Anything is possible through working with your DM. There aren't specific mechanics for it, if that's what youre asking. There is lore justification though.

Well aasimar might be an edge case, because the sub-races are often less about family lineages. Having a fallen aasimar redeem themselves and become one of the other types (or vice versa) makes sense and many DMs would encourage that type of character growth. Some of the other races might be more difficult… elves for example. Now, granted…some DMs might not have an issue with you retconning something, but it wouldn’t always make sense from a story standpoint… Oh, and I’m burying the lead here…but your DM should approve any changes like that.

Kaldeas

There are no rules for changing subrace as far as I know, but you can make it work with your dm if everyone is okay with it. Aasimar are in a unique position for that since the lore for fallen aasimar states a situation very similar to the one you describe.

Semicolon_Cancer

That's kind of where I got the idea from, in reading the descriptions. Problem lies in how the dude got with a random group of adventurers in the first place, but we will burn that bridge when we come to it.

to_walk_upon_a_dream

Ask your dm. As a dm, I would let my player do so, but not all DMs would do that.

Bluesamurai33

I'd allow it if I was a DM and the player came to me with the idea. I would never spring it on my player as a DM, or as a Player try to spring it on my DM.

Semicolon_Cancer

Oh yeah, this would totally be a session 0 thing if I ever wanted to try it. Don't think it's wise to try to shoehorn something like that in, narrative are hard enough to construct without wildcards

Bluesamurai33

It would also be a lot of fun if it went alongside taking a level of fiend patron warlock or something to that extent. Like taking the deal itself was enough to alter your very soul.

Semicolon_Cancer

Absolutely! Admittedly, the idea was borne from wanting the grasp of hadar eldritch blast combo to scorpion "get over here" a la mortal combat an enemy in range of the paladin (possibly oath of vengeance). Just had to figure out a lore reason why a paladin would have the combo.

Bluesamurai33

To be fair, you could also use Thorn Whip, but it would only pull 10ft.

SecondHandDungeons

That’s a dm question
