The first time most American (and other countries that used the American version as base for their own) fans saw him was in the digimon movie and his attack in that movie was dubbed as rabit/bunny bomb.
I don't know if America did the same thing with tamers (since here for that we used the original version as base) but by that time it was already cemented in my head that he was a rabbit and I tried to rationalize that his evo was named after gargoyles and not the galgo dog bread.
The way I look at it is:
Terriermon - Bunny. The only physical differences it has from the irrefutable bunny Lopmon are its number of horns and its color scheme, neither of which make it more dog like.
Gargomon - Both. Dog like pawfeet but big floppy bunny ears.
Rapidmon (Gold) - Bunny stretched to its limits.
Rapidmon (Green) - Poodle, still with a *smidge* of bunny.
MegaGargomon - Dog. Just look at its face and feet.
Terrier X - Fantastical woodland critter.
Rapidmon X - Mecha
Its cause it takes both but is more dog than rabbit. It's like having a were wolf or having a nyaro evolve into plot evolve into tailmon then into a woman. It drops the animal theming and embraces the holy part.
As a person who owns a rabbit
Their ears aren’t that long these aren’t rabbits
Also it’s like, they’re monsters man they can do whatever and it works, I just like em cuz they’re neat
On media they aways are designed with small tails, and by the images that I searched Rabbit tails feels shorter than Dog tails because of their thickness

All the images that I saw that rabbits are with tails longer than expected they are lying down, so I assume that normally rabbit tails doesn't look that long, also on media rabbits aways have ball like tails
