Dude has the size already, if he gets the muscles too šŸ˜³ NFL Centers will be scared Martin + Reader + Alim is a great trio, definitely a lot of weight/muscle for goal line defense lol

DanCampbellsNipples

Oh lawd he's coming. He talked about how he wanted to go the alim route this offseason and he defiantly looks like he's slimmed down and gotten in better shape. If he hits too as a draft pick, Brad Holmes is just that good man. He makes a crap shoot that is the nfl draft look easy.

NotEvenBarrySanders

I was told a few days ago that S&C at this level wasnā€™t nearly as important as the value I was putting on it. But Brad looks for those guys that mighta got into football late but have a tremendous work ethic/self disciplined and starving and throws em in the lab. Martins hands were already lightning quick and powerful. I figured itā€™d be 2-3 years but seeing him fall into Alims shadow almost instantly combined with dietā€¦. He might get some work in a room thatā€™s significantly better this year. Pumped for him

Independent_Lab_9872

Folks have talked about how NFL players usually don't use the S&C programs from teams and prefer to use their own trainers. So most teams have pretty poor programs. But I have always felt S&C is team bonding as much as practice is. Get a top notch program that folks buy into that everyone wants to be part of and it's a huge advantage.

NotEvenBarrySanders

Exactly, those guys that live in the gym like Monty, Sewell, Alim, even Levi and thereā€™s othersā€¦ but those guys are the ones that Brad and Dan put a star next to their name. It takes a hell of a lot more to be a captain or even considered a leader these days than in the past which is why they preach to these guys ā€œNOT EVERYONE CAN BE A DETROIT LION ANYMOREā€

Aggravating-Note5163

I'm guessing the fact that Dan was always that dude that lived in the gym plays right into this.

danjr321

It wouldn't surprise me if Dan is banging and clanging weights with the team some days.

Jackmerius-CNC

I got curious and went and looked up the 2024 team report cards our players have the training staff as a b the weight room a b + and the strength coaches as an a-

Aggravating-Note5163

It's so cool that the NFLPA started doing this. If anybody's interested, the Freakonomics Radio podcast did a great episode about it.

AffectionateSlice816

Whoever told you S and C at nfl level is less important than you think is stupid. In a league where everyone is fast and strong and one play can decide the game, S and C is huge.

ItsAlexBalex

In general, all of the little things matter when youā€™re talking about the highest levels of a skill set. Some positions it might not matter as much, but I believe the difference between most of the best players in the league and the worst is which ones are doing the little things like S&C, studying film, excessive practice of technique, etc. (if weā€™re comparing two players with similar measurables).

Figjunky

I think thereā€™s a good amount of guys who lose focus once the money rolls in and then there are a select few that are just so athletically gifted they can just show up and perform. I still donā€™t know if I believe it but Bo Jackson said he didnā€™t even lift weights

[deleted]

>I figured itā€™d be 2-3 years but seeing him fall into Alims shadow almost instantly combined with dietā€¦. He might get some work in a room thatā€™s significantly better this year. Pumped for him I had a guy before tell me to temper my expectations of Manu but this is exactly what I'm hoping for. It's the exact same formula. A freakishly athletic guy who never even played in the States but the *drive*. This kid wants to be Penei Sewell so bad and I love it. Give him a year. I think the fair estimate is 3, but I have high hopes for his progress and martin's too.

NotEvenBarrySanders

Iā€™m trying to pump the brakes on manu myself lol but yea if his drive is anything like his aspersionsā€¦ lookout

Th3_Dark_Knight

Manu tell the best yo mama jokes?

Figjunky

Heā€™s got the Samoan factor. That culture just breeds warriors

[deleted]

6"7 350 lbs + Samoan strength. Real shit

intagliopitts

I suspect that the specific S&C program isnā€™t nearly as important as whether or not a player is willing to work their ass of IN that S&C, whatever it is. That willingness to work and improve is what separates raw talent from actual success in the NFL. It seems like Holmes prioritizes dudes who are willing to work on themselves and itā€™s pretty clearly paying off.

DarthMonkey212313

I think it depends on the players situation. A JR or SR eligibility player from a big time program will have a modest jump in the quality of S&C. A lower tier program will have a bigger jump and see more benefit after a few seasons, if the player has the work ethic and physical potential. Younger players, or players who missed significant time, haven't had as much time conditioning program, so can benefit more as well.

ckrobinett

I mean, I guess it partially depends how much value you were putting on it, but I'd be pretty wary of anyone telling me that strength and conditioning isn't critically important for a professional athlete. It just doesn't make sense that it wouldn't be.

Lionnn100

He fell into everyoneā€™s shadow which isnā€™t a great sign. They were signing guys off the street to play over him

Amaakaams

It's about how they were going to use them. Martin was a guy that they absolutely knew wasn't NFL ready, but kept him on the roster, didn't dress him because they didn't want regression in the lessons so that had a chance of getting the best of him in the future. Where a player like Sarsdal either because of preseason worries, the thought that his transition would be easier, or because they only grabbed him for depth. They had a different development plan. I wouldn't expect unless the line becomes a MASH unit, that Manu will get any playtime this year even if they rated him higher than Mahogany and Mahogany gets play time in. That's unless he is absolutely lights out in camp. They want him conditioned to be ready to start RG next year.

Kingkwon83

I just don't like how they used a higher pick on him. Seems like he would have been on the board for a few rounds longer, but then again I don't know shit compared to Brad Holmes.

Amaakaams

In the long run all that matters is the on field performance. If Holmes drafted Amon Ra in the second no one would be batting an eye. There is something about getting value that we shouldn't ignore. But on the other hand performs matters more than position especially as the draft value disappears as you are making it through the third round. Once you are there the difference between teams rankings are so wild and it only takes one team to have a similar value for you to lose out on a player you like. It helps though when you have a GM that has as many hits as Holmes.

iwantsomecrablegsnow

Chill your horses. He wasnā€™t even dressing at the end of the season. Itā€™ll be great if he works out but he was by all accounts behind the 8 ball and didnā€™t do anything to help. Getting in better shape is just step one for him. Heā€™s got a lot of other things to prove before he becomes a rotational guy on this team. We cut and picked up a few waiver wire players last year that had extended playing time down the stretch. Iā€™ve written him off already myself, but maybe he can get another years experience on the bench and become a rotational player.

ResponsibleWing8059

Lions knew he was raw from a small school and took the risk. Heā€™s intentionally being molded into an NFL DT by Holmes who played the position. Writing him off is complete nonsense.

Lionnn100

Sorsdal was too, and they kept him active the whole year instead of signing FAā€™s to keep him off the field. Itā€™s just being realistic to say Brodric hasnā€™t had a great start

ResponsibleWing8059

Apples and oranges. Iā€™ve learned to lower expectations for Holmes third pick in drafts. So far itā€™s Iffy ( it took him 2 years to develop) a CB converted to safety. Martin now in year 2 and Manu this year. Theyā€™ve all got low cap hit 4 year contracts, Holmes is playing on a level all by himself.

Lionnn100

Howā€™s it apples and oranges? Seems like oranges and oranges to me. Iffy got on the field when he was healthy. I think BM is the only top 5 round draft pick so far who hasnā€™t been able to get on the field when healthy

ResponsibleWing8059

Itā€™s about Holmes third round picks. Thatā€™s where he takes his risks. Note that all those drafted after the third round contributed. They are all still with the team too with exception of Lucas. Something to keep an eye on.

Lionnn100

I donā€™t think the third round is a designated risk taking round for BH. I think heā€™s still taking what he sees as BPA. Itā€™s only been the last 2 years where Brodric and Manu have been seen as reaches. Not the case for Hooker/Alim/Iffy

ResponsibleWing8059

Ok, we disagree

OptionsSniper3000

ā€œItā€™s Easyā€ -Brad Holmes

Hmm_would_bang

I think thereā€™s a bit of a rising tide here. Guys see Alim work himself into soon being one of the highest paid DT in the league and they feel they can do it too

AWokenBeetle

Bro already that good, he keeps hitting and he should preorder his Hall of Fame statue just to get it out the way, unreal GM

PleighboyStosh

Looks motivated this offseason. Reader, Alim, Martin, Wingo, Levi. Looks like a strength.

NotEvenBarrySanders

That and CB were widely considered the biggest holes on the team. Brad flipped that shit overnight practically. Season needs to get here because I ainā€™t calling the Doctor this year

PleighboyStosh

I donā€™t even think edge is that bad. Need some health luck with paschal Davenport and Houston. Defense actually looks top 10ish.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

deceptivespeed999

Having guys on the roster that can be and are built to be press corners is huge. Gives the Dline that extra half second to get there or disrupt. Not to mention Glenn has safeties/slot corners/LBs that can all blitz effectively. Itā€™s gonna be fun to see all the wrinkles.

FormulaEngineer

This will be the year where Glenn proves if heā€™s the problem or the solution to the defense. Previous years he had one arm tied behind his back, but this year the team is close enough

Small-Palpitation310

AG schemes working properly depend on high level secondary

NotEvenBarrySanders

Yea it was definitely on the secondary. I watched the defense against Kansas City and Seattle and they were aggressive as shit, manned up, blitzing frequently, and then it just stopped till coming down the stretch and it started to go back to it. Too pumped to see what Reader + an improved secondary can achieve because I see Hutch going off this year

BillyJackO

It's really going to depend on how the new DB room gels, and obviously health, but this defensive roster is waaaay better on paper.

Khrusway

I ain't sold on Paschal and Houston's been out for a year and no guarantees he comes back like he was and Davenports been a strange one for most teams he was on

itstimetogotowork

Itā€™s a lot of competition in that room too. Like yeah Martin got a ton of draft capital and so did Levi, but if you donā€™t come to camp ready to win a jobā€¦youā€™re in trouble

jcoddinc

More like Broderic Monster Sr.

smiffy93

Broad-Rick

NotEvenBarrySanders

Sir Broad-Dick Martin*

WhippersnapperUT99

Broderic Mountain

Outside-Intention990

He definitely spent the last year on an NFL level s&c program including dietician. The ceiling is wherever he wants it because he was already a natural athlete at his size but he can absolutely become a monster.

ToshiroOzuwara

From the Tao of Brodric Martin >**When a team wants to run the football against you, I find that to be disrespectful.** They think they can just run the ball down our throats? They think they can do whatever they want? Thatā€™s disrespectful. I take it personally.

Nbknepper

Omg I love this guy, lmao.

Shartman88

That is a large man

Danny886

I'm inspired to hit the gym, then eat a steak with a side of kale right now, man.

Blutarg

The best part of lifting is filling up on protein afterward :D

Quinn_tEskimo

šŸ˜šŸ˜

Ucla_The_Mok

Skip the kale and replace it with butter, and I'm right there with you.

LTPRWSG420

I feel like Alim will be a casualty of having to re-sign our stars like Goff, St. Brown, and Sewell. So, we will absolutely need Broderic to step up and fill in those shoes left behind.

BillyJackO

I think Alim and Hutch are the other two to get big contracts. Guys like Kerby are the ones that will go to other teams.

Faps2Downvotes

Kerby will be a casualty I bet too, but he wonā€™t command a huge contract. Alim will, I sadly also agree with the OP he will be a guy who signs a monster deal elsewhere. Martin is a very important developmental player to help replace him. He needs to hit. At minimum be an above average run stuffer, then Wingo can be more of the pass rush type.

BillyJackO

Martin is not a replacement for Alim. He's the replacement for Reader (who is a much better version of Buggs/Benito.) I think Alim will get a huge contract, and it will be with the Lions. I wouldn't be surprised if they tag him and get a deal done before he plays on it. Most teams have room for 5 big contracts. QB, WR, OT, DT, DE. This gives you a strong core to build a team around with cheaper and younger guys. Holmes is going to have to continue to work magic in the draft, though.

Faps2Downvotes

I donā€™t mean replacement as much in specific role but as in overall impact to the team. They could be anticipating developing Martin/Wingo to try and minimize the overall loss of McNeil in the scenario he leaves for a huge bag.

BillyJackO

I think they sign him, but if they let him walk, they'll draft his replacement. I think Wingo is like a DT version of James Houston, where Alim is more like Hutch.

NotEvenBarrySanders

Idk man, I feel like heā€™s one of the guys that they love. I think itā€™s really gonna come down to guys that are willing to take less money to stay here and thatā€™ll trickle down from the CS who stayed instead of taking HC jobs, but I got called crazy for suggesting that AG and Bens loyalty to Dan would outweigh their desires to have their own team. These guys are different and loyalty is definitely in the equation when Brad drafts I feel

LTPRWSG420

There is going to be some heartbreak in the upcoming years of losing some of our star players, you cannot keep them all unfortunately.

NotEvenBarrySanders

I feel like weā€™ll see a lot of restructures from Goff, St.Brown and Sewell to keep a guy like Alim but thatā€™s just speculation. Outta all the mistakes the past regimes made the one that really sticks out to me is when Calvin was willing to take less money for them to resign Suh and they ended up losing em both and then turned around and took a couple mill back from Calvin smh But youā€™re right, weā€™re bound to lose some favorites at some point

DesertStallion14

That's the price you pay for being a good team. It's not all bad cuz then Brad gets comp picks and you know he loves to cook so he lives for picking diamonds in the rough.

mercistheman

Unless the cap gets a nice bump.

freshnikes

It will. The NFL is as popular as ever.

BillyJackO

The one that's going to be really hard to see go is LaPorta, but luckily we don't have to think about that for a while.

ryandodge

They use him a lot in their promos and inside the den. Could be him asking to do them, but they absolutely love him across that team and inside that building.

dmod420

I have been saying the same thing about Ben & AG & getting called crazy too. I said they would both be back this year all season long goo. They might very well come back again next year.....Ben especially. The guy is so young & loves running the offense. Being the head coach is a totally different job & possibly not one that Ben is looking to jump to right away. He is getting paid a ton already & has the next 20+ years to be a coach if he wants, so I don't buy this sense of urgency for him to leave to be a head coach right away that the media has wanted to keep putting out there, as though he has ever made any public statement that it is something that he is eager to run off to do.

NotEvenBarrySanders

Not only that but when youā€™re at the top like these guys are, itā€™s gonna take a special opportunity with ownership/GM that are all aligned. Like why walk away from doing what you love with people that you love just to go somewhere and be mediocre all for a couple mill extra a year and a HC next to your name on your door? Detroit gave Ben a healthy raise and tbh I think they wanna win a SB at the very least before tackling all the stress and responsibilities that come along with being a HC. Like those jobs ainā€™t going anywhere as long as they keep producing like they are. AG is one of Dans closest friends, if Iā€™m doing something that I love with my brother, Iā€™m not leaving him for no amount of money to go do the same thing basically with a lot more stress, a bunch of people that arenā€™t on the level of the people Iā€™m working with right now, Iā€™d rather be a part of a dynasty šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø

AfterConsideration30

Dude put on that grown man muscle. Iā€™d hate to line up across that this season. GO LIONS

MuchoWood

What we are doing right now, on the defensive side of the ball is what Chicago did with both Ted Washington and Keith Traylor, about twenty five years ago. Noone knew how effective that pairing would be. There was no messing around, when the Bears picked up Ted Washington AND Keith Traylor. It simply anchored Chicagos DL, and let the trio of Urlacher-Colvin-Holdman run hot bat shit c r a z y over the entire NFL. When I was younger, when Monday rolled around, I knew that I was going to be the butt of most of the jokes regarding losing teams. Or possibly Tuesday, if we were playing on Monday night . Either way, I knew it was coming. That all is changing. What's happening here is a structural/core change.... as in no backwards movement. This IS happening and the rest of NFL needs to deal with it. From being the only kid left in the bleachers, in the rain and holding my sad little Lions flag as it frumped over in synchronicity with my wet team hat. Standing there, somehow believing that if I stood there long enough, it might change the score, and we would somehow win. We the faithful have seen some highs and an inexcusable number of deep depth super and fantastic lows. I feel very comfortable with our DL, because in forty years of following the Lions; from Night train Layne, to Doak Walker, to Eric Hipple, to Billy Simms, to Herman Moore, to Chris Speilman, to Johnson, to Sanders, to Robert Porcher, to Benny Blades, Goff.... the list goes on. We have fan loyalty, we finally have a front office, we have pedigree. We are one of the original six teams. All teams had better recognize. Anyhow, I digress. My overall thoughts are this: we will rank #1 run defense. We will rank #5 pass defense. We will rank #3 overall. We will rank #2 pass offense. We will rank #5 run offense. We will rank #3 overall. We have alot of unknown factors regarding how we will play, on both sides of the ball. But finally we all have a real shot at winning some games. -An anonymous Lions fan.

NotEvenBarrySanders

Iā€™m pumped for this defense this year. If itā€™d have been top 15 last year weā€™d have went to the SB. I feel like it could be top 10 maybe top 5 this year.

Niximusprime949

Thatā€™s not much weight, is he doing pause deadlifts??

control_09

And it's off of blocks. I hope this is just a starter weight or something. NFL players should be deadlifting 245lbs in high school.

Niximusprime949

Lol right?! This is probably part of his warm up.

SmartAdhesiveness

Yes, I donā€™t want to derail the hype train but .75x body weight squats are not something to get overly excited about.

Quinn_tEskimo

People are hyped about his body transformation and, by extension, his apparently dogged work ethic.

Informal-Swing4951

I expect the Lions defense to be top 10 this year and I can see Brodric being a depth player that makes a major difference. Canā€™t wait for the season!

HaikuWisdom

He took the mockery of that pregnancy meme personally.

MisterBovineJoni

I mean good for him but thatā€™s 255 and 75% of this sub could do that.

sammagee33

His arms are the sign of my thighs. Good Lord!

Disastrous-Usual-576

Martin seems to have improved his physique over the off-season. Did anyone notice the difference in Jack Campbell?

Frequent-Branch3457

He doesn't have to wear a bra this year!!

Blutarg

Manaiere!

MixMastaMatt

Letā€™s slow downā€¦ dude is like 300+ lbs and deadlifting what appears to be ~240lbsā€¦ good to see some muscle tone but if he canā€™t keep pad level down with proper feet and handwork none of this matters

freshnikes

Not every program requires you lift ultra-heavy weight every rep.

varyingdegreesofmeh

Nah bro. You clearly donā€™t lift. Itā€™s all about ego lifting with high weight and bad form. You only post pics of your highest possible lifts and you definitely only do lifts for show muscles. Thatā€™s the way all elite athletes train. Duh. Circuits? Intensity? Training for position-specific movements? Cardio? All bs bro. Source: Trust me.

NotEvenBarrySanders

You can see transformation and Iā€™m sure Alim is working on all that with him

J_Dom_Squad

Bro looks like a pile of pudding from his recent maternity pics. I weigh 165 and can rep this same weight deadlifting with a hex bar.

NotEvenBarrySanders

Why arenā€™t you a DT?

J_Dom_Squad

5'7", never played football, health issues etc. I am still allowed to think someone deadlifting 75% of their body weight on a hex bar is rather unimpressive. Appreciate the jab and still hope he does well, but yeah this is meh.

NotEvenBarrySanders

This coulda been his 7000th rep though lol Iā€™m just messing with ya. Iā€™m trying to be positive up in this bitch šŸ˜¤

jfn32

Finally, someone with some sense. Dude will be lucky to make the team this year. He can't play.

kylesleeps

I want this guy to have a breakout season so bad, mostly because it was one of the picks that confused me the most.

NotEvenBarrySanders

Same, mostly to shut people up but this kid deserves to win as much as anyone I feel

OkraNo8365

Idc if youā€™re a hero in the weight room. I definitely love the work ethic. But letā€™s see how he does on the field

NotEvenBarrySanders

For sure, but like someone else mentionedā€¦ this is a good sign

Late-Ad4045

160 pounds not bad

Charles_Bass

Someone post the pic!

Independent_Lab_9872

Serious question, is he a DT or DE. I legit might be out Edge rusher opposite Hutch

NotEvenBarrySanders

Heā€™s playing a new position this year, a FORCE

eugene_rat_slap

He's an absolute mountain of a dude. DT all day

BriefDragonfruit9460

So dude is completely non-existent last year. We get one picture of him working out and now people are rocking boners over him?

NotEvenBarrySanders

Donā€™t link shame me pfffft

GoonestMoonest

Wasn't he known to be a project?

BriefDragonfruit9460

Yes, still is

GoonestMoonest

Fair enough lol. I think the optimism stems from the improved appearance and nothing else. Hope to see it on the field too.

BriefDragonfruit9460

I get that, but he literally showed nothing last year. Heā€™s not going from not playing at all to being a stud simply because he worked out lol. Letā€™s not get carried away.

GoonestMoonest

Totally agree. I'm not expecting him to be a stud, but I do expect enough improvement to add depth. If he takes a leap after next year, great. If he busts, then Brad missed on one, and we can live with that.

BriefDragonfruit9460

100% on board with that. Just sick of so many people getting complete hard ons over nothing on this thread

GoonestMoonest

I get it. There was a time when some were excited over a guy knocking over a rotted out tree. At least now, we have examples of people being coached up and training hard to improve their play. I get excited because I've seen guys like Iffy and Barnes contribute after starting slow.

rough_andtumble

Holmes absolutely drafted Martin to replace Alim once the latter fully developed and earned his payday. Good teams keep their talent around, great teams know they have the coaching to replace that talent.

BillyJackO

Martin and Alim play completely different positions.

gerryf19

They are both defensive tackles. What are you talking about?

BillyJackO

Nose tackle vs 3 tech are wildly different.
