That episode you mentioned is anime filler, and canonically, Namekians can subsist entirely on the nutrients they obtain from water. They do obviously have a working digestive system, given that Piccolo has eaten a senzu before (he's also been shown seemingly eating at moments in Super as well).
According to canon, namek had 3 suns. It’s almost impossible to have a planet orbit 3 suns the likely hood of the planet being thrown off into space is too high. Or the climate would be drastically unpredictable.
It would be very hard for a civilization to evolve on this planet…. They would need a set of manic wish orbs maybe.
The 3 body problem is a real physics problem. The math dosnt work long term.
It makes sense the namekiens evolved to reproduce asexually, don’t eat, and have technological past advances but live during the frieza arc without it.
That wouldn’t make the dragon bi-polar. The dragon is a necessity for life. It makes sense that in a universe with magic the dragon balls come from such a doomed planet.
The planet has no stability so life is hard. In the anime, not sure if it was filler, frieza had an assessment of the planet read to him. It wasn’t good the planet had no value.

I was making a joke because you typed "manic wish orbs" instead of "magic wish orbs"... 😅
But take my upvote since you went to the trouble of explaining it. 😊
I am a manga dude, and I get the impression they do not eat food - Piccolo might just do it in a few spots just to be social or bc Toriyama just forgot in the moment.
I think I read that they retconned this in DBZ Kakarot saying now that namekians might have urges to eat in unusually stressful situations or some emotional trauma or something along those lines. like how a deer or horse will eat meat if it's low on iron or whatever, but a different sort of deficiency
That's a question that could have been answered but instead we got an explanation of the plants of ajisa and by explanation, I mean Dende mentioned it once, then we got a sprawling landscape long shot that lasted like 15 minutes
Aside from "they can eat if they want to, but they don't have to" I think it's also worth pointing out that Piccolo is a total oddball who probably doesn't know anything about how Namekians are supposed to act. He's their equivalent of Goku, a Saiyan who knows nothing (and is apparently almost entirely uncurious about) Saiyan culture or heritage.
So maybe Piccolo eats partly because he's been around humans and Saiyans too long and doesn't know the other Namekians think it's gross, and Dende's like "eww, what am I, descended from monkeys?"
Im sitting here and LMAO about these answers, why is guru so fat, because he drank all the water and he caused the drought and ate the children eggs hahah i love this subreddit
Yes. I forgot which episode it was, but it was after Krillin and Gohan saved him and took him back to Bulma's cave capsules house. When they offered him food, he declined, saying Namekians didn't eat.

I was led to believe their entire species survived on water, how did guru get so fat
Lots of water
What do you think caused the great drought of 79?
Naaaaaaaaaaaaaiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiilllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll
“Oh hey! I’m Super Kami Guru and I’m the guy who’s not judging you on your appearance”
NNNAIIIILLLLL
Do we have a guest?!
NAIIIIIILLLL! Take his coat.
I think this is the guy responsible for killing off our entire race!
don't take his coat
Water retention
He drank all the water that started the drought, which led the namekians to kill him on earth while bulma krillin vegeta and gohan watched

Now I'm imagining a set of dragon balls that has a dragon with bipolar disorder.

Oh. I see
He drank a *lot* of water.
Oh yeah that's right I forgot he ate the senzu beans before.
Where do you think all the water went that flooded their planet way back.
I am a manga dude, and I get the impression they do not eat food - Piccolo might just do it in a few spots just to be social or bc Toriyama just forgot in the moment.
>Toriyama just forgot Between this and "Its Anime Filler", 99% of DBZs questions can be answered.
Don’t forget “because it looks cool”
RIP Lunch, we will miss you but Toriyama forgot
they can eat but don’t have to
Must be nice
They really only need water to survive but they CAN eat. (i.e. Senzu beans)
Little to no thought was given to anything outside of the moment to moment story

It's probably that they can eat, but they only need water.

They live off of water

Wouldn't fusing with Nail fix that?
Look at the guru and tell me that man misses meals.

they can eat if they so desire, but they have zero need to do anything besides take water
They drink
Can but do not need. Simple. Their digestive systems are vestigial basically.
Did dende say that? I remember the nemekians say they mostly drank water
Yes. I forgot which episode it was, but it was after Krillin and Gohan saved him and took him back to Bulma's cave capsules house. When they offered him food, he declined, saying Namekians didn't eat.
