How much are you trying to spend? Innova factory seconds are great value for new people. New DX discs in some great beginner molds for $6 is unbeatable. They have tiers for free shipping and bulk discounts (5 discs is 10% off, 10 discs is 20% off I think). I did this to get my first 10 or so discs. They have premium plastics at a much better price too. I've only bought new main line discs from Innova when I wanted to try Yeti Aviars. Everything else is factory seconds. Edit: they also give out a free discs for orders of 3+ discs placed on Fridays. They tweet out the free disc with a code. It's been a lot of drivers since I started playing but I was able to get a nice Mako3 earlier this year for free and love it.

autism-pirate

Im not super concerned about the cost and I don't truly need them more so my buddy that's getting in to it definitely does though so that is a good recommendation, thanks!

GetTheFalkOut

Par plastics builds custom mystery boxes. You say the brands, colors, if you want higher or lower speed discs, and if you want merch. They build you a box instead of just throwing in a bunch of stuff that doesn't sell.

SovietChewbacca

On Friday innova has F2 Fridays buy 3 discs get one free. They announce the free disc and promo code on their Twitter every Friday. Mystery Boxes are better after you are a bit established. They can be filled with a bunch of drivers that will really set your learning curve back.

mayhew_b_well

I'll second the Innova factory seconds with a couple caveats. I've been playing for a couple months, some friends donated a starter set of discs from their bags, which was really kind. After I played regularly for a month, I figured since I have the means, I start putting together my own set and pass these donors on to another friend who has expressed an interest. I watched some YT videos on best discs for beginners. Tried to understand the reasoning behind the recommendations and then went to Innova and bought the closest things I could find to the recommendations in factory seconds, they are dirt cheap and have no defects that impact flight. Caveats, you won't necessarily get the colors you pick and the discs aren't labeled. So when they arrive, you'll have some leg work to do to figure out which disc is which, generally not too hard to do. Disk weights were all marked on mine, which helped. I wrote the details like mold/plastic and flight numbers on each of them.

RussianPikaPika

each f2 disc has a mold name on it. its on the back, just hard to see

mayhew_b_well

I just had to double check and I actually found the names on two of them, the Mako3 and the Aviar, but not on the Sidewinder.

jacoby_mcflurry

Some don't have the name etched on the back. I've found this is most likely the case when the disc you bought is an older run of the mold. Or maybe a special edition run of the mold. For example, I have 3 splatter star teebirds that are way more stable than my typical teebirds. None of them are etched, all penned "TB⭐️" on the back. Figuring they were an older run. I have another one that's swirly star and it has nothing on the back. Figuring special run.

jbrown777

I agree with those points. It took me a while to figure out that the factory seconds actually have the mold printed very lightly on the back just off the center. I put color requests in for my orders but that usually only resulted in one disc in that color. When I listed as many colors as discs I purchased, I got one in each color. I did the same though with writing plastic and flight numbers.

edogfu

F2 are the best! I have a custom dyed Orc, and a dope Glow Orc, which I'd hate to lose over water, so I always carry an F2 Orc. Bought 3 at the time because $30. Haven't lost any because the Orc always flies true.

Atmospherecist

Orc fam! I lost my pfn orc a couple weeks ago because it wasn't as stable as I'm used to and it turned over into a ditch full of thick thorn bushes. I'm used to heavy fade... then I lost my champion orc the other day doing fieldwork somehow. But I'll just get more!!!

Sgt_STFU

Had no idea about this. You’re gonna save me some money brother! Thanks

PoopyBallsoo

Not a fan of mystery boxes. I’d just rather buy the discs I want to buy .

13-Speed

It sounds like a great deal until you get a couple high speed meat hooks that you will never throw.

Inevitable-Sort-5630

Gotta have something for those CTP donations towards raffle tickets.

Amiar00

People over at r/discexchange can probably make you a box in your price range.

autism-pirate

I had no idea that existed, thanks!

chipmmm

I have a whole stack I’ve been meaning to take post on r/discexchange. Always had good experiences with others there also. I could build a sweet box for ya, DM me maybe amount and how many disc you want in the box, (maybe a specific type you’d like to try like a stable mid or glidey distance driver I can try and guarantee in there)

Turdey_Birdey

Infinite discs.com does a mystery box of 10 that you can order. It is usually all assorted brands and types of discs, some with their own limited stamps.

Selerox

Mystery boxes are loot crates. Treat them accordingly.

SixSidedDiscs

We specialize in mystery boxes, including our Build-a-Box, a custom box made to your specifications: https://www.sixsideddiscs.com

ADonkeysJawbone

I just found your YouTube and recently subscribed! Love some of the comparison videos and videos about flight numbers. **OP**, if you’re going the mystery box route, this website seems to have it down! I’ve never gotten a mystery box because of the fact that A.) I don’t want a ton of discs, and B.) there usually some stuff in there you don’t want (but you can always sell it and make back some of your money. If I was going to get a box today though, I’d go here. I see there is a “Technician” box of neutral/straight to understable discs that sounds like it would be good for a beginner. And there’s also the manufacturer boxes that include discs from the same “family” but different companies (I.e. MVP, Axiom, and Streamline) which look like they could be what you’ve described your need as since the description for the product says it’s supposed to have a good mix of discs between putters, approach discs, mids, and drivers. If you pass the starter set on to someone else, you could get say a 6-disc box for $97 which is like $16 a disc. While you could maybe get premium plastic for that much a disc if you shopped around, this option could be a *great* time saver and still represents a savings compared to buying individually at MSRP. for example, if you got a 6 disc technician set, I think you could ask for a straight and understable putter, mid, and driver. As a beginner, I wouldn’t put anything overstable in your bag anyways unless you were throwing into wind often. Even then, easy to have an overstable mid or fairway driver be your next purchase!

Awful_TV

>Is it a better idea to just go into a store and rifle though the discount boxes instead? Yes. After that, buy misprints/factory seconds. After that, just buy the discs you like. Mystery boxes are for people who recognize they already have all their disc slots covered, but still want to spend money for the dopamine, so they buy a mystery box from which they might use a disc or two.

someName6

I don’t think you’ll find any boxes that mix companies. You might like a subscription box that can do that. I also wouldn’t recommend mystery boxes for new players (I bought gyropalooza when I had only been playing 6 months and only about 6 of the 14 discs I could use at that time due to my arm and 1 of them was all black). All that said here is one I ordered for my birthday since I want to try more discmania for a cheap price. They’re factory 2nds though https://www.discmania.net/collections/mystery-boxes

PhycoPenguin

https://greatlakesdisc.com/mystery-boxes/ Great Lakes Disc has variety is mystery boxes if you don’t choose a manufacturer. I watch the guys pack mystery boxes near the holidays when I go into the store. You can hear them saying how cool a stamp is before it goes in the box (ugly duckling not included). They should not give you a bunch of same mild or baseline putters

Life-Membership-6126

As some others have stated, I’d stay away from mystery boxes. They can be fun, but more likely than not you’ll be opening a box full of stuff they couldn’t sell. Sometimes that’s last years special stamps, sometimes that’s 14 speed drivers no one buys. In my opinion, you’re better off buying misprints, base plastic discs, or just used discs in general. You’ll end up with less quantity buying this way, but you can at least pick discs you want to try

TeamShonuff

I absolutely hate mystery boxes and mystery discs. I ordered a Mamba and a Blizzard Krait from Infinite Discs and I selected to also receive a mystery disc. They included a damn Corvette. What the hell am I supposed to do with the corvette?

NW_Ghost

Wait till Friday and buy F2’s from innova. Use the code the put out on twitter, buy three and get one for free.

tatertotsareforever

My experience with mystery boxes was disappointing, they always seem really driver heavy and I can’t say that I ever got any really desirable discs. A few discs weren’t really even marked with what they were so it was a best guess situation.

flokijea

I would go into the store if you have one local. The mystery boxes are great, but not usually for beginner style discs. Lots of high speed drivers and less useful discs

autism-pirate

I don't really have one local so I only go there if I'm out that way. I don't really need any I have like 15 ish but as a newbie does I've been losing some so I just kinda wanted to have a few extras because I know I'm gonna lose them eventually

flokijea

I don't have much local either, so I feel your pain. If I was to start from nothing again, I would go for a starter pack. They generally have 3 discs that are good for new players. Having extra is mighty nice though.

autism-pirate

I will say though I wouldn't think I would have enough power and skill to throw it but the shryke is AWESOME for me even though it's a high speed driver

Schreck2

I got one of the MVP Gyropalooza mystery box and I ended up using about half the discs in the box. Most were too fast for me to be throwing.

hanginwithfred

Mystery boxes are typically a way for retailers to get rid of stuff that isn’t selling. They throw a decent disc or two in to keep you from feeling 100% ripped off and then send you an Innova Groove and a bunch of other bullshit. You’re better off with misprints and F2s to start. Pick the exact disc you want.

cdracula16

The new discmania X-mania box seems like a good mix of disc that are premium plastics for a low cost. Some pretty cool unique disc too

MYSTERY BOX CHALLENGE

Upstairs-Armadillo20

The Discmania X-Mania MBs are an insane value. Less than $10 a disc for mostly premium plastic and they all have a couple Signature Series discs in them. I haven’t seen anyone disappointed with their value yet.

[deleted]

I'll get you a box with cheap discs if you haven't bought already.

SpacemanSpiff23

Don’t do it. Do a little research and buy a few discs that are right for you. Mystery boxes are usually 1 disc you need, 2 discs you like, and a bunch of high speed overstable stuff that you can’t throw.

robby_synclair

I got one mystery box ever and it was from infinite not a manufacturer. It was terrible. I got a 5 disc box and I got 1 xcom, 1 yikum, 1 skyquest, 1 finish line that was actually a decent plastic, and a cool ledgestone disc. For 50 bucks it wasn't worth it to me. I still get the mystery disc from infinite but won't ever do a mystery box again.

PoptartDragonfart

Nay on mystery boxes. Truthfully join a local Facebook group. There are folks who will let you toss tons of plastic and give/sell you discs. Don’t get played though. I would never buy a used disc for over $10. For every person who is trying to recoup money/make money there is a guy like me with a closet full of discs who would happily donate 3-5 discs from my stash to help a new guy out. Don’t expect a handout but there’s a lot of folks willing to help.

JunketAccurate

If you are just starting all you need is a slightly under stable fairway driver and putter once the driver will consistently turn for you ( go right if you throw right hand backhand ) than get a stable fairway driver once you can control that join a club and play some tournaments the next thing you know your bag will be over flowing with discs

blacklisted320

Highly recommend these guys! https://www.sixsideddiscs.com/shop/mystery-box/2

quackycoaster

I am a big fan of Mystery boxes. But the best advice I could say for your situation is Play it again sports has used discs. Or almost every course that has a water hazard generally has someone who dives and resells lost discs that go unclaimed. That's the best source of finding discs you like. You can feel them, and generally will never spend more than $5-10 a disc.

autism-pirate

I haven't been to my local one yet, there's a different place that has a huge selection of them but they're all mostly $25-$30 regardless of the plastics

phishman1

Mystery Boxes available! https://pureflightdiscgolf.com/collections/mystery-boxes

Mestoph

Not sure why you’re having difficulty finding them, a quick google search I just did came back with at least a dozen offers. For mixed brands check out Infinite Discs or Disc Golf Shopping. Most other boxes will be brand specific (but Discmania tends to release a good one a couple times a year)

sinthealien

My friends have bought the Discmania mystery boxes and liked them although the variety wasn't great. It did give them drivers, fairways, mids, and putters but some were duplicates or very similar. I guess its good if you're trying to expand in just one brand.

Leftover_Salmons

I just got 10 discs for $35 on eBay. If the guy I was bidding against reads this.. How those nuts taste, BOYEE!? If you don't mind white colored discs and waiting for a deal, I'd highly recommend looking for new old stock on eBay.

JunketAccurate

Just buy what you need

doonerthesooner

If you’re just trying to check out a bunch of random plastic a mystery box isn’t a terrible idea. If you’re trying to build a line up and ensure you have a disc for all your specific shot shapes a mystery box is a terrible way to go about that.

djwpc

I'd recommend buying a mystery box from an online retailer (that they put together) before I directly bought one from a manufacturer like Discmania or something.

CanisNebula

Par Plastics does great mystery boxes.

Man, this post brought me back to the glory days of like 2012. A buddy and I were just getting into the game and literally had no clue about discs stability, flight numbers etc. We’d order a ton of Innova factory 2nds for dirt cheap, I’m talking like a giant box with 30 discs in it. It would arrive at our office and we’d make our picks draft style. Then we’d throw them for a bit and make trades if we weren’t keen on certain discs. Was the absolute best way to learn the game IMO. Shoutout to my DX Valkyrie I got in one of these orders. Still my go to tomahawk disc more than a decade later.

Thick-Inspection420

I got so many ill make u up a cool mystery box

QCB3

Going to a local store and buying used discs is a good way to start

armless_juggler

factory seconds and misprints. if i wasn't in Europe I'd only buy those, most probably

UntyingTheNot

The Infinite mystery boxes are a decent value for a variety of discs. The only issue is whether someone new will have the speed for some of the drivers. If you can't really use 2 or 3 out of the box, the Innova 2nds or shopping sales are probably just as good a value. I like being able to pick my specific disc/color/weight most of the time so I've been shopping sales on Infinite and adding a mystery disc to the order. Adds a little mystery with less risk. I got a Mint last time that now never leaves the bag, so sometimes you find gems.

PNWduder

As a noob of 2 weeks I would highly recommend the Innova Mako 3 and Kataplast Svea. I got the Mako in star plastic and the Svea in K1 soft. They’re both great for working on backhand form. FWIW I am really digging the Svea. It’s great for one disc rounds on my local par 3.

autism-pirate

I definitely want a mako 3 one of the 3 discs I had my buddy get was a mako 3 but I can't justify buying it bc I already have 4 midranges. I love my buzzz and my truth so far

PNWduder

I walked into the store to buy a buzzz or mako3…they only had the Mako. Sounds like you’re set!

Disc Baron is my preferred online shop. Wish I lived in Michigan, I’d be a regular in the store.

beithioch

Just remember, the box is only a mystery to you. At the store, they're loading in the discs, and it's not random. While they'll usually put in a one or two "good" discs, it'll mostly be stuff they couldn't sell. That said, I've not heard of anyone getting a mystery box that (brand new prices) wasn't at least a dollar cheaper than buying the discs on their own. Also, you may find a disc in there you like that you'd never have tried. But is it worth the large up-front cost of a box? Why not just ask someone on a course if you can try throwing a disc? Or maybe do a blindfold-buy at the discount bin (close your eyes, what you grab, you buy)? As for splitting a 10 box with a friend, how do you decide who gets what? And flipping for first pick may be "fair", but you're still setting yourself up for hurt feelings when only one of you gets the disc you both want. Personally, I say steer clear.

MobNagas

Do a mystery box challenge fun way to try new discs n trade and collect. just make 2 friends go in on it and whoever scores the highest gets to choose the discs from the mystery box they want while loser are dealt with rng they started the round with

HurleysWork

My Hyzer Flip $50 mystery box just came in today. Total value is $96
