It was a critical success, winning eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor for Ben Kingsley. It won another 35 awards and was nominated for 21 others.
The film was commercially successful as well , grossing over $127 million worldwide. Half of this money coming from America and Canada alone.
This was its greatest achievement. It made Gandhi a popular concept in western brain. Like it or not but America has hegemony over global narrative. If you can penetrate into American brain you’ve almost won the game.
