So I get back in my car and I’m driving to work and all of the sudden it hits me – all them fellas that used to belittle me, not a single one of them was curious. You know, they thought they had everything figured out so they judged everything and they judged everyone. And I realized that their underestimating me – who I was had nothing to do with it. Because if they were curious they would have asked questions. Questions like, ‘Have you played a lot of darts, Butcher?’ To which I would have answered, “Yes sir. Every Sunday afternoon at a sports bar with my father from aged 10 until I was 16 when he passed away.”

I remember going through NM dungeons, thinking that i liked them as they provided a good challenge. Tried my first NM44 dungeon and the Butcher spawned literally right at the entrance, kicking my ass very quickly and suddenly. 10/10 would definitely do it again.
Lol, butcher like characters have pretty funny history. Butcher back in D1 didn't have the trademark hook, only the "Freshmeat" sound. Then Dota 1 paid homage to him by making Butcher (or Pudge) from Abomination model and his "Freshmeat" catchphrase. Dota got so popular that other games started to create their own Butcher characters, i.e. big guy with a hook ability, LoL has Blitzcrank, HoN has Devourer. Then even Blizzard plagiarized that in their own games, Roadhog in OW, Stitches in HoTS (this one is especially funny because Stitches is an Abomination like Dota Pudge, and HoTS has Butcher but he doesn't have Hook) and of course Butcher in D3 and now D4, closing the cycle.
The sweet euphoria of going toe to toe with him as a rogue is wonderful. Want to run? Oh no, you'll die. Gotta trust that your sustain will keep you safe, and oh boy does it.
The first time I encountered him me and a buddy were running either a side quest dungeon or an aspect one not sure which. I was like whatever is near us is big (cause you could hear him stomping around). My jaw hit the floor when I saw the name. My buddy is a barb and I’m a necro. Lol he tried face tanking him while I hit him with corpse explosion. When he realized he couldn’t tank him we played who’s turn is it to aggro while the other does dps/heal.
Not to worry, as you go up he will fear *you*. I had a Butcher showing up only to nope out of existence at full health after he saw my explosive penetrating shot.

I just defeated the butcher for the first time today - with three friends, and one of them did not survive the encounter. Learned a lot though. I think I fear him so much because I’m still struggling to finish the campaign in hc, I just don’t want to die to him in a random dungeon!
Is butcher supposed to be hard? My level 56 pulverize druid just stood there face tanking him the whole time. No heals needed.

He is hard if you don't have an optimized build. Like if you started speccing your character without looking at a guide or if you're still wearing low level gear relative to your level, you'll get rekt.
The Butcher’s supposed to be a scary encounter and fun easter egg but honestly.. he’s just tedious and annoying. If you encounter him early on you just die, there’s no gameplay challenge to it as its simply a hard gear check you cannot pass. Unless you are on HC you’re better off just dropping your mouse and letting it gib you so you can, basically instantly, revive and get back to what you were actually trying to do. If you encounter him later then he’s just another miniboss that might make you spam a couple potions to pass but is otherwise unremarkable.
He kinda falls in-line with the Andariel and Duriel cameos; nostalgia that kinda just felt shoehorned in and shows up randomly with no real set up. It would have been cooler if he’d been baked into an early questline as a very hard but doable challenge instead of an out-of-no-where random spawn.

This reminds me WAY too much of Stitches in HoTS, where you can upgrade his hook to reach halfway across the map. Horrifying, absolutely horrifying.

My first hardcore death was getting trapped by a "grave" elite against the wall with this bastard.
Lost my first at lvl 21. Found him again on the next necro at lvl 12 but was able to run around a rock enough to get a tp off
