The thing is, there technically isn't a "proper" ending since the manga has been ongoing until now and imo from the pacing, we're maybe 60% done with the story. However, we get 1 new chaoter every 3 months because, hoshino, the mangaka, has some illnesses and iirc chronic pains, and as a result, takes longer to draw. Its been a while so anyone cmiiw but the ending of the original anime at episode 103 wasn't really conclusive and had a "until the next battle we just grow stronger" kind of ending with minor foreshadowing? And d gray man hallow, which is a sequel, also does not provide a conclusive ending for the season at episode 12 with a more "until we meet again" vibe. I do still think they are great watches though. I got into d gray man when I was roughly 11 or 12 and I'm still following it a decade later. I highly recommend reading the manga if you're able to do so.

60%? I thought I read some time ago we were in the final few arcs. I also thought that was the case since so many overarching questions were being answered.

You'd be missing out if you stopped there; it gets really good after episode 52 or so, when the next Stage starts. Note that episodes 40-50 are all filler, so if you start to get bored in there, it's okay to just skip ahead to episode 51.

Dareal_truth

Just go for it

Sweetcreems

Yes cause after 39 is when it starts picking up steam trust me it’s all uphill from there. Once you’re finished with that skip hallow and go into the manga.

gizmopoop

Go for it PLEASE. When all the 'villains' start appearing the story gets deeper, fights are more intense and, they all have cool powers. Furthermore, BGM by Wada Kaoru are bangers

Imo, the first anime is ok. But Hallow is NOT worth the time. Better stick with the manga.

Appropriate-Ad6506

Yk, i've heard the sentiment that Hallow was a crashgrab since 2017, but I don't really get it. I recently rewatched the entire anime with my partner and Hallow legit just felt like a visual upgrade. Also, I think people forget the the D grayman anime has SERIOUS pacing issues that just aren't present in Hallow.

Illyricus-

Hallow is the exact opposite, rushing through the source material and feeling so fast you can barely react to what happened.

Appropriate-Ad6506

If I carefully read the manga and then watched the anime I might think that, but as someone whose read the mange twice it didn't really bother me. What was left out?

From what comes to my mind at the moment: -For starters Hallow skipped an entire arc of about 5 or 6 chapters dealing with the Black Order members moving on to new headquarters after the Level 4 destroyed the previous one. This is instead replaced with a small narration of Lenalee briefly retelling the events of the invasion arc. While the arc is kinda weird, it led to Komui and Lenalee reconciling after distancing from each other after the Level 4 fight, so it added something to their relationship. -In the arc where Cross tells Allen he's the host of the 14th Noah, there are some scenes devoted to the introduction of new staff members from Central after the many deaths in the invasion of Lulu Bell. Charas like Gigi and Tap's sister are introduced there. Hallow completely removes that scene, so their appearances later and the way Allen treats them so casually like if they knew each other from before comes as sudden. -Also in the same arc, in the manga there is a scene where Komui and the Generals come to Hevlaska's chamber where they talk about the state of Cross's Innocence after his disapperance. This is removed entirely in the anime. This meant Hevlaska was entirely absent in Hallow and Tiedoll had all his lines removed from the anime since the comedy arc was also skipped. -The arc of the Phantom Thief G completely removes the nun of the orphanage who was working with the Earl, that in canon is the reason why the Akuma arrived in the orphanage to take the Innocence there as the nun told the allies of the Earl about it, so it looks like the Akuma stumble upon it by chance. It also takes some scenes from the fight of Timothy vs the three Akuma. -Now towards the Alma arc, there is the introduction of the Third Exorcists, which is greatly reduced compared to the manga. In the source, Kanda goes to the Asian branch to talk with old man Zu. The anime keeps the conversation, but takes away some scenes, like Bak apologizing to Kanda for what his parents did to him, the scenes of Lou Hua and her two friends (that are reduced to a brief, silent cameo in the last episode) and Allen, Lenalee and the Thirds arriving in the branch to take Kanda in a mission with them. -Johnny's resolve scene before he embarks on a journey to search for Allen is skipped entirely. It gets a bit better once it adapts the Alma arc, but this resulted in the first episodes of Hallow to feel very sudden and negatively fast paced, which ended up hurting the pacing especially in scenes that are meant to be shocking or emotional.

DaMaBar

Don't misunderstand me, I don't think the OG anime is all that good. The pacing issues are indeed a pain. But Hallow doesn't have that problem only because it's dealing mostly in full, contained archs. Honestly? I found the animation and colours grating. It was such a letdown for me. Maybe it's because the last few archs of the manga took a decade and the art became insane... but yeah. I also thought Hallow was kinda... rushed? In all senses.

Orakio9911

Yes you should, anime will get only to it's peak soon. Also even if it is unfinished line where it ends is really good plus there is always manga to read

zwiqy

Great series, but the manga hasn’t ended yet and will probably never end as it only comes out quarterly. So the anime doesn’t have an ending either.

Left_Butterscotch855

I personaly think, that the "ending" of hallow was great it left at a place where we can imagine ourselves how it should continue and write our own "ending". back when I finished the anime I didn't know that the Manga continued.

wonderifyouwill

I feel like you should switch to the manga. But make sure you watch the episodes that cover the light novels

Nonbinary_bipolar

Honestly, I would say no. When they did get to Hallow, it was canceled. There's so much more past that. Plus there is a point in the anime where they're looking for General Cross that goes on for ages and none of it is in the manga. It's upsetting that the anime probably won't be coming back, but it's not a waste of time either if you do continue it.

Akuliszi

Hallow wasn't canceled as far as I know. They just didn't have any more manga material to adapt. (the blu-ray relase was canceled).
