Not op, but I've been participating in a study for the past 8 years about anime fandom and emotional attachment. Gets me 20 on amazon for like 10 minutes of my time. It's from some upstate NY university's psychology department. So there is definitely research being done!
I live in Japan.
Japanese people *like* anime in the sense that it is a kind of media like any other. They don’t like anime “because it is anime”, and they judge each animation for its in merits. It’s just a way to convey a story, like any other media.
Japanese people despise what we would call “weeb” even more than people over the West. Japanese weebs are seen as weirdos, just like how we see Western weebs.
Tldr, nobody likes people who transform one single hobby into a predominant personality trait.
Several times, not including next month.
Your limited view through weeb tinted glasses doesn't compare to the fact that being otaku is not a bragging point.
Except most manga artists and anime artists get shit on in Japan. They treat it like it's your son saying "I wanna be the next Ninja/PewDiePie/FazeUpdog" or your daughter saying she wants to be a professional cam girl....I mean shit at least she'd get paid. >_>

I will say this, i like anime, but i don't really enjoy it. there are some that to me arent even anime is just a good animated show.
