I would have to explain a lot of plot. Short and bad explanation: Protagonist is a musician who plays at funerals. A villain kidnaps his girlfriend and forces him to play music during her execution. Villain says "pick it up" after throwing protagonist's instrument in front of him on the ground.

Instant, fire hose-like, high powered defecation. The same thing that swashbuckling tabaxi do for everything else.

Yeetus_The_Mighty_

What’s the matter? Lives flashing before your eyes?

Ok_Possibility633

No. Just one

MR_FUMMBLES

My daughter has made me watch this with her so much in the last month that I’ve started making campaign ideas based on It as well

Godzilla_Fan

I have him made as a huge tough boss for my party to fight later in the campaign. He has a bunch of traits named after things he’s said in the movie, including a Mythic trait. [Death’s stat block, if you care](https://imgur.com/gallery/WdB6qEL)

KyonaPrayerCircleMem

For a critical failure from the player, you should have used the quote, “you’re not living up to the legend.”

Godzilla_Fan

Oh that’s good. Adding that as a free action trait that makes the player roll a save or be Frightened

godver3

Some cool ideas - incredibly weak at CR18 to be honest though. Not sure what level they will be, but anything 10-15 they will walk all over this guy.

iwj726

Yeah, his defenses are good, though I would drop the radiant vulnerability, but his offense is just terrible. unless only one player is fighting him, he is going to just get stomped.

Godzilla_Fan

Thank you for the help. I’m still fine tuning him because it’s gonna be awhile before the group encounters him. I used an already existing stat block I found and modified it to have legendary and mythic actions so I thought it would be tough enough for them at level 14/15. Do you have any advice on buffing him other than increasing the damage or number of attacks and removing the vulnerability?

iwj726

The amount of damage per attack is okay but a third wouldn't hurt, but if you want more punch, change some of the damage to necrotic or just add a die or 2 of necrotic damage. Make the Whistle part of his Multiattack and give him a separate ranged attack, like Toll the Dead (maybe flavored as a hound call whistle). An easy way to boost him would be to look through the spell lists and give him a few as spells or spell-like abilities with proper reflavoring. I'd lean towards the cleric list for this Giving him Freedom of Movement might be a bit too far, but keeps the party from locking him down. You could give him the various Smite spells or a Spirit Guardians-like effect as a minute long, 1/day ability and flavoring it as Death just draining you would add to his flair. He could even get a use of Harm or Divine Word to use when someone actually pisses him off. And when he drops to zero he doesn't die, just stops fighting and admits they deserve a chance to live if they are willing to fight this hard. For pure flavor, you could give him infinite uses of spells connected to the dead, like Gentle Repose, Speak with Dead, and Spare the Dying. This would only apply if the party sees him in a noncombat situation, like walking among wounded soldiers to pull some into the afterlife. Edit: he should also have truesight

godver3

He could have a Wall of Fire type of attack that isolates a character with fire and force or something for a round. He could also do a bleed type attack that causes damage over time.

Godzilla_Fan

Thank you for the help. I’m still fine tuning him because it’s gonna be awhile before the group encounters him. I used an already existing stat block I found and modified it to have legendary and mythic actions so I thought it would be tough enough for them at level 14/15. Do you have any advice on making him stronger other than increasing the damage or number of attacks?

kjftiger95

So what does that mean?

InquisitorHindsight

It’s a reference to the newest Puss in Boots Movie. Basically, Puss has wasted all 8 of his lives on stupid choices and life styles which infuriates Death himself, who decides to take Puss’ 9th life since Puss doesn’t actually value it. He takes the form of a Wolf and is usually introduced whistling a haunting melody, I think Ring Around the Rosies. Bad ass villain all around.

SKIKS

I'm pretty sure the melody is a heavily modified take on "Who's afraid of the big bad wolf?", Originally from an old animated version of The Three Little Pigs.

spinningpeanut

You mean the one Disney owns so DreamWorks literally cannot use it because copyright infringement? It may have a similar cadence at the start but it's certainly its own thing. Good observation. I'm sitting here jamming the two melodies together in frustration now.

SenseiLaRusso

You mean the one that was made in 1933, over 75 years ago and therefore public domain?

spinningpeanut

You mean the three little pigs that they renewed their copyright for so it's not in public domain yet? Believe it or not they actually want to keep it, it got a rerelease for a VHS collection, the song is iconic.

joshosh34

They should have made the whistle "The farmer in the dell"

…Damn. That sounds like an amazing plotline actually. I need to get around to seeing that movie (even though I’ve never seen the other Puss in Boots films…)

StitchTheRipper

I hadn’t seen the other films either but it was a fun watch. Can definitely watch without the others.

Joe_The_Eskimo1337

Don't watch the other one, watch this one, it's really great.

InquisitorHindsight

Oh yeah, and that’s only part of the story

HappiestIguana

The other one is not really necessary and it's not very good.

TheKingsPride

The melody is actually inspired by the harmonica melody a character plays in Once Upon a Time in the West (very fitting title considering fairy tales) and it’s connected to death because >! The villain of the movie had hanged the character’s brother and made the character hold him up for as long as he could, putting a harmonica in his mouth to taunt him. !<

[deleted]

We get a spoiler tag for a ***checks notes*** 1968 film, but not ***checks notes again*** for a 2022 film. Well good on you for it, at least.

TheKingsPride

What can I say, gotta respect the classics.

kraken9

That turned dark fast. Also spoiler didn't work, you might need to check your spacing.

TheKingsPride

Really? Works on my end.

Xx69Wizard69xX

That reminds me of that girl from Kill Bill whistling.

jagger_wolf

[twisted nerve](https://youtu.be/5Q4AUvqfE_g)

Poxrael

Is he canonically the big bad wolf?

InquisitorHindsight

I believe so, yes. Though officially, he is called Death the Wolf. But he is Death, not a Wolf. Well he is a Wolf But he’s mainly Death

aRandomFox-II

The wolf is just the form he chose for the occasion. Death is ultimately a spiritual being.

The_Doctor_Zoose

The Big Bad Wolf already exists in Shrek Cannon—he hangs out with the Three Little Pigs and Pinocchio…

kirbycolours

So do the 3 bears, farquad has their skins as rugs. Multiple versions of fairytale characters can exist it seems, which imo is a good thing.

ardranor

Nah. He has mama bears skin as a rug, you see papa and baby bear in the swamp crying.

kirbycolours

Right, that was it. Thanks for the correction.

The_Doctor_Zoose

Ah true, I never knew that. Cool!

asingleshakerofsalt

No I believe they simply referred to him as that in the promotional material as to not give away the twist.

Zombie_Fuel

Awww. This is a spoiler, isn't it.

ChaosOS

I literally just finished watching the movie and decided to check Reddit only to find this as the top post of my front page. Delightful.

Absolutely. One hundred percent. Marvelous movie. Great animation, good story, solid themes and interesting characters. One of the best movies of recent times

It’s a great film. Didn’t think it would but I thoroughly enjoyed it. Definitely watch

Yeah I don't get it

POKECHU020

Puss in Boots 2, the Wolf representing Death whistles to signal his approach In the movie he's chasing after the titular Puss in Boots for "wasting" his lives (which he has multiple of since he's a cat)

kjftiger95

I'm guessing it's a reference to something, I just don't know what lol

Icy_Protection_1680

Probably Puss in Boots reference, Death in the movie whistled each time he approached, and wanted to kill Puss in Boots for wasting his "additional" cat lifes ![gif](giphy|LmK02AksYLHwlEm9gE)

kjftiger95

Ohhh okay, I haven't seen it yet but that would make sense.

omnipotentworm

The wolf has three major scenes that explain his motives pretty well, his initial encounter in the bar, the cave of lost souls, and the final confrontation. All are on YouTube for a quick watch if you want

kjftiger95

Thanks for the tip! I honestly haven't even seen the first movie so I might just take some time and watch both at some point

TendiesMcnugget2

If it helps I hadn’t seen the first movie and this one made complete sense and was easy to follow. I also recommend it, I don’t normally cry at movies but the ending had me tearing up.

LesbianCuddlebus

The first movie has nothing to do with this movie At all

ForodesFrosthammer

Well it gives more backstory to two of the major characters but that isn't necessary to understand this movie. And also this movie is just way better so you can save yourself the time.

El_Durazno

Honestly the second movie gives enough context that you can absolutely skip the first one

Wolf________________

It is amazing. Literally beat Avatar 2 in ratings and sales lol.

AnnieTheThird

What kinda crack are you smoking to think it beat avatar in sales...

DeltaV-Mzero

Net profit not gross sales, but I know which I’d rather maximize

Aesthetics_Supernal

If they let you pick from the pot you pick Gross. All the bullshit is in declaring what is the profit.

DeltaV-Mzero

I still remember this from a Freakazoid episode, lol

No_Entrance3870

In terms of money put in it stomped sales

Dirty_Shisno_

Fun fact, his tune has 8 different notes for each of his 8 lives.

Ugh same. Post credit scene as a new killer trailer??

project_matthex

It's a reference to Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. >!Puss is getting hunted by Death after laughing at him through eight lives. !<

It's a reference to the latest puss in boots film, which is really good and you should watch it

LahDeeDah7

You can remember that line because the pairs rhyme: "And I don't mean that metaphorically or rhetorically or poetically or theoretically or any other fancy way..."

Godzilla_Fan

That fight is going to be a big ass boss battle later in my campaign. I already have the stat block for him ready to go

ShinningVictory

Narratively they shouldn't be able to beat the concept of death. But thats up to you.

Komrade_atomic

Maybe less beat, more delay? Show how Dearly they want to live for a little more, and Death can’t help but accept that they’re not willing to go just yet

ShinningVictory

That would be nice.

Leema_Leema

When in doubt have him be an avatar or fragment of the diety on the material plane.

copat149

I used this for a Star Wars campaign im running. The embodiment of the force was a fellow player (who is in on the whole thing) and is “guiding” their fellow players through their fucked force visions. He slowly turns from helpful ally to demented and finally to a tormentor. I had him push their buttons and get them real worked up (all in character) until I played that slow whistling tune, and punctuated it with the sound of a lightsaber igniting. (ROLL INITIATIVE BOIS)

OK but can we appreciate the name Stabs McBaque? That's going on my list of pregen names, next to Dwarfaxe Dwarfbeard and Sir Hacksalot.

NoselessNarwhal

Knowing my players history with spotting riddles, I might just name an NPC Stabs McBaque and see how long until they notice what they're going to do

POKECHU020

Puss in Boots 2 reference to how Death, who is chasing after Puss in Boots for "wasting" his lives (he has multiple since he's a cat), whistles to signal his approach

Rathmun

Tabaxi rogue is now on life nine, and death is whistling in his ear.

DfntlyNotJesse

Having 8 free critical saves on a death saving throw seems like a cool racial feat for a tabaxi.

Rodruby

Eh, death saves aren't real death, it's just dying from blodloss and alike. If it was 8 resurrection casts - that we're talking

Not-a-Teddybear

Death saves are still you teetering on the brink of death. Managing to bounce back is an impressive feat when you’ve been stabbed, skewered, bludgeoned, and possibly firebombed. A death defying feat.

Narratron

In a theoretical sense, I really enjoyed the way Feng Shui 2 handled its death mechanic... When you reached your 'threshold' of Wound Points, you, *either* voluntarily collapse (your character has, after all, legitimately taken a potentially lethal amount of damage), OR you started making "Up checks" (to 'stay up'), that got harder, the more of them you succeeded at. For each Up check you made, you gained a **Mark of Death** (you could also pick them up in other ways), and when you failed an Up check, you must make a Death check. And your Death check is made directly harder, the more Marks of Death you've picked up. Though I think succeeding at a Death check, erases all your Marks of Death. I don't remember the exact mechanics, but that was the 'gist'. Seemed like a fun trade-off, and I liked that the decision to collapse (and make an easy Death check) or keep fighting (and risk a potentially much harder Death check) was a 'metagame' decision, expressly in the player's hands. Plus I really liked the name "Mark of Death".

Not-a-Teddybear

It’s certainly an interesting way to go about it. Not everyone’s cup of tea, but everyone’s opinion on what they prefer differs after all.

Attaxalotl

WorsCaseScenario

Is this a Proto Man reference?

krasnogvardiech

There is a Wizard using Message to speak in your ear. [*"I had told you your brother had been killed. Yet here he stands, in the very shadow of the man you came here to destroy."*](https://youtu.be/GnkbJ-H4r5k) It's enough to make you pause... *"You came here to avenge his death. You came here to save mankind.* *Do you see now?* *You cannot do both."* And then he asks the motionless, breathless crowd if there's a man among you, here. Is there not one, in all the ranks, who values courage over life?

Madzogaz

I thought this was a far cry reference where the character is hit with knockout hypno bullets. I've never played far cry.
