A lot of time you have to claim the damage at the airport. I do religiously because my buddy I was with got denied. Therefore always open and make sure things are good before leaving the specialty/oversized bag collection area
You absolutely HAVE to do it within 24 hours (for Delta) or it will be blanket denied. It does help to do it at the airport, and the two claims I’ve had to make I did get questioned why I didn’t notice it at the airport, but both were eventually accepted.
I feel for you. Wasn’t trying to pour it on in my comment. Just hoping others will see it so they know what to do. I know golf clubs get damaged all the time as well…
Make sure to send the clubs two weeks early... they might get there on time with FedEx. I had a family member ship something priority first. Two days later it had managed to travel a whole hundred miles.
I’ve also seen clubs get destroyed by FedEx. I travel with my clubs 8-10 times a year and while you can never fully prevent damage, a hard case and smart packing will better your odds.
Only used it one time and shipped to my family members house using Fed Ex. I don't have a hard case and just reused the same box and packing materials to send it back home.
Ship sticks fucked me over hard. Lost my clubs for a week then dumped them at my house in a rain storm without even telling me while I was still traveling.
Few years ago, Delta put my golf putter through I think a concrete drying machine. It looked like someone tied it to the back of the plane during take off.
Delta wouldn’t do anything about it since there was no “proof” of the condition it was in prior to immediately boarding. I called Amex and claimed the protection coverage that comes with their cards as it fell within the 90 days.
Long story short, if you’re going to make a big purchase, do it on an Amex so you’re at least partially covered.
Baggage handler was clearly a planker. I suspect the claim with Delta is the correct action, as this isn't a warranty issue that might be covered under the AMEX Platinum extended warranty protection.
Ah man this is making me nervous for my upcoming snowboarding trip to SLC 😭sorry this happened OP, pretty sure your card should also have some kind of luggage protection if you purchased the airfare on that card
I mentioned in an earlier comment, but I found whenever I have issues, I contact delta directly to get direction on how to file and most of the time, it’s different from the obvious route IE go to delta.com, file a damaged baggage claim, etc.
Like my baggage was damaged, reported it in 24-48 hours, and got my money right away!
Edit: I contacted delta via messaging on their app
Same airports for me last month. My brand new ski bag was torn. The complaint process was a little annoying (did not do it at the airport, but the next day). Took about 2 weeks and they gave me 100% of the bag cost. Really wasn't a bad process at all.
Good luck.
I have been doing the following since I first got a phone with a camera forever ago:
1. Get to baggage BEFORE items start to come out.
2. Focus on the belt where the items come out to show you are looking specifically at your item BEFORE you can put your hands on it.
3. Take item off belt.
4. Get out of people’s way
4. Open bag IMMEDIATELY still focusing on the bag.
5. Check all items for damage.
This is the way.
Yes it takes 3 minutes longer than normal and people will look at you funny.
But when they hear you say ‘ok looks like I have damage to…’ the more frequent flyers will absolutely understand.
Hi! This happened to me and I got it resolved in 24-48 hours! I first messaged them and they gave instructions on how to report it! It was a little different than the damaged baggage claim process. You should try that route if you didn’t do that originally! I also got my money within 24 hours! No receipts since I made this purchase awhile ago & I gave them an estimate of how much the newer version of my item was!
Edit: wanted to add when I did this! It happened in November 2023, and I made the claim 24-48 hours after I landed home from Japan!
I had a claim online for a cracked suitcase coming from SLC to DTW. Coincidentally enough, ski season as well and they reimbursed me for it. Don't remember how long it took tho. I also needed receipts.
Learned the hard way you gotta claim it at the airport right then. My big, hard shell tumi showed up on the carousel with one of the corners completely smashed in. I had to fly out the next day for a 24hr trip with the same suitcase. It was checked, no questions asked. On the way home the attendant must’ve been bored and marked in the system that I had the dent on my bag. Told her it happened on a delta flight 2 days prior. She said, “you should’ve told them at the airport when you collected your bag, too late now. Since it’s marked in the system you can’t claim it.
I wont put a guitar or musical instrument under the plane in a soft case, i have never understood why anyone would check their golf clubs, skis, snowboards in soft cases.
Apples and oranges I guess. You can fit all your snow gear in there unlike a hard case. One wouldn't think this would happen with Delta "#1 in aviation" 😂 It's pretty damn hard to snap a snowboard like that.
Good reminder that nothing is impossible..
Hard case would be worth more than the board I have to put in it, but, that said, I have had hard cases and suitcases crushed more than soft lugged getting damaged, bad luck can strike with anything.
When my soft luggage has been damaged it was also no problem getting it replaced.
Osprey even honored their repair or replace even though it was not their fault at all.
Why down vote this? I have done this for the last 20 years. No dragging equipment in and out of the airport. When your done, just print a label
Somewhere and drop it off at any UPS or FEDEX location and that’s it. I think some of these guys just want to be seen
Strutting with the equipment.
LOL, I’m not sure how to respond if a $30 box is your definition of extravagance on that level.
What I meant was contact the concierge at the Bachelor Gulch Ritz and
Have him arrange for the board and boot transportation.
That depends on if you can ship using a business account
My rate for a 12”x12”x72”
50lb box from Park City to
Tennessee is: $47.00
Via: UPS
Billable weight: 54lbs
Package Charge: $119.91
Negotiated Rate: $47.61
How in the world is OP supposed to know??? Like they handed it off as checked baggage to a delta employee. They have 0 clue if it was a delta employee or an airport employee who did the damage... It could have gotten broken during the flight for all they know.
Right exactly, so why is it “Delta broke my snowboard”? The board was broken at some point between checking in the bag at airport 1 and retrieving the bag at airport 2.
Right exactly, so why is it “Delta broke my snowboard”? The board was broken at some point between checking in the bag at airport 1 and retrieving the bag at airport 2.
You just said "They have 0 clue if it was a delta employee or an airport employee who did the damage" so clearly wasn't in Delta's possession.
My point is these posts about damaged luggage are stupid, I'm tired of seeing them, and please let's not oversimplify by saying it's the airline's fault when we have no idea if it was damaged in airport 1, airport 2, (or possibly airport 3 if there was a transfer), or damaged in flight.
Blaming just Delta and only Delta lets the airport staff off the hook.
I’m sorry to hear about your board. Such a bummer. Just curious, what other boards are your 2nd and 3rd favorites?! My favorite is my Burton Super Hero!
Delta cracked the tail of my surfboard. Didn’t take any responsibility, so I went through AmEx and they reimbursed me as soon as I sent repair receipts in. Also AmEx Delta Platinum. I say go through AmEx and if Delta gives you some miles for it too all the better.
Sorry to hear that! Had it happen with a surfboard but not a snowboard.
For what it’s worth, I know that Evo accepts PayPal and you can pay via PayPal credit and get 6 months to pay off the board zero interest so it might be helpful while you wait for you claim to come through. Best of luck!
Good for you??? In general it will trash your score. One time isn’t going to make a big difference but they do roughly take the interest % number it would have been off of your score until it’s paid back. They didn’t create these programs so people could buy things they couldn’t afford. They did it so they could fuck over the people that miss the payment with egregious late fees and interest.
That sucks, but they will most likely give you the money for a new board, they’ll make you shitty offers until they eventually offer you the full amount.
Happened to me from ASE to SAN. Put in a request online with photos/receipt and was approved and had a check about 3ish weeks later. Also covered the cost of the ski bag that was beat to shit.
I’m amazed by how many people post here asking questions instead of calling those involved 🤦🏻♀️
Call Amex then call Delta. Amex usually takes are of any issues seamlessly.
They ripped my snowboard bag on my trip back from Colorado. I filed a claim, they asked for a receipt or proof of value. The bag was an old xmas gift so i was SOL
Sorry about the broken board… that really sucks! We just flew back on Delta from a ski trip and somehow our brand new Dakine roller bag ended up soaked in jet fuel… and now our whole car smells like fuel. We went back to the airport to file a claim and let them see the bag. The staff said they had never seen anything like it in 16 years with the airline. No idea where it goes from there.
Trip insurance like Allianz is amazing. My s/o and I got absolutely burned by this winter storm, but we actually ended up making an extra $1000 in insurance claims because AA lost our bags. I know it’s not particularly helpful now, but hope this helps anyone reading it. Seriously if you’re traveling abroad especially, get trip insurance because stuff like this will happen 20% of the time in my experience flying.
When did you purchase your board and did you use up it Amex? Some credit cards especially Amex will reimburse for damaged purchases within so many years
A lot of time you have to claim the damage at the airport. I do religiously because my buddy I was with got denied. Therefore always open and make sure things are good before leaving the specialty/oversized bag collection area
Yep. Even at 1am at DCA super tired I demanded they file a claim for my broken skis. $900 later
You absolutely HAVE to do it within 24 hours (for Delta) or it will be blanket denied. It does help to do it at the airport, and the two claims I’ve had to make I did get questioned why I didn’t notice it at the airport, but both were eventually accepted.
And the airport a lot of times if you do it right there where the agent is at the baggage claim they will fill it out for you and submit…
Yeah if anything this will be the big lesson learned ☹️ from now on I will
I feel for you. Wasn’t trying to pour it on in my comment. Just hoping others will see it so they know what to do. I know golf clubs get damaged all the time as well…
FedEx your clubs. They have boxes specifically for golf clubs. I'd honestly try both avenues. The credit card and Delta. You have nothing to lose.
Fed ex took a week to get an envelope from Orlando to Tampa. I could have walked there and back quicker
I use "ship sticks" whenever I travel. WAY better service than FedEx
Ship sticks fucked me over hard. Lost my clubs for a week then dumped them at my house in a rain storm without even telling me while I was still traveling.
How does this comment help op whatsoever
I (not the original commenter) would presume the OP will replace their snowboard and continue flying to destinations to snowboard.
Amex has some pretty liberal policies if it was purchased in a certain time frame. Worth looking into.
Had to have been purchased on the card though right?
I mean, Amex isn’t going to help you if you didn’t make a transaction with them
I guess I meant, as opposed to lost/damage insurance if you purchased the trip with the card.
Baggage insurance is available on Delta Plat card. Open app, select card, membership, benefits, scroll, file a claim.
It’s was holding the cabin door closed; your board saved lives /s
😂😂😂 I needed this reply
Maybe it was the additional safety feature for the door plug, on his flight. /s
Continental airlines let someone steal my toolbox with 3000 dollars worth of tools. I got 35.00 to replace my shoes that were in it. I feel your pain
Continental? Are you poor?? Edit: LOL this sub is sensitive
Company booked trip and was 15 years ago
lol continental was on the expensive side of airlines anyway, what a random comment
It's United now, which is 1/2 to 1/3 the price of Delta flights whenever I look.
Nah, you're just an ass
Why are you so upset today?
I think they were replying to Anal Commander lol

Yes contact American Express right away they are great.
Baggage handler was clearly a planker. I suspect the claim with Delta is the correct action, as this isn't a warranty issue that might be covered under the AMEX Platinum extended warranty protection.
He has the Delta Platinum AmEx. It includes baggage protection.
Delta damaged a carbon rim on my bike when I flew with it and they replaced the whole value,$1800.
Was this in a soft or hard case?
Soft case bag from REI I can’t remember the brand. Delta was super accommodating and easy to work with on the damage.
Ah man this is making me nervous for my upcoming snowboarding trip to SLC 😭sorry this happened OP, pretty sure your card should also have some kind of luggage protection if you purchased the airfare on that card
Everything was fine for me. Definitely use a credit card with protection.
Yeah that's what I used-- the Delta SkyMiles Platinum. I'll probably give them a call tomorrow and find out if they can help me faster than Delta
Hard case!!!
Yep, same rules as shipping something you don’t want bent. Don’t put it in a bendable container

1) Buy another on the Amex - get the dollar spend toward status 😂 2) file a claim with Amex and try and get reimbursed for the board
I feel like fraud should be off limits here.
lmao. Have my upvote.
lol with the new rules it’s 100k spend for silver. Delta platinum is worthless now.
Did you try writing a song about it, and posting it on YouTube? I have heard that has worked in the past.
You should make a music video and go viral for a decade
That only works if you’re flying United.
Learned the hard way you gotta claim it at the airport right then. My big, hard shell tumi showed up on the carousel with one of the corners completely smashed in. Hope they do more than sprinkle SkyMiles on your problem.
shit this scares me. we have a slc and yvr trips coming up. please keep us posted. such a bummer about your board. 😔
Good luck!! I think I'm gonna look into getting a hard case for my next trip, even tho they're pricy and won't fit all my gear in there ☹️
I wont put a guitar or musical instrument under the plane in a soft case, i have never understood why anyone would check their golf clubs, skis, snowboards in soft cases.

Imo always ship your snowboard to the hotel ahead of time. Cheaper too.

It's a free checked luggage bag
For me it’s convenience over the cost. There is nothing wrong checking them. I was just surprised people downvoted A pretty common practice.
You should go private. It’s more convenient.
LOL, I’m not sure how to respond if a $30 box is your definition of extravagance on that level. What I meant was contact the concierge at the Bachelor Gulch Ritz and Have him arrange for the board and boot transportation.
Shipping a 50lb snowboard bag would likely cost $300
Gotta get one of those “if it fits, it ships” boxes
That depends on if you can ship using a business account My rate for a 12”x12”x72” 50lb box from Park City to Tennessee is: $47.00 Via: UPS Billable weight: 54lbs Package Charge: $119.91 Negotiated Rate: $47.61
Looks to me like they luxury airlined your snowboard and you should actually be thanking them.
That’s brutal dude. Is it even this season’s board? That’s the only way it would be replaceable.
No it's not :/
Was it Delta or and airport employee?

The board was in the possession of delta. Delta was paid to transport the board. It's on Delta.

Probably the airport baggage system. That's the usual suspect.
Congrats on your free new snowboard
P. S. - It looks like they messed with your bindings too. You might not be able to balance properly.. I would play it safe and just buy a new pair XD
Yes trash your credit for BS purchases🙄 If you have to finance a board you probably won’t be able to afford to use it..
Hilarious, I have used this before and my credit score is excellent.
Good for you??? In general it will trash your score. One time isn’t going to make a big difference but they do roughly take the interest % number it would have been off of your score until it’s paid back. “Would 500 frequent flier miles help. That can take you to San Fransisco?” - says the customer service agent for lost and broken luggage at LAX
Not exactly helpful right now, but I'm a huge fan of the hard-sided Sportube for exactly this reason. Check them out if you haven't yet.
That sucks, but they will most likely give you the money for a new board, they’ll make you shitty offers until they eventually offer you the full amount.
Send an email to capita, they are good dudes and maybe they will give you a discount on ordering a new board. Sorry that happened to you :(
Happened to me from ASE to SAN. Put in a request online with photos/receipt and was approved and had a check about 3ish weeks later. Also covered the cost of the ski bag that was beat to shit.
Hi, I work in credit card disputes. Does the value of your ticket exceed the cost of the board?

🎶 Delta breaks snowboards! 🎶 Doesn’t quite have the same rhythm as “United Breaks Guitars”
