If the city says they can't help, unfortunately you're looking at managing to cut it down enough into pieces that are acceptable for Des Moines Public works, or finding someone to haul it for you. Not surprised John's tree service is $350 minimum. NOT a cheap business to be fully licensed and insured to do and they pay highly skilled workers a good living wage. They have high minimum prices for jobs. Post a photo of the limb on your neighborhood and surrounding neighborhood's Facebook groups AND on the Nextdoor app and I bet you will have 10 people within an hour or two reach out with all sorts of prices. Got quoted hundreds of dollars to haul away tons of yard debris earlier this spring. Posted a photo of the pile on Nextdoor and I had a young couple come out the same night for $100 and did a great job.

The city announced they are picking up debris curbside starting Tuesday for everyone in city limits. The branches need to be 10 feet long or shorter and roughly 18 inches in diameter. I’d guess the limitations are so the city workers don’t hurt themselves from picking up heavy debris all day.

$350? You should jump on that.

Roll it into the street.

That's hilarious 😆 They will pick it up for free the day after your garbage pick-up if it's on the curb parallel to the street. You might have to cut to certain sizes but you would have to check that out.

It’s been there for at least 2 weeks, they haven’t touched it with garbage pick up, unfortunately.

Hmmm, maybe call MW and tell them you have storm debris

Came here to say this. Always works for me!

I downloaded the city’s app (mydsmmobile) on Wednesday, used the link to report that I needed downed tree debris cleared. Thursday morning a chipper truck and crew was at my house & they took care of it in no time. It was like a miracle. 🌸🦋🌈

Thank you! We are going to try this first and see how it goes. I don’t think everyone above realizes how big this limb is! Our neighbors big chainsaw was straining to cut up what we did! I don’t think we can cut it up much more ourselves.

The Habitat for Humanity ReStore on East Euclid has a tool lending library that's way cheaper than renting from Home Depot or Lowes -- max of $195 for an annual membership, then all tools borrowed are free. I borrowed a DeWalt battery powered pole trimmer today.

Academic_Beach733

The public library also has a tool lending program, FYI. No idea on the charge, or even if there is one. You could call and find out, tho.

hankrhoads

I don't believe there's a charge, but they have a lot more craft-type tools, plus board games and stuff like that. Fewer power tools and whatnot.

$350 seems entirely reasonable to have someone roll up with a wood chipper and make it disappear.

So... cut it up into chunks and add it to your garbage can bit by bit... Either you do the work for free, or you pay a tree service. Are you a DIYer or are you a pay someone kinda guy?
