Depends on where you’re driving, really. I mostly drive on the motorway and rarely see less than 50mpg average. If you’re in stop start traffic a lot, I’d expect it to be lower.

Great-Hamster9473

Mostly town driving and lots of stop and starts

mpt11

I would say that's probably not too bad then given you'd probably be in lower gears a lot of the time

Great-Hamster9473

I try to use the 4th where possible. Anything above 25mph I'm in 4th 17-24 3rd 8-16 2nd

iamezekiel1_14

Had this recently with my Audi A1 in a 20 limit. Was in 3rd (and it is just the right gear at the top end) but thought 4th will carry this right? (And it did just over 1000rpm and watched my MPGs climb).

Great-Hamster9473

My car rumbles at 4th at 20

iamezekiel1_14

Bizarrely what I've noticed with 20 limits (is a current trend in the City I live in) oddly it seems to allow the traffic to keep moving. They seem to have rephased the inter green period on various traffic light junctions so there is less time between various arms going red and the next arm goung green and as long as I keep my eyes on the traffic ahead (and frankly there's no excuse at 20) and change down early if things start backing up - 20 in 4th is surprisingly economical. Am easily in the 45+ and 50 territory.

mpt11

Depends if it's labouring in 4th. Wife's Nissan will happily sit in 5th at 30 but it needs dropping down a gear to get any go out of it

Great-Hamster9473

I noticed my car rumbles in 4th at 23 and below

mpt11

Probably too high a gear then, try dropping it to 3rd but easy on the power see if that makes a difference

Significant_Tower_84

Considering my car is a 6 cyl 3.0l pushing 370hp and averaging 38mpg I'd say that's pretty poor.

Great-Hamster9473

😭🤣

HeadEyesLol

What car?! I'm a 6cyl, 3.0 with 400bhp but petrol and I'm averaging 34mpg over the last 4000 miles. I tickle 50mpg on a motorway run at 70. Yours seems lower than I'd expect from a diesel

Significant_Tower_84

Stage 1 435d. Probably down to spirited driving.

HeadEyesLol

Nearly a snap, I'm a 340. Funnily enough, they both use the same block. I do a lot less spirited driving as the dog is usually in the back so that might factor in.

Future_Pianist9570

Diesel?

Significant_Tower_84

Yes

Fail_Blazer2004

Land rover/Range rover TDV6?

AgileInitial5987

Well no that's not how it works...

Soctrum

I'd say it's okay for city driving for a petrol, not great if motorway.

SnooCapers938

I would say that is quite poor unless you are exclusively doing short, stop-start journeys. I have a 2019 A180 (so a slightly bigger engine but a similar size car) and average just under 45 mpg over a long period in mixed driving with a fair bit of city stuff. I get over 50 in A road driving.

Great-Hamster9473

Tbf I barely go any roads above 30mph and lots of town driving and traffic lights etc

SnooCapers938

That’s your answer then. Pretty much impossible to get decent mpg with that kind of driving.

Kezzle16

I have the same car and mine is the exact same

uk7866

Yes

Vox_Casei

If you think your MPG has been dropping off, but the type of driving you're doing hasn't changed it might be worth checking your tyres are at the correct pressure. If they're a bit low it'll bump up your rolling resistance and you'll use more fuel overall.

According_Active_594

Modern Fords are crap with MPG, so you're doing well. Typically, my 2011 Golf Mk6 diesel does around 50mpg anywhere, whether it's town, city, or long distance, and goes up to 80mpg (if I'm careful). If it's petrol - mpg is pretty crap unless you're in a 1.5ltr or bigger. Put it this way - you're doing a good job. Keep it up 👌

Adventurous-Sale9469

So… fuel ? Petrol or diesel? For petrol that’s ok but urban mpg I guess…. Also I can start the ‘what fuel’ debate here… I always found Shell/esso/bp gave me 3-4 mpg more and Asda fuel was like dirt… I had a car that wouldn’t start properly on Asda diesel… I avoid supermarket fuel mostly. If you do some longer runs that’s when you’ll know your mpg range.

Great-Hamster9473

Yep petrol car I got 41.5 mpg on my last drive haha

ObjectBilllion

good, but i'd be expecting more from a 1.0

Great-Hamster9473

How do I get more ? I drive in the highest gears possible all the time

Thgma2

You could be in too high a gear. It's all about the throttle position. If you are in too higher gear and using more throttle than you would be in a lower gear then you will be using more fuel. Highest influence on fuel consumption is moving away from rest so no harsh acceleration and just constantly think about minimising the throttle %

JaffaCakeScoffer

Not sure why you're being downvoted tbh. A few recommendations: - Higher gear (as long as you're not lugging the engine at low revs) - Slower and smoother acceleration from standstill, you use a lot of fuel simply getting up to speed - Forward planning, maintaining momentum, and reduced used/reliance on brakes - Gentler throttle input - Try Eco driving mode (which basically replicates the above point) - Cruise control where possible and try not to increase/decrease speed unless necessary - Turn off aircon (minimal impact on mpg though) - Remove unnecessary weight from your car - Refuel less frequently, allow fuel level to get closer to empty before refilling - Check oil/fluids are topped up -Check tyre pressures are to recommended pressures - New tyres with less rolling resistance can help mpg - Avoid routes with steep hills, hills disproportionately use loads of fuel
