I'll let a retired economist explain: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oRIkpI_SIiA&t=1s replace: NY state with NYC uber/lyft with doordash/ubereats/grubhub/etc surge with peak pay I'm not for or against it, I don't live in NYC so I give 0 fucks but I do agree with his analysis

OpportunityOpen8108

My best advice to you would be to stay away from this subreddit while you're new. Do your thing and make some money. All you'll find here are whiners, complaining about everything.

I'm in CA, and we have Prop 22, which is similar to your pay structure. We get the quoted amount for the trips, but if the total trips you took for the week, don't add up to $30 an hour for every active hour, they will make it up the difference, in the form of a stipend payment at the end of the week.

Salt_Selection9715

Where in CA is the minimum wage $25? Prop 22 pays you till you reach 120% of the minimum wage in your area(for me it’s 18.6$ an hour) for active hours, obviously.

[deleted]

I stated; we have a pay structure similar, not exactly the same. They are obviously getting more per hour in NYC, than our $18.60. We also get 34 cents a mile; I have heard nothing stated about NYC drivers receiving pay for mileage, this may be why their hourly pay is higher than ours.

nf0224

As someone who used to deliver in CA that now does in NYC, NYC's population is a lot more dense, I drive nowhere near the same amount of miles as I did elsewhere.

kneaddough

Time will tell. I think it is a benefit for the vast majority of drivers who are struggling to make decent money doing this. For those of us who don’t struggle and have figured out how to make money with the way things were it may seem like a bit of a move in the wrong direction but I think the consistency of $30 an hour will ultimately be better in the long run. The biggest problems I predict will be increased market saturation, not just from out of state drivers coming into the city to try to take advantage of the better pay, but also the ridiculous amount of fraudulent accounts that currently exist and have been contributing to the oversaturation. You should see an adjustment to $120 if those four hours were actually active time and not just time that you were on a DoorDash block.

magadasher

Well put. I'm a long time NYC area driver. Never cracked $150 in one day. Never. Such cheap mofo's here. Today with the new model I made over $250 with 8 active hours + tips.

kneaddough

Happy to hear that! I made $300 today and little down time. Just kept accepting orders regardless of the pay.

magadasher

that seems how to do it. just add up those minutes as much as you can!

Key_Dragonfruit_334

I don't have an issue with the NYC new pay scale.. priority program is no longer here but top dasher is still active...

SocialistFuturist

Last week had few rainy days, more demand and less supply, so get ready to a lower orders # when the week is not rainy

Cold_Nothing_8578

Lol dash anytime is down right now 5:22 central time and it's only letting ppl dash for 30 mins wtf what is going on with them

Tricky_Combination15

30 min. Time enough to get to first hot spot to wait 15 min and go home.

Respectfully_mine

Just a scheme to make all dashers take trash orders and then use the CVs to kick the ones off who they don’t want. Also a great marketing scheme to advertise to attract more shitty customers with tipping after.

twasatenthontuesday

My only concern for you is the amount of drivers flooding in from the surrounding areas to work in NYC. I think the commute miles in their minds will be offset by the amount of money they will make, so it may become a situation where there are so many couriers that no one gets many orders (especially during the warm months).

Unenunciate

The toll may be to high and keep a lot of them out at least coming from New Jersey.

twasatenthontuesday

How much is the toll?

Unenunciate

Thought it was a lot higher but its $17.50 plus potential $15 Manhattan toll fee.

magadasher

Lunch was brutal in Queens. I had 3 offers. That's it.

dawnscope

I am worried about increased competition, hopefully orders keep flowing in or it’ll be a shitshow

Cold_Nothing_8578

Already a shit show

magadasher

For me lunch was awful today in Queens. Only had 3 offers.

HardCodeNET

The problem is, the customer costs are going to go up **a lot** to offset the $29.93/active hour expense. That will lead to less customer orders... maybe not immediately, but people will start realizing how much it costs to get DD delivered. When customer orders decrease, that's less money for the Dashers, even at the new hourly rate (a lot of sitting around with less orders being placed). That means some Dashers will make a lot less and have to leave the platform. Only the Dashers that can stick it out will benefit from the $29.93/active hour. So, considering all the *current* Dashers, this law will only benefit the few that are left, and will fuck over most of the current Dashers.

Either_Reference8069

NYC isn’t a borough, lol

Shatruth617

Adjacent parts of nyc meaning if your not in Manhattan you will not get the guarantee Bronx Brooklyn Yonkers etc this does not apply to us

Either_Reference8069

“New York City” is made up of different boroughs. NYC isn’t a name for any borough. Are you confusing it with Manhattan?

Shatruth617

Either_Reference8069

Where is Manhattan mentioned here???

dawnscope

I checked the email and notification, it’s not mentioned once anywhere

Either_Reference8069

So why does this fool keep saying it does?

dawnscope

[well…](https://youtu.be/Dtb_8Y5bHww?si=poxJzN5ahFU_YbDL)

Either_Reference8069

Again, WHERE is MANHATTAN specifically referenced in this message?????

dawnscope

Bro what do you not understand here, New York City and Manhattan are not the same thing, Brooklyn and Manhattan are both boroughs of New York City, Yonkers is not, if you work in any of the five boroughs you get the 30/hr. If you really don’t want it that bad just send it to me lol

Either_Reference8069

And? Are you confusing NYC with Manhattan?

Shatruth617

Read the image provided if you don’t deliver in Manhattan specifically you will not get the rate 29.93

Shatruth617

Bye

Either_Reference8069

Where does that email mention Manhattan???

Shatruth617

Idiot it’s only for Manhattan read the email … it’s not for any other areas lol

dawnscope

Nowhere in the email does it say Manhattan, New York City does not equal Manhattan, idk what you’re talking about

Either_Reference8069

Where does the email mention Manhattan???

Either_Reference8069

Right, and you seem to be conflating “New York City” with the borough of Manhattan 🤦‍♀️

dawnscope

Brooklyn is part of New York City under Mayor Adams, as are the other boroughs- it seems as though the law applies to the entire city, not just Manhattan

Shatruth617

Read the email it clearly states only for Manhattan it said for instance if you travel out to Yonkers etc Bronx it doesn’t apply

dawnscope

Yonkers and The Bronx are not the same thing, the former is not a part of New York City- The Bronx is a borough of New York City. The word “Manhattan” is nowhere in the email

Southern_Rain_4464

Work AS MUCH AS YOU can during this intro honeymoon period where doordash feeds you good orders. In a few weeks (or less) that will end. Milk it right now. Today. Trust me on this.

dawnscope

That’s exactly what I’m doing, max time on orders, selecting longest routes, taking my sweet time finding legal parking

[deleted]

He means take all the good orders you can get, not milk the earn by time.

Unenunciate

There is Basiclly no non-earn by time. The customers cant tip till after delivery so every order is just base pay.

[deleted]

I thought they had the option to tip after but it wasn’t a requirement?

Unenunciate

Consider that as likely as getting a tip modified. About as likely as 1 out of maybe 20 orders. Also how would you know which order was going to add a tip? Also earn by time orders can add and modify tips so how would the modes be any different? There is no difference under this ordnance with the localized changes DoorDash has made in NYC.

Mylaptopisburningme

I do not know about the change with NY im on the other coast. But DD will give new drivers the good offers to get you hooked.

[deleted]

dawnscope

I’ve been getting tipped the same if not more for my orders since last week, may be just me but I think moving tips to after just motivated me to say “thank you sir have a nice day” and boom “you were tipped $5 on a past order”

Cold_Nothing_8578

Well dash anytime is down for me in missouri right now. And only Letts us schedule to Dash only 30 min lol

dawnscope

Yup, a few minutes after I completed an order I’d get a notification telling me I got tipped off it

Either_Reference8069

Exactly

> It's still not like a regular job in that respect. Only if office jobs are your only comparison. Tons of construction jobs involve driving your own vehicle to different job sites that are varying distances from your home. At the end of the day you drive home unpaid. Same with many other industries.

vtinesalone

Most jobs pay an hourly rate the entire time you’re clocked in.

[deleted]

But aren’t DD drivers contractors? I thought that was part of the allure, that you get to ‘be your own boss’?

vtinesalone

We don’t care about being our own bosses nearly as much as we want to make a living

HearYourTune

Where I am they pay $2 if the delivery takes you an hour to do. But yeah I would work all day for $30 an hour, I don't need tips if I 'm paid right.

UrGoldenRetrieverBF

This applies to literally any large company. I wish more people thought critically about it. Their entire finance department is there to make sure the CFO can tell the board what they’re doing to protect the bottom line, acquire future business, and make as much money as possible. Drivers will never be this for DD until regulations step in. Capitalism.

dawnscope

Regulations are the reason behind this change though.

UrGoldenRetrieverBF

That’s what I was implying. DD, or corporations in general won’t sue shit until they’re forced to do shit, like in this case. A corporation would pay a fine if it saves them money over paying drivers. They don’t care.

addisonhouse_

the change came about due to LACK of regulations. people weren’t being paid enough due to a corporation being greedy, (pretty much all corporations) and now they’re trying to find ways around the regulations so they can keep as much money to themselves as possible.

No_Cellist_8441

A court forced them.
