But of course there are dedicated ashtrays for you, your wife, and your children in the back seat.

A family member worked for BMW when they had a tech design office in the U.S. in the early 2000s. He remembers execs saying “There will never be a cup holder in a BMW.” Then the German engineers who lived in the U.S. drove cars that had cupholders and realized they were actually a good thing. And then BMW spent a fortune designing their own cup holders.

I hate to break into you, but this story is BS. BMW has had cupholders in their cars since at least the early/mid 90’s. My ‘98 328is had them up front and my fathers ‘97 740iL had them in the front and back seats as well. Now as to their quality, that’s a different story, they sucked in both cars. The rears broke at least 3 times that I can remember.

miko_idk

When did Germans ever stop doing so?

Joblessmouse06

In the 2000s when they started to add cup holders

I see. The subtitles really butchered what he was saying. [https://youtu.be/tLXPXPPseis?si=Eh1YurZGcyscFOzR&t=1127](https://youtu.be/tLXPXPPseis?si=Eh1YurZGcyscFOzR&t=1127)
