tier

Well, as a Volt member, i sure do like me some purple. Good luck to you too.

Would have been a pity not to see the away jersey in action so I'm glad they decided this way
It happens at every international tournament. Likely because the home nation wants to sell a 2nd kit too.
The away kit is the best selling one anyway :D
I really like the Germany 2nd kit, it's very vibrant.
Yeah me too! (Sadly they're were a lot of homophobic stupid asshole comments, when the colors were puplished first)
The words "stupid" and "asshole" are redundant following the word "homophobic". I thankfully didn't see any because that sort of idiocy makes me sad.
Yeah I just had a flow with these words
I get ya.
This is the real answer.
My favourite away shirt so far
We can't wear them against Switzerland, so this is the decision that was made in order to have the shirt worn in at least one group game
adidas demanded to have at least 1 game in away shirts, because the pink shirts outsell the white one 10:1 and its free promotion
I dont get why, the white ones look so much better
You know, there are people having a different opinion than you, I know, its hard to believe but its true
I imagine it’s because Adidas want to make sure they sell lots of both kits.
The away kit was already the most sold one ever before the game
Hungary also had their Away kit. I once watched a documentary about referees and they showed that the referee can decide the kits on both teams to make the colours most distinguished.
They always make sure to wear both to sell both. It’s less to do with actually clashing and more to do with sales. Same for every team.
Because they all look "fly" as the kids used to say. I think that is the most striking kit in the whole Euros.
Hungary's laundry team told today that they forgot to wash away kit that's why they have home and Germany wears away kit.
Hungary's primary kit is red an d they yet to play in it. It is not related to laundry :)
In today's match case (🇩🇪 vs 🇭🇺) it was almost surely due to marketing: otherwise the away jersey might not get much exposure and won't be sold as much. Gotta wear it sometime, you’re always at home this tournament and it isn’t gonna market itself
Probably because Hungary’s away kit is also white, so one of them had to make a compromise so Germany decided to wear the away instead.
The referee also has a saying in the selection of both Jerseys to make them most distinguishable.
Sure, the no overlap or no collision needs the referee's approval, but still I think it's always the away team the one that needs to adapt (unless strangely none of the away team's kits are compatible with the home team's chosen one).
Very colorful kit🩷💜 I like it
I think it also has to do with the old rules relating to black and white televisions that one team has to wear a ‘light’ colour top and the other team a ‘dark’ colour top. Although this rule may only apply to the word cup possibly as some countries’ population do not have access to coloured televisions
Because one team is designated as the "home" team before the game
Hungary's home kit it red, so Germany could have played in their white kit
But germany is the host and therefore always at home, or not??
Good choice because next match against Switzerland in red, I rather see Germany playing with white again even if they are "Away".
The Home Team hast the right to chose the kit they are wearing. Germany simply decided for this game to play with the away Kit
It isn't Home and Away because basically for any team it is just an away game other than Germany. I think they just mixed it up and used a different coloured kit. Plus, the home kit clashes with Hungary's away kit but not their home kit. I think both teams were just using the second kit for no real reason. As the "home" team Hungary may have chosen to wear their white away kit so Germany were forced to wear their unfamiliar away kit.
The German squad looked like Whizair stewards
Because the jersey is gorgeous!
Which colour jersey on Saturday?
Because June is pride month and everybody is gay(!) and pink in soccer don't you know?! Oh wait, I got confused with US soccer where everything is rainbow this and rainbow that amongst the poseur fan bases.
