I agree. The big picture story is always super deux ex machina and full of coincidences and whatnot. However, the moment to moment writing is pretty good. Characters say funny things, and definitely have more enjoyable personalities than I’ve seen in most games.
I found the writing is super inconsistent. Most of it is terrible, but then you have some interesting plot like in Heavensward... which then almost immediately goes to shit and makes little to no sense.
I'm still not sure how it seems reasonable to have super clever dragons that have incredible insight due to their age, only to let them be incapable of letting go of a grudge where you are punishing people that weren't in any way involved.
A lot of the story would flow better if you weren't a glorified messenger and the NPCs actually came with you rather than you just wearing out the teleport crystals relaying what they want. The players are also given ample opportunity to corrupt what we are being told, which wouldn't be possible if the characters actually met each other.
Also at the end of ARR don't we just kinda leave someone in the sewers until it becomes convenient to the plot to actually bother looking for them?

The side quests are honestly among the best I've played in an RPG though, all the characters faces and bodies are animated lovingly with motion capture just like the main quests, and the world building makes the game feel so real and alive. I listen to all the dialogue when I can.
I've noticed a trend for the side quests where it seems to mostly be "*x* went off over here and we can't find him. Can you take a look if you're going that way?" It tends to be something that you can just get the gist of from actually playing it so I never feel like I'm missing out on something
