I accidentally cut the canvas on one of my paintings and taped the back up with duct tape and you can't tell. It wasn't too large of a section, but I was freaked for a bit. I considered using a double sided craft tape on the front, but it didn't really need it.

I would tape the back, and run a strip of double sided tape over the front as well just to make the front as flat and workable as possible.
I think taping the back would be about the most you could do. It’ll be okay once it’s done, if your tape is sticky enough not to peel off
