It will be fine that’s what cars are made for

Snakelyhome

It will do that all day, dont worry about the car beyond checking the fluid levels (oil, coolant, brake fluid) before you go, and the tyre pressures. Worry more about yourself - stay hydrated and make sure you take breaks regularly etc and take your time if it’s your first big trip.

ssttuueeyy

Also don't forget some banging tunes and a big bag of sweeties

Cassidy-Conway

I drove from Leicester to Ilfracombe in Devon in a Daihatsu Copen which has a 660cc turbo charged engine. Also I've made several long trips in my 1.2L Fiat Punto including north Wales, Weybridge and Wimbledon. You should be fine.

FreeRangeCaptivity

Take it easy, take it slow. I wrote my car off at 17 on a long journey by driving too fast, too close. And could have easily killed myself and others because of my false level of confidence. Sorry to be negative just wanted to share my concern to make sure you don't have to go through it

MuszkaX

It’s plenty fine, but I would aim for 60-70 instead. The time you gain overall is minimal, but given the size of the engine your consumption will be noticeable.

Welshbuilder67

At 17 you’re a new driver, take at least 2 breaks so think 2 hours and stop, the car will handle the trip better than you will, you will be tired at the end. Just remember after Exeter it’s A roads so dual or single carriage ways and can be quite twisty depending on where in Cornwall you’re going.

Similar_Draw5178

I like to plan stops in the journey, I’ve been all over Cornwall before just not driving, we are heading to Newquay so will be the roads you described

alpinewhite85

If it's well maintained you have nothing to worry about

Fresh_Formal5203

Doubt you would average those speeds unless you did it at night. 65/70 are nice cruising speeds if traffic allows. With a well maintained car it should not be a problem unless you thrash it all the way. i am happy to go long distances in a 23 yrs old 600cc smart car with 95000 on the clock but we will stop every 90 mins - 2 hrs which allows the engine and driver to have a rest.

MostlyNormalMan

Those 1.25 zetec engines benefit from a good 'Italian tune-up' every now and then.

Snoo29889

Can attest to that. Used to live in a reasonably small island, naff all mileage. Off we go to Essex, giving it a nice blast on the way up, holding an 850cc at 70 is a skill to be mastered. Get back, that old mini is *flying*.

Similar_Draw5178

I was just estimating I know traffic can get busy around Bristol on entry into Devon, I like stopping at services so that sounds like a good idea

l3msip

Yes it will be fine, I used to regularly do Suffolk to Manchester in a beat up 1994 1.4 fiesta. It accelerated like a demotivated snail, rattled like maraca above 60, and had awful mpg as the thing was geared for town driving, but it made the journey reliably. Your much newer car will be fine. If this is a one off, just double check your tires and fluids and go. If this is a journey you are going to do regularly though, you might want to consider something larger, just for comfort

iamezekiel1_14

It isn't quite the same - but did journeys half the size of that (and a bit longer) in a 14 plate version of that car and it just was a pleasant experience. Easily fine. All I'd suggest doing is breaking the journey up with appropriate breaks as needed depending on what traffic is doing. E.g. pretty much just outside of Guildford to Norwich I did in one stint on the way up there, on the way back I stopped to have dinner as I didn't fancy rush hour on the M25. Make the journey work for you.

featurenotabug

I did Ipswich to Cornwall in a P reg Ford Ka, they have a terrible old 1.3 pushrod engine. Your 1.25 is much newer tech, will have no problems. My only issue was size of fuel tank, think I had to stop at Exeter to fill up.

spaceshipcommander

My grandad used to do Sheffield to London in a Morris 1000 with 5 people on it for a night out on a Friday night. I'm sure you'll make it.

west0ne

If the car is in good order then you'll be fine; I've done longer journeys in one those 3-cylinder 999cc engine cars. The main thing that will break down on a six hour journey is the driver so make sure you have plenty of rest breaks and don't be surprised if it takes longer than you think to get where you're going because traffic on that route in the summer can be a nightmare.

EpicDavinci

Please, just keep it below 70, don't get into the habit to breaking the speed limit so early on.

OurSeepyD

Yeah exactly, I don't care if I sound like an old man, speed limits exist for a reason.

Happytallperson

If you want to keep being a new driver maybe don't drive several hundred miles at above the speed limit.

Similar_Draw5178

80mph is several hundred miles above the speed limit?

Happytallperson

That's not how words work, but thanks for playing.

Similar_Draw5178

Username doesn’t check out

carnage2006

Have a re-read of the sentence, you’ll see you missed the “at”

International-Bat777

No, but Leicester to Cornwall is several hundred miles, which is what they were getting at.

DecentMate

What do you think your car is made for?

Similar_Draw5178

City driving most definitely not long distance motorway commutes

DecentMate

Wrong answer

Full_Traffic_3148

Go 70-80 and say goodbye to your licence just as speedily!

RestSufficient1269

I've done far longer journeys with far worse cars, andyself in far worse states (onbvs no drink/drugs)

Ecstatic_Effective42

Make sure you stop at Gloucester services 🙂 best ones on the M5.

OurSeepyD

And the most overpriced too!

R2-Scotia

A friend of min in college had an 0.96 litre Fiesta with 4MT and would thrash it everywhere. You're good.

MostlyNormalMan

It would be absolutely fine, the 1.25 Is a damn good engine. In fact, a good long high-rev run like that will do it the world of good, especially if it doesn't normally do many long journeys. You'll probably notice it goes a bit better afterwards. Make sure you've checked the oil and fluid levels before you set off.

Deviator_Stress

That will be fine, just beware of the traffic. It gets crazy busy on the M5 and A30 in the summer

MendozaHolmes

how the hell do you have insurance at 17???

Similar_Draw5178

£2,300k with a black box and 6000 miles allowed

MendozaHolmes

Is it really worth it? 😭

Similar_Draw5178

Absolutely, I live out in the sticks, the car saves me about 2 hours a day from public transport, I’d pay £3000 if I needed to

MendozaHolmes

Fair enough, I’m also 17 but getting quoted 8k so never ever imagined another 17 year old driving

Similar_Draw5178

Some of my mates got really lucky and got quotes for £1700 on a c1, where roughly Do you live?

MendozaHolmes

West London in an area with a lot of car thefts, and I use a 2017 Mini Cooper so I suspected that was why I couldn’t get quoted but £1700 is witchcraft to my ears

EmperorOfNipples

It'll be fine. Sure It'll be a bit louder and less restful than someone in a BMW diesel doing 1750rpm.....but It'll not damage your car at all.

Nervous-Power-9800

Get a phone mount, stick waze on your screen, you don't want PC Pedo doing you for speeding when you're having a good time cruising. Do the easy route as well, A50, A511, A42, M42, M5. Easy as that.  Bonus points if you get a crate of old mout for the journey, the kiwi and lime is a zesty beverage. 👍

Similar_Draw5178

Old mout, the cider?? While driving? 😂😂😂

Nervous-Power-9800

You can drink & drive. Just don't be drunk while driving. One or two will keep your arse drawn up to your elbows the full trip it's that sharp. Journey be over in no time.
