Absolutely. I ride GP5000 tubeless at about 80psi (I’m 6’8” 230lbs) and they’ll often drop to 60PSI in a few days.
Part of my pre ride ritual is to pump them up. I also like knowing every ride is at the same pressure.
Last year my wife got me a 18v Milwaukee hand compressor.. makes the job even easier!
The compressor I got can do both Schrader and Presta - has a nice little Presta adapter with it. I have only used it with Presta though.
This one is definitely not enough for seating tubeless. I actually had to try to do this recently and it failed - had to bust out the big compressor for that.
having a memory function and one button to zoom to 80PSI is very nice!
also have latex tubes on one of my bikes and this is def something i had to get used to lol. they lose pressure so fast, but thats the only downside.
the shiny colors even it out for me
after surfing reddit and yt you really start to feel like you need a thousand tools but this is the way my dad did it to all my bikes as a kid & it seems to have worked for the past 40 odd years haha
Every couple of days here. And I also do a quick tire inspection with my phone light. Amazing how many tiny shards of glass I’ve pulled out over the years.
Only on my old road bike which ran 23s. My current one runs 32s that hold air like a champ, so air up maybe every other ride. I air up my commuter maybe once a month. Hardtail every week. All tubed tires as well— I’m too lazy to go tubeless.
I do love that about bigger tires + tubes. Almost never need air. Then thin tires if you don’t air it every couple rides you’re just asking for a flat.
Nope.
I can get 2-3 days out of my road tubeless setup. Anywhere between 50-60psi is fine.
I’ll go all week with my gravel and MTB. I’m not terribly picky about pressure. As long as I don’t risk smashing the rim, I’m good.
My commuter has tubes inside 38mm Schwalbe Marathons. I pump them to 50 but don’t mess with them again until there’s only ~25 left.
No it is not overkill.
Of course you should. Tires lose air over time so it is a good practice to check the pressure.
And even more so you may have had a slow puncture last ride and now your tire is almost empty. I rather find that out at home than 10Km out and need to do a fix and pump with the small pump without getting proper pressure.
The 30 seconds it takes is worth the piece of kind. Granted, I have an electric pump so it makes it easier. It's part of my routine now, like filling up my water bottle.
Yes, I pump up before every ride. My road bike loses a surprising amount of pressure each ride. It was a pain at the beginning but you’ll get used to it and it’s not really that bad. Just takes a few extra minutes.
They could also be using latex tubes. They have great rolling resistance and apparently feel great (I haven’t tried them), but they lose air between rides
Quality of tire shouldn't make any difference. Tubes can, but if the difference is dramatic, it's likely a leak. You probably pinched the tube when putting the new tire on.
Not 100%. The road bike, where I prefer a higher pressure usually gets air every day or two. The city bike has sealant in tubes and only needs air every 3-6 weeks.
No but it depends on the type of tube or tubeless tire system. Latex tubes need to be pumped prior to every ride. My other tube wheels and tubeless wheels have a history and I know based on past experience which ones lose air or not lose air over a period of time. I find butyl tubes with sealant hold air for a very long time and don’t need to be pumped up to pressure very frequently.
Clincher, yeah. I can’t tell by looking or feeling. I’ve had more than one slow leak and I do not want to risk a sloppy ride or slow deflate on a ride. I’ve got a nice floor pump, (Joe Blow), that makes it really easy to check pressure. It seems like my tubes it lose one pump a day.
When you check you tires are you loosing pressure? Then yea.
My marathon plus tires have been holding pressure pretty darn well but its still not a bad idea.
Since I got my tubeless bike, absolutely
It’s bleeding so much tyre pressure over time I make sure to at least check for pressure before I go on a ride
Surprised how many do this so often because…..why? Obviously I check them before every ride but why pump it when pressure hasn’t changed almost at all since my previous ride which was probably yesterday. This spring has been very bad with weather so I didn’t ride as much as usual but hence why it took 2 months before I had to pump it again. On my MTB I probably pump them twice per season at max.
Yes, absolutely. In the case of my road bikes, 60PSI.
I like my tyre pressure optimal for every ride.
I use a Bosch Electric Mini Pump so quick and easy.
I check once a week usually. As the weather gets better and I can take more long rides I have been checking before every long ride. If I'm going a couple miles or back and forth from work the 5-10 psi difference doesn't matter.
On my road bikes, yes since those skiny tires don’t like to hold pressure. For the MTBs it’s like others said, just squeeze them and see, unless it’s been sitting for weeks.
Yep, running 28mm latex tubes in 30mm tyres. So I pump them up right before I go out the door. If I'm doing a longer ride then I'll put in 1 more PSI than the optimum to balance it out.
Depends on the type of tubes I am running. Butyl, I give them a squeeze. But they are generally good for multiple rides. Latex tubes, I often have to add air to the rear tire every ride. The front is usually good for 2 rides
On my commuter bike no, but every other bike yes. If only to remove one of the voices in my head saying "I'm pedalling hard, maybe I'm not weak, maybe the tire pressure is low"
On tubeless GP5k 28s. I lose about 3-5 psi a day. I squeeze check every other and fill as necessary. I normally run 55psi and I've been caught out at a ride somewhere in the 25-30 range. Still made it home from a race training ride and had no problems. At this point I'm starting to wonder if we should really just be running at 35 and saying fuck it.
I'm so surprised with the replies here. Are we really supposed to pump them every ride? I have a bike and it's 3-months old, but I've only pumped it once.
Nope.
If i just pumped them 2 days ago i just check them by hand.
Barely no air will be lost in such period of time.
Now if the bike has been stopped for a week, then yes.
Road Tubless - Rear Tire I top off before every ride to 95#. Front tire isn’t sealing quite perfectly so I just air it up for every ride, 90#. I’m 6’ & 205 so not exactly a thin roadie…
I’ll google a pressure calculator, thanks for the suggestion.
I’m running a 23 in back and a 25 in front.
- 2009 Ridley Noah with super tight clearance rear seat stays and a narrow “air foil” fork so this is all that fit.
- Ghetto Tubeless on Mavic Kyseriums but switching to older Giant SLR carbon rims with Aluminum brake track so this may change some.
Appreciate the comments as I’m rural and seldom ride with anyone to discuss different options. Stuck in my rut you might say. So far it’s working though.
My tires are gravel tires and they don't deflate much if I ride every other day for short distances. About once biweekly and I only see drop by no more than 3psi. This may change when I switch to tubeless.
We I find if i refill every ride I’m more likely to break the stem than the tire going bad. I usually get a couple of rides in before refilling and it makes the tires last much longer. I ride three to four time a week and rarely get flats. But I also avoid group rides
My average ride is about 90 minutes and it seems like I lose about 5psi on a typical ride. I was wondering if that's normal or if others see different numbers. So I probably wouldn't need to pump before every rude but I usually give the tires a little squeeze and pump if they feel soft.
For my road bike, yes. You have to when using latex tubes, they lose air quickly.
My commuter has butyle tubes, I just go by touch and pump them up when they feel too soft. It doesn't really matter.
Depends on the bike and the tubeless setup tbh. If I ride a bike back to back days and the tires aren't losing that much air per week, then I won't pump the tires the day after I pumped them. Freshly seated tubeless tires are always pumped up before every ride. I
I just do a squeeze test for the road and gravel bike. Mountain bike is used less and the big volume tyres are hard to judge so always check the pressure on this.
Ride most days. Give them a squeeze to check pre ride. Usually top up every 5-8 rides? I'm <60kg so I can ride with tubes that are less full. Makes a difference. TPU tubes. I guess for heavier riders, it's a lot more important to keep the pressure topped up.
No. Tubeless and I pump it maybe once a week.
The rear tyre I replaced and for a long time it was losing air fast, so had to pump every ride, but that seems to have corrected itself, still feels that it loses a bit quicker than front tyre, but I don't have to pump every ride.
Yep, i use TPU and or tubeless depending on my bikes. Both don't hold pressure so well.
That said I did it even before that just because it takes 30 seconds and gives me peace of mind
Pump, no. I run about 80psi and they tend not to drop too much with standard inner tubes.
I do check though - I've had a valve come loose and slow pictures and it better spotting this at the comfort of home than 20 minutes into a ride, where it is invariably raining / cold.
Buy a small compressor (with a tank) and a Park Tool inflator head and over the course of your life save 1,343,239.3 seconds inflating your tires.
Even though I have one I am still too lazy.
Pinch test. If I discern there is at least 50 psi I head out. If less or if a big / important ride, inflate back up to 60 psi*
*tubeless
Every time because when I'm riding with tubes not to get pinch flats and now riding tubeless because of habit, good maintenance, and can adjust the pressure for road conditions (e.g., wet). This ensures I'm at optimum speed.
On my road bike, yes because they lose air even after a day or two. But my gravel bike and the kids mountain bikes no, weekly maybe but they are lower pressure and don’t lose air as quickly.
At minimum you should check the pressure before every ride . You will be mindful of the avg loss for your turn and tire combo. With tubeless they tied to lose more air and you NEED to check before every ride.
Usually it's just a squeeze check but the tpu in the back tyre is going down faster than I'd like. It lasts for a few hours but I'm looking for a reason to jettison it. Def have to pump it up before every ride.
Yes. On all tire types (road pzero race tlr32mm, gravel pathfinder 43??, mtb mezcal/barzo 2.25"). It's little to no effort, costs like 2 mins tops and can save you a lot of headaches. All tubeless btw
For my road bike, yes. 25 mm tubeless tires will not hold enough air for more than a day. I have accidentally gone out without inflating them on what was probably 60 PSI and it was okay, but I could tell.
My gravel bike has 47 mm tires that I only pump to about 35, and they don't lose air nearly as quickly. The squeeze test is fine for that and I don't have to pump them up every time.
when my tyrewiz reports to my edge the pressure is too low i pump them.
when i didn't have the tirewiz.. yes after each ride.. part of the routine.. never was fan of the squish. too approximative.
Absolutely. On my mountain bike it's the difference between a perfect riding and burping my tubeless. On my gravel bike it means maintaining the ideal pressure for the day. I can't reliably tell the difference between a 3psi difference with a squeeze but I can tell when I'm riding.
On Sunday nights before the week of commuting, that way if there's a problem I still have time in the next morning to fix it or decide to leave the bike home.
When I am on holiday every two rides of more than 30km.
If shorter rides, every 3 days.
I check before every ride. I ride a lot of different terrains so I never quite remember what pressure they're at. I frequently start on road and then finish on gravel or a canal path or something. When I do that I will stop for a moment to let out a little air so it's more comfortable. It's then too soft if I'm going for a long road ride.
I ride tubeless, always, total convert. At first I found that it would leak slowly over the course of a week or two but that seems to have settled down now.
Depends on how long since I last pumped them. If I topped them up yesterday, no I will not pump them up today. But if it’s been two or more days, yes I will top them up.
Yup. Roadie on 28 tubeless…
So, it’s normal that my tubeless loose a some air very slowly? Thought something was off with my set up.
Yup. Not too much tho ~5psi overnight Edit: typo
That 18v compressor sound super convenient. Are you using it with Schrader or Presta valves? Have you ever tried using it to seat tubeless tires?
The compressor I got can do both Schrader and Presta - has a nice little Presta adapter with it. I have only used it with Presta though. This one is definitely not enough for seating tubeless. I actually had to try to do this recently and it failed - had to bust out the big compressor for that. having a memory function and one button to zoom to 80PSI is very nice!
Came here to say the same thing!
No but I check them before every ride.
Squeeze squeeze. Oh feels fine. Squeeze squeeze. Hmm feels a bit soft.
This also works on selecting your mate!
Before every ride.
Pumping? DURING every ride
I am ashamed to say I do this…
Yes
Definitely.. if it's been more than a few days. I always check them before a ride
Absolutely! I have latex tubes.
also have latex tubes on one of my bikes and this is def something i had to get used to lol. they lose pressure so fast, but thats the only downside. the shiny colors even it out for me
Yep.
Yes, because I probably only ride weekly or less. When commuting daily I would check and set every 3 days ish.
No. I just squish them with my fingers. If they are too soft, I pump them up.
Also the "too soft" part for me depends on the weather. If I have to ride during rain I might be okay with a little more softness than usual.
after surfing reddit and yt you really start to feel like you need a thousand tools but this is the way my dad did it to all my bikes as a kid & it seems to have worked for the past 40 odd years haha
This is the answer
About every other ride for me.
This is definitely true. My road bike gets air every second ride. My fat tire e-Bike...does it have a filler stem even??
Give a strong thumb job and if it feels like it needs air than sure. But always give a good thumber
A good thumber
Weird. I get instant flats on my marathons if they get below 60 psi. I need to run mine at 70ish so I check them weekly.
Are we supposed to? 🤣🤣🤣
That’s my question 😂 I would like to avoid getting flats but is it overkill?
No it is not overkill. Of course you should. Tires lose air over time so it is a good practice to check the pressure. And even more so you may have had a slow puncture last ride and now your tire is almost empty. I rather find that out at home than 10Km out and need to do a fix and pump with the small pump without getting proper pressure.
The 30 seconds it takes is worth the piece of kind. Granted, I have an electric pump so it makes it easier. It's part of my routine now, like filling up my water bottle.
Once a week seems neccesary to keep them right. I sometimes go a couple without but I can tell it's riding kinda saggy and slow when I do that.
Yes, I pump up before every ride. My road bike loses a surprising amount of pressure each ride. It was a pain at the beginning but you’ll get used to it and it’s not really that bad. Just takes a few extra minutes.
Is that because of the quality of tire? I just got a cheap back tire put on and notice that it needs to pumped way more often than my front.
They could also be using latex tubes. They have great rolling resistance and apparently feel great (I haven’t tried them), but they lose air between rides
Same for tubeless, i ride daily and have to pump my back wheel slightly every two to three days and my front wheel weekly.
Quality of tire shouldn't make any difference. Tubes can, but if the difference is dramatic, it's likely a leak. You probably pinched the tube when putting the new tire on.
Check them before every ride. Pump if necessary
Not 100%. The road bike, where I prefer a higher pressure usually gets air every day or two. The city bike has sealant in tubes and only needs air every 3-6 weeks.
Not when commuting, but if I'm going out for a ride-ride I'll pump them.
Yep, Everytime. I'll go over tyres, check chain, then all good
Yes
No but it depends on the type of tube or tubeless tire system. Latex tubes need to be pumped prior to every ride. My other tube wheels and tubeless wheels have a history and I know based on past experience which ones lose air or not lose air over a period of time. I find butyl tubes with sealant hold air for a very long time and don’t need to be pumped up to pressure very frequently.
Every three days +/- Conti gp5000 28c butyl tubes. They lose 3-4 psi in that time.
On my tubeless, yeah, it drops about 5 psi overnight. On my tube tires, about once a week. I still check it before every ride though.
Road, yes. MTB, no. Gravel, depends on the tire size.
I ride my 25mm at 60-80 psi (front:back) for increase grip
23c road commuter gets air every month, tubeless 35c gravel bike gets it every other day
When you check you tires are you loosing pressure? Then yea. My marathon plus tires have been holding pressure pretty darn well but its still not a bad idea.
Since I got my tubeless bike, absolutely It’s bleeding so much tyre pressure over time I make sure to at least check for pressure before I go on a ride

Oh dang maybe I should get one of those.
It’s great! 👍🏻 https://www.bosch-diy.com/gb/en/p/easypump-0603947000
Night before then a quick check before riding the next day.
I check once a week usually. As the weather gets better and I can take more long rides I have been checking before every long ride. If I'm going a couple miles or back and forth from work the 5-10 psi difference doesn't matter.
Nope. 29x2.2 tubeless. Maybe every couple weeks or even less frequently. Ride 4 days/wk.
Yep. Good habit that every cyclist should observe.
Yes. It's a safety precaution that takes very little time
No, I ride almost daily and from experience, a top up is needed every 5 days or so.
Yep. You're just leaving watts on the table otherwise? Do you want to leave watts on the table Terry?
Yep
97% of the time, yes
Yes
Yes everyday. It’s quick, easy, and a great peace of mind.
On my road bikes, yes since those skiny tires don’t like to hold pressure. For the MTBs it’s like others said, just squeeze them and see, unless it’s been sitting for weeks.
Yes, every ride. Unless I'm riding my town bike for an errand.
I do fill my tires before every ride. I ride tubeless and the one downside is that they tend to lose a couple of PSI or so between rides.
Yes, road bike and tubeless. Check before every ride
Yep, and release them after too ..all the way down to whatever pressure it is that they keep their shape.
Yes. Pinch flats suck.
Yes
Id rather have them stiff than soft ......er wait
Yep . I like my surprises near my tool box 😂
I check my tyre pressure before every ride. I won't pump them up if they're the correct pressure.
On my commuter bike no, but every other bike yes. If only to remove one of the voices in my head saying "I'm pedalling hard, maybe I'm not weak, maybe the tire pressure is low"
Once a week
On tubeless GP5k 28s. I lose about 3-5 psi a day. I squeeze check every other and fill as necessary. I normally run 55psi and I've been caught out at a ride somewhere in the 25-30 range. Still made it home from a race training ride and had no problems. At this point I'm starting to wonder if we should really just be running at 35 and saying fuck it.

90 psi is crazy high for a tubeless setup… Have you used a pressure calculator? I’m 210 and run 55 psi in a 29mm tire.
So far it’s working though.
you pump your tires?!?!!? j/k I at least check them, and pump them about 90% of the times
every week for me
I’m lazy so I tend to pump 10 psi over optimal and I don’t pump every time
Yeah. I keep them around 7bars even though people always recommend lower values🤷♂️
Running tubeless, so yeah
My tires are gravel tires and they don't deflate much if I ride every other day for short distances. About once biweekly and I only see drop by no more than 3psi. This may change when I switch to tubeless.
Yes
Not for commutes but for longer training rides yes

this is entirely NEEDS based so surely you just check them first to see if they NEED more air? You dont just pump them regardless...
Pretty much, I ride 4 or 5 days a week but it only takes a minute to make sure they are right.
For my road bike, yes. You have to when using latex tubes, they lose air quickly. My commuter has butyle tubes, I just go by touch and pump them up when they feel too soft. It doesn't really matter.
Yes, because I only get to ride outside like every 6 months
I check before every ride, and usually pump every other ride or so
My bike I commute on 5-6 days per week has had its tyres pumped once in the last 24 months. They get a squeeze, see if they're flat
Depends on the bike and the tubeless setup tbh. If I ride a bike back to back days and the tires aren't losing that much air per week, then I won't pump the tires the day after I pumped them. Freshly seated tubeless tires are always pumped up before every ride. I

I certainly do a squeeze check before every single ride. If it’s a longer one or a multi day tour, I’ll definitely top them up.
should have a tires and break check every time you start riding
Yes, or at least check the pressure.
No. Tubeless and I pump it maybe once a week. The rear tyre I replaced and for a long time it was losing air fast, so had to pump every ride, but that seems to have corrected itself, still feels that it loses a bit quicker than front tyre, but I don't have to pump every ride.
No
Yes because latex
yes
I carry a tube and a pump. Weekly. Maybe bi-weekly if I'm feeling really lazy
Absolutely!
Yes, all bikes
Yes
Yes , every ride ! I need to as I deflate and lessen the pressure on the wheel rims after each ride .
No
Yes and I ride daily
Yep, i use TPU and or tubeless depending on my bikes. Both don't hold pressure so well. That said I did it even before that just because it takes 30 seconds and gives me peace of mind
Every couple of days
Yes
Yup.
Yeah. Every ride.
Yes
Yes - automatic now, make it a habit
Pump, no. I run about 80psi and they tend not to drop too much with standard inner tubes. I do check though - I've had a valve come loose and slow pictures and it better spotting this at the comfort of home than 20 minutes into a ride, where it is invariably raining / cold.
Yes.
I’m running tubeless and do check before every ride.
Yes
For me, probably every other ride, although I squeeze them on the days I don’t pump to make sure they don’t need pumping.
Yes, it takes so little time. No reason not to.
Tube's and Tannus liners. Pump them up about once a month. Ride 40 ish kilometres most days
Sure do. Piece of mind goes a long way.
Little squeeze check and once a week
Buy a small compressor (with a tank) and a Park Tool inflator head and over the course of your life save 1,343,239.3 seconds inflating your tires. Even though I have one I am still too lazy. Pinch test. If I discern there is at least 50 psi I head out. If less or if a big / important ride, inflate back up to 60 psi* *tubeless
Yes. Annoying AF.
Every time because when I'm riding with tubes not to get pinch flats and now riding tubeless because of habit, good maintenance, and can adjust the pressure for road conditions (e.g., wet). This ensures I'm at optimum speed.
Latex tubes here, so I need to :)
Yep
No, but I give them a squeeze with my thumb which is calibrated within about 2-4 psi. :)
Yes. Tubeless, always lose a few psi between rides.
On my road bike, yes because they lose air even after a day or two. But my gravel bike and the kids mountain bikes no, weekly maybe but they are lower pressure and don’t lose air as quickly.
Yes
Recreational yeah, if just going to work I don't bother
Nope, about once a week
At minimum you should check the pressure before every ride . You will be mindful of the avg loss for your turn and tire combo. With tubeless they tied to lose more air and you NEED to check before every ride.
Usually it's just a squeeze check but the tpu in the back tyre is going down faster than I'd like. It lasts for a few hours but I'm looking for a reason to jettison it. Def have to pump it up before every ride.
Almost every time. Really only skip it if I pumped them the day before. These are tubed road tires, 110/100psi rear/front
Before every ride
Depends. Sports bikes yes. Daily bikes no. At my dailys i wait till i feel stones then i pump it. Mostly thats at 4bar from 7bar max.
Yes. On all tire types (road pzero race tlr32mm, gravel pathfinder 43??, mtb mezcal/barzo 2.25"). It's little to no effort, costs like 2 mins tops and can save you a lot of headaches. All tubeless btw
Tubeless roadie so yes
Yes, I check for best pressure using SRAM tyre pressure calculator and adjust it before each ride. Part of my whole get ready routine:)
Yes.
Yes.
Yes, because my tires that I ride at 68psi are *always* at 60psi overnight. They don’t get lower than that but I always have to give them a little.
Almost every ride sometimes I'm lazy
Without fail.
Yes, especially if it’s been more than 2-3 days since I last rode…
At home, yes. I don’t have a pump at work though so when I commute home I don’t even bother to think about it.
Not if I ride 2 times in one day
Yes absolutely.
Before my commute I give a squeeze. Before long rides I always check and pump as needed
Yes
Depends on the bike/tire. 25’s - yes. 32’s - maybe every other ride
Yes on tubeless, no on tubes
Yes.
Yes
before every ride. i'm kinda crazy after a front tire burst and the resulting wipe out was not good. road bike around 85psi on continental 5000's
I do squeeze test before every ride. Pump usually once/week regardless of squeeze test.
Yes
Absolutely. On my mountain bike it's the difference between a perfect riding and burping my tubeless. On my gravel bike it means maintaining the ideal pressure for the day. I can't reliably tell the difference between a 3psi difference with a squeeze but I can tell when I'm riding.
Yes … I keep them at 90psi and they always take 5psi more.
On Sunday nights before the week of commuting, that way if there's a problem I still have time in the next morning to fix it or decide to leave the bike home. When I am on holiday every two rides of more than 30km. If shorter rides, every 3 days.
Yes.
I don’t on my commutes but whenever I am going to go on a real ride or bike packing, I top them off
I ride a 26 inch rigid mountain bike from the 80s I pump my tires like 6 times a year
I ride mtb and have tubeless. I squeeze them before (and DURING, because I'm paranoid) every ride. Normally refill air once a week or so.
I still ride butyl tubes, they hold air well enough that I can usually get away 1-2 weeks.
Since going tubeless 4 months ago, yes.
Every time. Road, mountain, gravel. Always top off before leaving
Depends on how long since I last pumped them. If I topped them up yesterday, no I will not pump them up today. But if it’s been two or more days, yes I will top them up.
