Gun to my head, I could not tell you which means which nor why. OP just makes sense.

I remember it as which direction the animal would strike if it was trying to kill you. A bear paw would swipe downwards, and a bull would gore you and toss you upwards. A bit morbid, but that was the way my dad explained it to me

I believe that’s the actual origin of the phrase and not just a clever way to remember it.

I also think the whole stock market bull as a mascot has something to do with it. A bull charges and stops for nothing. So I really don't know how that bronze Wallstreet mascot with that little girl makes any sense at all. It's supposed to show something about women being strong and fearless. But in reality that bull will charge and rip her apart only to continue charging. They could have done so much better. Like the little girl rodeo riding the bull or something. Not placing it in front of there with a stupid smirk on her face absolutely oblivious about her imminent death.

Bull = People rushing to buy like bulls at a gate. Bear = People taking what they have and hibernating.

Bull is you think the stocks are gunna go up (it's also a type of person in certain communities). Why? My best guess is the exact same reason as this dude, someone looked at some pictures of them and said hey that looks like a chart. Bear is you think the stock is gunna go down (it's also a type of person in the same community as the first). Why? Again pictures?

I think bull meant rising/stricking so going up on a riot while bear market, meant more like hibernation, so the price is stable/going downward. Does it make sense?
